The overall philosophy of the place was akin to 70's free love, communal education. We addressed our teachers by their first names. My English class was held in a room with few tables and no desks. There were sofas and floor cushions everywhere. Most of the teachers were awesome. There were a few boneheads (you know who you are). Martha Ellison and Doug Proctor were a finely tuned educational machine. They churned out many creative, balanced, independent thinkers. Once they were no longer involved with the Brown School, everything seemed to slide downhill. The new regime swung in the direction of traditional education with standardized testing driving the process. It seriously sucked. I was fortunate enough to graduate the year that this regime took power. I was also fortunate enough to reap the benefits of the patient, devoted teachers at the Brown School. Special thanks go to Lois, Karen, and Gaye. They know know why. The dream team of Martha and Doug get five stars. Today, the Brown School hardly pays homage to her roots. So, we'll settle at three stars and call it even.

It's well taken care of so I think it's awesome that an older building with deep roots in the community has been maintained. This is one of two co-educational Catholic high schools in the Commonwealth. The students and staff are generally helpful and friendly when you attend things here and everyone seems to know each other. It's like being at Cheers, but for families. It's NOT in humanity's best interest that I have children but if I were to be given the responsibility of the care and feeding of an adolescent I'd send them to school here so they had someone decent taking care of them in life.

As a former student here, I have a unique perspective that outsiders may not be aware of. While the…read moreschool claims to promote "individual excellence," in reality, I was punished and relegated to the back of the room whenever I hiccuped or tapped my feet. I recall being loud and talkative in the past, but now I barely speak due to the way the teachers and several students treated me. The effects of that bullying still linger to this day. The bullies were once my friends, but they turned on me, and the teachers failed to intervene or hold them accountable. The group was led by one student whose parent worked at the school, creating a toxic environment where the teacher selectively disciplined the class. I was sent to the principal's office or the back of the room multiple times a day for things other students were doing without consequence. Notably, the teacher acted differently whenever another adult was in the classroom, showing she was aware her behavior was inappropriate. I attended this school for two years when I was 10 and 11; I am now about to turn 15, and hopefully, that puts into perspective how long this has affected me. This school silenced me. I was bullied almost every single day, and even after I left, some students continued the harassment. Another review mentions that the founder/principal knows everyone by name, but knowing a name is not the same as knowing a student's heart or ensuring their safety. Leadership failed to act when I was drowning in a toxic environment. I could say a lot more, but I've already given this school enough of my time and my silence. I am sharing this because I don't want anyone else to feel this way. Do not waste your money on this school; protect your child's mental health. The tuition does not provide safety in this 'Christian' environment."

I graduated from Mercy Academy. It actually wasn't my first choice of high school (long story--I…read moreonly attended Mercy for my junior and senior years.), but I am happy it ended up being my last. Mercy has continued to grow and change for the positive since I graduated. Opened by the Sisters of Mercy, they have a rich, faith-based tradition of education young women. (It's a all girls Catholic school.) The faculty is very devoted. The school moved to it's current location in 2007, and it is truly state of the art. That kind of tradition mixed with amazing facilities, plus fantastic people (faculty, staff, students, alumnae), really make Mercy the very special place it is. As an alumna now, I am so proud of my alma mater and am happy to continue to support it. Mercy Academy even was just recently nationally certified as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) school--the first in Kentucky and the first all-girl school in the nation!! In my previous job, I had the opportunity to regularly work with Mercy girls and staff, and I was constantly impressed. If you're researching high schools in Louisville, I can't say enough great things about Mercy! Go Jags!

My time…read morethere is largely filled with good memories, and I'm still friends with several of my fellow Mercy girls 8 years later. My only note is, my good friend and I both have varying levels of learning disabilities, and we both had bad experiences with some staff as a result. Certain teachers did not treat us with much kindness or patience. Granted, this was years ago, and the main teacher we had problems with doesn't appear to be employed by Mercy anymore, so it may no longer be the case. If your child has a learning deficiency, please be sure she is treated with respect by her teachers! Edit: I talked to another friend of mine who went to Mercy (a couple years behind me), and she echoed our feelings of bad experiences due to special circumstances. She doesn't have a learning disability, but she struggled with serious health problems her entire senior year. She missed a lot of school due to being in the hospital and said the assistant principal treated her unfairly, as if she was making up her health issues, and almost didn't allow her to make up the work she missed. It was terribly stressful for her. So, again, just make sure if your daughter needs extra accommodations, that she is treated fairly and compassionately.

I declare my years here as some of my favorite and walked away with strong friendships, sorority sisters, leadership skills as a student government officer and my BS in Business Administration/Marketing. This is also where I met my husband. As a more current review I get to experience it a bit with my son. He easily applied on the Common App and qualified for the Honors program. He was also recognized with a Trustees scholarship to cover his tuition based on his GPA, ACT and admission to Governors Scholars. Tours at UL vary based on the event and especially the specific major/school. We had better information and energy during the large events such as campus preview day. The ballroom is full of student organizations and college services. My son and I benefited immensely from taking a few minutes to speak to professors and department chairs. At a couple of events my son was also able to meet with advisors to discuss class schedules. The business school tour was lackluster and after visiting the blue school down 64, that was embarrassing as an alum. Tours should not be held on Friday when classes aren't in session. The building is too quiet and students can't picture themselves there. I'd also elevate the presentation and have a department chair on hand that can answer questions with a fuller understanding of the benefits of getting their degree at UL. Dorms vary here from newer to older as well as layouts. Apply early to get your space in line! And, think seriously about applying for a LLC. Eating plans must be purchased when living on campus. Parking permits are also required if you keep a car. If you live in Louisville or have other scenarios you may apply for a housing exemption as a freshman. There are so many service at UL. Students need only search for them and advocate when needed - be it the financial aid office, medical and mental health appointments, book programs, disability resource center, spiritual services and more. Gym membership is included and of course UL is known for their love of sports. Greek life? Yes! Student government and Student Activities Board? That too! LGBTQ+ groups and events? Of course. First generation services and study abroad? Definitely. Plus more, so much more. I'm sure several of these things existed when I was there but I didn't take advantage of it all. Walking around campus always sparks my love for UL. It brought a lot of opportunities into my path and I know the same is there for all of its students.
