Promptness and attention to detail. I also contacted another local Farmer's agent and had some difficulty reaching them by phone. I needed to set up insurance around the Thanksgiving break and Edwin got back to me right away and I was able to pay for our auto/home/umbrella policy over the phone. 2. Understands the system. I have a PhD and most people would consider me a smart person, but I do not understand insurance. Edwin very patiently explained all the details of the different limits to me. 3. Problem solver. Due to some confusion in the Farmer's system, I received a refund that I did not ask for. Edwin took care of this error by tracking down the paper trail and patiently explained to me what was going on. With most insurance companies, I probably would have needed to talk to customer service for hours to solve this problem that was not of my own making. 4. Overall good person and neighbor. I was hit by another car recently and Edwin explained my coverage, what to expect, and even offered to pick up groceries for me!

    Capitol Benefits is an "old style" business... you know... good customer service, fast turn-around…read moreon issues, you get to know their people by name, etc. For years I was forking over money to our Nationwide agent, having emails ignored and just a "call the 800" number attitude. I found CB through here (Yelp) about 2 years ago and have been with them since. The hard data: Prior to the switch I was paying about 3500/yr, and with CB's help, this has now dropped to about 2500/yr, with nearly identical policies and much better service. The nitty gritty: when I first contacted them, I connected with Alan Putterman. He began by asking for a copy of our existing policy documents. He then took a few days to review them, and then had a list of options back for me ranging from near-match, to high-end, to economy. My initial reaction was reverse-sticker shock LOL... He assured me that the plans were as good as what I was looking for and I'd be fully covered. Of the 4 separate policies he put together for us, 2 of the 4 have had claims since inception and the claims went off without a hitch. I've needed CB's help a few times over the past two years, and they tackle issues very quickly and amicably. All in all, its nice keeping that extra $100 every month in my pocket thanks to CB... and its cool to have these folks on the ball and in my corner.

Unfortunately, it's like shiny brass on the titanic - utterly useless in the overall picture. Said simply; I had a claim on my roof. Clearly, it was wind damage. There are holes. It's the Monday after Thanksgiving and it is raining. I've been back and forth with them for 2 weeks. They offered to pay for a patch job ($780) when it is obvious that my roof needs much more attention than this. My contractor says that a simple patch job won't be adequate because of the way the particular damage is; it needs to be replaced. I had someone from claims try to explain to me that I didn't "maintain the slate shingles." What, am I supposed to go up and sweep them? It's wind damage. What's more, he tried to get me to admit that I was trying to "get Allstate to cover a roof that you need to replace yourself." I have the money to replace it, but I've been paying these guys $1500+ a year when I could have been paying $1200 with a competitor. My thought was that the higher money would mean they'd do better work. I'm now attempting to save whoever is reading this from making the mistaken assumption I made. These guys won't have your back. So, I've been a consistent client for over a decade and didn't make claims in the past because I didn't want to be someone that was trying to get money for nothing. When I do have a solidly necessary claim, they are dragging their feet, giving unclear answers on if they'll cover any additional damages during this deliberation, and generally made my life suck during an already stressful Thanksgiving where I lost a family member a few days earlier. Lastly, Allstate generally has a reputation of doing this. Every contractor I've spoken with since talking about my situation recoiled when I said I had Allstate. They definitely don't have the lowest prices AND they will leave you high and dry when you need them. Unless you like wasting time, talking to lawyers, and feeling miserable, don't use Allstate. They'll be nice and polite while they rip you off. Don't use Allstate.

The cost is substantial, probably $100,000 and include items like peeling paint as a MAJOR repair need. The sole purpose of the list is to deny renewal. Candice Clough, my Allstate agent for the past 23 years refuses to help or to communicate with me. I strongly recommend that NO ONE do any business with Allstate or Candice Clough
