    Mandolay Hotel

I have always stayed at the Mandolay and had a lovely time BUT THIS IS NOT THE HOTEL IT WAS BEFORE…read moreCOVID. I have never written a negative review but this experience is unacceptable. Upon arrival to the hotel, the room we were put in had a broken toilet and were moved to a annex room because it was the only one available. We didn't like being outside of the main hotel and we had paid for a city-view room but now had a window looking into a parking lot. We let it slide and wanted to just enjoy the rest of our stay. Upon getting ready for bed, we noticed how dirty and unmade the room was. The shower curtain was grimy/ stained, the mugs were dirty and we had no spoons to make tea, and then when we pulled back the sheet to get into bed, there was no fitted sheet and the loose sheet had hairs on it along with a stain. It was clear at this point the room had not been cleaned. Upon talking to the front desk in the morning, the staff was just as mortified by the state of the room as we were and were very apologetic (the staff on site was very kind!). I expressed that we did not get the accommodations we were expecting and paid for in our first night stay and I was told the manager, Ian, would contact me. Rather than remedying our experience and adjusting the rate of our stay for the one uncleanly night and parking-lot view we overpaid for, I have spent the following days of my trip arguing with the manager as he wanted to "investigate" the situation days after the fact. His investigation of the "facts," I can only assume involved asking the staff if they cleaned the room... which of course was said to be the case since he was not on the premise the day we brought our concerns to the front desk. He has since tried to defend all points made, seeing no reason to amend the cost of our first night. We have even acknowledged that the room was adequately cleaned the next day and we are not asking for a price adjustment on our second night. Instead, he has put it on us for not calling reception to request these things fixed during our first night (despite the fact is was bedtime and the room needed to entirely be cleaned). He compared it to guest calling the front desk to get more pillows or biscuits. Following my correspondence with him, I would avoid the Mandolay. If the stay does not meet basic standards, do not expect the hotel to deal with it in an appropriate manor. Truthfully, I was embarrassed I recommended to my friend that we stay here. The uncleanliness is not acceptable during COVID and the service following it has been a headache!

The rooms…read morewere dingy and I didn't even stay around long enough for breakfast to find out how that was. Thankfully it has undergone a major renovation since then and is unrecognisable when compared to its former self. The lounge and bar area is a pleasant area to sit and enjoy an afternoon drink and becomes a lively night time venue which is always friendly and pleasantly busy. The rooms have been given a very much needed makeover and are now a relaxing place to stay. A massive improvement and worth considering if you are staying in Guildford.

As my room was on the -1 level which maybe the older part of the hotel it is very creaky, the corridors the rooms above lots of creaking. The rooms could use updating but it was clean if a little cold. Once I had adjusted the radiator it was better when I came back to sleep. If you are on business it functions well but the charge they want to level against accessing wifi is outrageous. I am not sure why hotels think this is acceptable in this day & age we live in. On the whole convenient location if you need to use the Surrey Sports Park which host many events and activities. A very functional hotel if you need somewhere for some business meetings and the meeting rooms are serviced to a good standard.

I digress: A noisy, sprawling, myriad of tiny halls and stairs that frankly needs a major refresh in all the rooms - did I say noisy? For what it is, you'd think it would be somewhat inexpensive, but it is not in the slightest. While the staff was kind and pleasant, they were not efficient. I waited quite a while to get served in the restaurant and a few details had to be worked out at check in. Things like this usually point to a management issue, but hard to say. I will say that it was very busy, and hot and humid, so maybe I am being a bit harsh on the staff. The hotel is not close to any of Guildford's shopping or excellent restaurants and no shuttle service is available (again, poor management decision), so either bus or cab (approx 10 pounds) is required to get to Guildford Centre. Frankly, other than proximity to University, I see no reason to stay here. The toilet did not work sporadically, running and running until I fiddled with it - the room air conditioner worked awesomely well! Caution: if your plans change and you need to leave a day early, it is a 50 POUND CHARGE! Just another reason I will not be staying here again.

Drummond Arms Inn - The Pub!

Didn't know what to expect from an English Inn, my experience previous to this trip being limited to Fawlty Towers. Suffice it to say, Fawlty Towers this is not.--nothing faulty to report at all! The historic inn, of course, has its issues (gutters need some work; no screens on windows--may be an English thing--; lunch food coming out slowly on Saturday owing, I imagine, to a small kitchen and a large crowd; no hair dryer or shampoo (but plenty of soap and bath gel) in room), but I viewed them more as "quirks" than problems. The room was clean and ready on time, the bathroom had been updated within the last 5-10 years, and there is WiFi throughout the Inn. The pub was terrific, exactly what an American beer enthusiast like myself was looking for. The country garden in the back, with umbrellas and tables and a patio and a great little stream running through was a huge bonus. The breakfast included in our rate was outstanding. Full English was available, or any variation thereof. Coffee was well done, and the toast, eggs and bacon were terrific. The biggest attribute of the Drummond was the staff, all of whom were attentive and accommodating, and most especially Jay, who I believe is either the proprietor, manager, or both. Jay is just about the nicest guy you will ever meet. He took care of us for breakfast every morning, he served as beers in the pub, he got us taxis when we needed them, and gave us great directions and ideas for golf and hiking excursions. On our departure he gave us a secure space to hold luggage after check out but before we were departing. I even witnessed him make a trip to his own home to get his own iPhone charger and shoe polish to give to a guest who was in need of same. Lastly, we found the price to be very reasonable, especially given the quality of the breakfast and staff.

There is something very wrong with the air conditioning system at this hotel. The first room I…read morewalked into, I was hit by blazing heat and immediately called the front desk and had to change rooms because the meter was not working (room 411). The room should not even be in service for gas. Secondly, I was moved to room 509 which did not have the stifling heat factor, but the air conditioning still was not satisfactory. As a result, they had to bring me a fan. Needless to say, my sleep was interrupted throughout the nights due to the Warren of the room. The manager was very kind and provided me with one complementary cocktail at the bar for the inconvenience. In addition, when housekeeping came to clean my room, they were removed the wash face cloths and did not replace them. I called down to the front desk to see if someone could bring me a couple up, and the employee told me that I could either come downstairs and get them or that housekeeping would be open again in the morning. I told him that I was undressed and could not come down. He then brought up two hand towels, and when I told him that I needed face cloths, he told me that was all they had. Needless to say, I had to take a shower with a massive hand towel. The next day, upon returning to my room, housekeeping had not left face cloths again. I had to go downstairs and get them. I don't know what the issue is at this hotel with that. Nonetheless, there is a mini refrigerator in the rooms, my new room was 509, but they do not keep items cool at all. Therefore, if you go and get ice from the bar area. (says there are no icemakers on any floors in this hotel), there is no way to keep it frozen. Also, their elevators are extremely small and narrow, and don't work all the time. If you have more than three people or two people with luggage, that is all that will fit in them, and they are very slow and only work some of the times. Furthermore, I requested a late check out and was told that noon was the latest they could do without charging me an additional fee. I would've thought that given everything that went wrong with my stay, they would've accommodated my 1pm check-out request, but they did not. On a positive note, the hotel is in a great location and there is tons to do in the area. My colleague parked car. They are so be aware that there is no in and out privileges. Once you park, your car must remain parked, or you will be charged again. This doesn't make very much sense to me. I believe there are other parking structures in the area that are cheaper and more flexible so you might want to check. Needless to say, when I return to my office in the area, I will definitely plan to stay elsewhere. I need to sleep comfortably, have a cool room, and expect great customer service.
