As usual, locked into a deal to check this place out. Very conveniently located to my residence…read more Owner Christine Bannon-Rodrigues is quite unassuming considering she is, I found out, 8th degree black belt and holds 9 World Championships (ahem). I really had fun going to the Kickboxing fitness classes here. Each participant typically gets a bag to him/herself. The routines are authentic -- a combination of sparring and bag kicks and punches. Music was cool, too. We all worked out on mats so I really felt the shin and top of foot kicks. The staff is polite and the crowd is made up of parents with kids taking up Karate, if not Karate and Kickboxing enthusiasts. It was especially great support training for the choreographed kickboxing classes I teach myself. I really wanted to stay on as a regular member but the rates were prohibitive. Around $80 a month for unlimited attendance to kickboxing classes, on auto debit. Other than attending classes, if they synced with my own schedule (which mostly did not), there is no other option for me to make use of that fee. I asked for a special arrangement that would somehow make sense -- drop in, perhaps? Cost is just a bit high. If you come in as a family, perhaps, or wish to stick to only one fitness routine and this being it, this is a very good place. Then the rate might make sense to you. Check it out.

As a female, at first I was super intimidated walking into a class full of guys grunting and shouting, but was relived to see more and more girls after each class. Coming to Muay Thai became something I looked forward to each week and felt accomplished when I improved on form or technique. Each class is different so it always feels fresh while building upon things already learned. Jaimeson and Num are awesome and take the time to break things down and give you 1-on-1 instruction within the group class setting. More importantly, they make it fun while still challenging and teaching. The progression and testing system helps you be motivated to hit progress goals, but chill enough for those looking to do it with no pressure as a hobby/exercise. Jaimeson is also really great at checking in with you when you fall off your practice - which is nice to have to stay accountable. I will miss Burke's and wish I had been able to train here for longer before moving!

My sons and I transferred to this location, which is now the sole and "flagship" school for World Martial Arts, in September of 2015. We had been thrilled with our experience at the former West Warwick location, but had also had exposure to this school over time through combined events. Our transition was made easy by the instructors, as well as the great group of Black Belts who are generous with their own time and insights to help lower belts learn, advance, and succeed. Leading the school, Master Adam & Master Babits are energetic, enthusiastic, skilled, and probably most important, quality teachers. They're great at balancing instruction, fitness, discipline, and fun. While we do have fun, make no mistake - training/learning here means business. Perseverance is the key - and the lesson, which I appreciate. Every session is about effort, technique, and giving your best - always taking the next step to better yourself. Instruction & curriculum: Do you want to come to a structured class? The schedule is mostly of the post-workday sort, and varies across weekday evenings to give people a chance to select the right time for them, depending on what skill/belt level you're operating at. Saturday mornings are a chance for everyone to get a weekend work session in. The instruction rotates: "A" day is for learning, practicing, and perfecting your combinations and forms, while "B" day is for sparring and extra physical fitness concentration. These alternate throughout the month, usually punctuated twice by board-breaking days, held to work on the techniques to make controlled, high-impact contact. All of the classes have their own dynamic and help you add something new to your repertoire, even when practicing a standard element of your martial artistry. The emphasis is on making the basics second nature (cognitive, then emotional, then physical learning), so that you can add on more creative moves to expand your arsenal. Want to add more variety? WMA offers its "B.O.S.S." program to students in which, above and beyond normal instruction, students learn leadership skills and can introduce weapons training as an added skill to hone. These frequently take place mid-day on Saturday and can augment the usual class sessions. Looking for even more customization? Students are encouraged to set up time with instructors for individualized sessions, where you can get one-on-one coaching, ask questions, practice something more difficult for you, try new techniques, and fill in your tool kit. Here, you can unlock more defined ways to use your own unique qualities to your advantage. Beyond the mat, when it comes to creating a community, WMA excels. In class, I'm cheering on my fellow students as we all learn, train, sweat, and evolve together. Tournaments give an opportunity to demonstrate the skills honed during the hours we've put in. During Black Belt graduations, we have a chance to observe how high our fellow students can take the craft, and how admirably they've pushed themselves to achieve. Beyond that, special occasions like WMA's summer cook-outs and winter holiday celebrations are yet another way the collective group enjoys coming together. Even once-monthly Parents Night Out events give kids an opportunity to be with the same group of friends, but goof off with some fun activities to get the energy out (and as a parent, I can appreciate that). Various give-back-to-the-community collections take place to help out the less fortunate, too. Bottom line is that if you want a martial arts program with amenable schedule, quality structure, all-family-friendly atmosphere, and capable instructors, you can look pretty far without equaling World Martial Arts. I look forward to every session, and my kids do too. Highly recommended.

They work very hard to teach the kids respect, discipline and technique while helping build their self esteem. Previously both of my children had taken karate classes at the YMCA and while they enjoyed it, didn't learn very much. The children's classes are taught Sensei Candace, Coach Robin and Coach Victor, Candace's son Sensei Jacob, as well as a few others but I don't remember all the names. Classes are Co-Ed and ages range from 3-13. Typically younger, smaller children are paired up for grappling. Kids classes are held Monday's and Wednesday's 5:00-6:00 and Saturdays 10:00-11:00 am. My younger and older son participates in this class but my older one participates in the adult class as well. The adult classes are held Mon and Wed 6:15-8:15, Thurs 6:00-8:00, Friday 7:00-9:00pm and Saturday 11:30-1:00pm. Women's only self defense classes, anti-bullying classes, and stress management seminars are offered as well. Coach Robin is a licensed massage therapist and offers shiatsu massage, deep tissue, Thai, reflexology and Swedish massage. Sensei Candace is also a Reiki Master and does sessions by appointment only. She has really great positive energy. They also offer children's birthday parties. Prices are very reasonable and you can attend as many classes as you would like. My oldest sometimes goes as much as 5 times a week. He has grown very much in only a year here and is currently preparing to compete in the Naga Tournament in May.

Sensei Candace is one of the kindest people I've ever met. The patience she demonstrates with these kids is amazing. Her calm energy seems to keep them focused and on track. They work on strength training, grappling and moves. At first I wasn't sure he was ready for the adult class but Sensei Candace reassured me that he would do great. He has a background in wrestling and is able to use his grappling skills acquired from that. He's learned a lot from the adults and has a lot of respect for them. He struggles with ADHD and this has really helped him with self control and focus. Her prices are extremely reasonable considering how many people she has on staff and how frequently you can attend classes. It's a great jiu jitsu school for adults and children.
