I arrived from Superior, WI and Professor Burrill welcomed me and made me feel like I was one of his student. This would by my gym if I lived here. I'm looking forward to coming back. I rolled Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Each time was the exact same...amazing!

Things have changed rapidly over the last 100 years in our culture yet very few martial arts have grown with the times. Machado Jiu-Jitsu, created by the famous Machado Brothers, offers a very modern twist on self-defense. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu's fundamental fight strategy is to take the attacker to the ground, establish control, and end the conflict on the ground. A startling number of fights will end on the ground. How do I know this? Striking with the hands or feet requires that the distance between opponents is carefully managed so that both can strike on target. The moment one fighter decides to take a step back, or forward, it becomes very difficult for the other person to land quality blows without the proper spacing. Too much distance and strikes can't reach the target. Too little distance between fighters and y

They work very hard to teach the kids respect, discipline and technique while helping build their self esteem. Previously both of my children had taken karate classes at the YMCA and while they enjoyed it, didn't learn very much. The children's classes are taught Sensei Candace, Coach Robin and Coach Victor, Candace's son Sensei Jacob, as well as a few others but I don't remember all the names. Classes are Co-Ed and ages range from 3-13. Typically younger, smaller children are paired up for grappling. Kids classes are held Monday's and Wednesday's 5:00-6:00 and Saturdays 10:00-11:00 am. My younger and older son participates in this class but my older one participates in the adult class as well. The adult classes are held Mon and Wed 6:15-8:15, Thurs 6:00-8:00, Friday 7:00-9:00pm and Saturday 11:30-1:00pm. Women's only self defense classes, anti-bullying classes, and stress management seminars are offered as well. Coach Robin is a licensed massage therapist and offers shiatsu massage, deep tissue, Thai, reflexology and Swedish massage. Sensei Candace is also a Reiki Master and does sessions by appointment only. She has really great positive energy. They also offer children's birthday parties. Prices are very reasonable and you can attend as many classes as you would like. My oldest sometimes goes as much as 5 times a week. He has grown very much in only a year here and is currently preparing to compete in the Naga Tournament in May.

Sensei Candace is one of the kindest people I've ever met. The patience she demonstrates with these kids is amazing. Her calm energy seems to keep them focused and on track. She has a way that makes them want to make her proud of them. She's everyone's ninja mother, lol. Both my kids take classes here. My oldest takes adult and kid classes. They work on strength training, grappling and moves. At first I wasn't sure he was ready for the adult class but Sensei Candace reassured me that he would do great. He has a background in wrestling and is able to use his grappling skills acquired from that. He's learned a lot from the adults and has a lot of respect for them. He struggles with ADHD and this has really helped him with self control and focus. Her prices are extremely reasonable considering how many people she has on staff and how frequently you can attend classes. It's a great jiu jitsu school for adults and children.

It definitely toughens them up while teaching discipline and respect. The owners are extremely nice people. It is family owned and operated. It is pretty expensive to send both children but luckily our town wrestling is wonderful and paid half for the summer (my older son wrestling for highschool this year, younger wrestles for the town). As much as they love attending it's not really affordable to send both kids year round (they also practice jiu jitsu at another place). It is located in Coventry now so it's a bit of a drive as well. Overall if you can afford it, it's a great place.

The classes are filled and anyone is welcome. You can join with zero experience and will be warmly welcomed. The owners Sensei Serge Boyssou his wife Liz are two incredible people who have changed the lives of so many especially by getting kids off the street and providing them a safe environment to grow. I joined this club at 16 when I was new to judo and only had wrestling experience. There are a ton of female athletes in the club that has never been divided or discriminated. The minute you step in the met gender disappears and you respect your opponent and protect them. Katelyn their daughter runs most of the classes and is an extremely accomplished judoka and wrestler. Many of the students compete and travel frequently. There is a long list of accomplishments that come from this club. Serge always has seminars and camps and in the physical sense you could never get a better workout. There's also a Weight room in the back. Serge goes over and beyond for all of his students and will give you the shirt off his back if you put the time in. This truly is an amazing special place that made me a million times better person, I wouldn't trade the lessons I've learned here physically and mentally for anything. I highly recommend !
