I noticed another tourist behind me having the same problem too. While it is a nice looking place, I wouldn't recommend it at all.

You can tell by looking around, the place was emptyish while the tapas places nearby and across the street were full. We actually went inside the restaurant across this place, it was touristy and extremely expensive, we thought, this is not the experience we wanted. We left and entered the Sidreria. Here goes nothing... Here is the lowdown: it is CHEAP, LARGE PORTION sizes, DELICIOUS, super FRIENDLY (bar tender did Everything and was really nice to us. It helped that I speak spanish though) and were you get FREE TAPAS with your drink. Tell me when was the last time you got free tapas in a touristy bar? We ordered a Tinto de Verano (red wine, lemon soda and splash of vermouth) and it was great, cost about 2 euros or so! the only beer though, was San Miguel, but it tastes much better from tap than bottle, we repeated our orders shortly after downing the first batch. The free tapa came as a surprise, we had ordered several (including fried calamari already, and a tortilla) portions again, were cheap and huge. We were full then. At the next round of drinks, another free tapa came. I was surprised again and as a sign of respect, we ate it all again. No comments. A plate of peanuts and soft bread topped with a mayo/potato/fake crab meat. It looked so simple but it was so good! That's when they got me. Simple-delicious (like the tomato on bread and Olive oil) that's it. I was sold and happy we decidedly to enter.

The owner/manager (?) working the bar was quite a friendly character and seemed to enjoy the games with the patrons. He chatted with all the tables in turn but not too long to distract from the games playing. The food was decent and the portions on the normal side. My friend and I used the Yelp deal which was a paella and beer for 13€. The paella took about 20 minutes and it was served in a skillet--they gave a good mix of veggies and seafood. My other friend had what essentially was Spanish omelette with potatoes and veggies wrapped inside. Regrettably the beer that came with the deal tasted a bit like Coors Light but at least it was cool and tasted a bit smoother with the paella. The place itself is pretty small--maybe seats 30 people, with basically 2 TV's (one above the bar and another on the opposite wall. There are a few booths on the right side when you walk in and the rest are open tables in the center areas. It was the one place while we were in Madrid where I heard more American English than Spanish, but I suppose that comes with the sports territory.

I suspected we were in for a great meal, and I was not disappointed! We were seated, and our drink orders were produced quickly. The restaurant is big, as there is an outdoor dining area, and an upstairs and downstairs dining room. We were seated downstairs, next to a display case with these little statues of an army of servers brining food. But, I did not find their noise level too bad, as we were capable of having a conversation at a normal volume. Since there were 4 in our party, we ordered a selection of their hot and cold small plates to share - ceasar salad, croquettes filled with stew meat, fried clams, and tortilla patatas. The tortilla patatas took the prize for me. Excellent, and I could have eaten more. Next came our main dishes, which we also shared - grilled hake, grilled lamb, and macaroni bolognese. I ordered oxtail, which came with potatoes. The server recommended this dish. It was tasty, but cold food is not pleasant. I don't normally do this, but I asked the server to heat it up. When he came back, the oxtail was lukewarm and the potatoes were cold. Other menu items were not worth mentioning. They charged us cold hard pan/bread for €1. They do have a great location though. During the dinner, some entertainers were playing music and rapping in Spanish asking patrons for money. The meal was over $60 USD for two people. I won't be coming back.
