Have you ever seen a house painted yellow? Me neither! Despite the fact there are three yellow…read morehouses on my block. I've never seen the outside of a house painted yellow. Apparently, according to the Benjamin Moore dealer at Miller Paint and Decorating, no house has ever been painted yellow on the outside, because it will fade or require multiple coats so they can't even give me samples of any yellow color for an exterior job. Which is really weird, since the Benjamin Moore website seems to say the exact opposite, even has a color picker for my exterior color. And also because I got yellow colors from three other paint stores/suppliers, meant for exterior paint. But no, I'm probably wrong about this because the dude at the counter said he was darn sorry I just can't paint my house yellow with Benjamin Moore colors. Going to go to another Benjamin Moore dealer shortly to find out whether it's a franchised craziness or just individual lunkheadedness associated with this store, but I shan't bother coming back here, at least not until they invent the color yellow again.

Over a year later under new ownership and I am still coming back. Their prices might have seemed…read morehigher than the old Ace prices, but everywhere you look in this world things cost more and their prices are in line with the big box stores. Sometimes even lower. That really doesn't matter though, because the helpful service I receive here more than makes up for a few extra pennies. The staff are super friendly and have helped me with lots of projects along the way. I needed a weird part that wasn't available anywhere else and they found it for me in their storeroom and gifted it to me. I needed a certain type of paint on a holiday-eve and they spent the extra time going through their stash to find a suitable product. When the entire northeast region is out of salt and they have a shipment coming in, they were willing to make arrangements so that some was waiting for me when I showed up that evening. And when I need advice (and honestly, it seems to be always) they are a lot more reliable and useful than trying to randomly search Youtube. It is the smaller hardware stores that provide what most do it yourselfers (read: amateurs) really need: attention. Because of that, I will keep coming back to here.

This is no longer Shaker Hardware! There is apparently new ownership, and the name is changed to…read moreChance's Hardware. I normally would not be in a hurry to write about a hardware store that is not near my house. How often would I likely be to visit it again? But this store caught my attention when I saw an ad for them on TV. They claimed that they have items not found in other stores. They also emphasized that they offer friendly and readily available service. Today, in search of a particular style cabinet knob, after nothing met my wife's satisfaction in Lowe's, Home Depot, and several other stores, we tried Chance's on our way through Latham. The first thing we noticed was a friendly greeting from an employee helping another customer in the parking lot. Walking through the store we saw everything very well organized and nicely displayed in a clean environment. Once we found what we were in search of, we met that same welcoming employee (owner?) from the parking lot on our way to the register. He was truly friendly and made the shopping experience a pleasure. The item we purchased could have been ordered for less from Lowe's, but it was not available today and we've never received such a sincere welcome in any big-box store. There is definitely truth in advertising from Chance's Hardware store.

If you need a few days between purchasing and when your project starts, they can hold it for you!!! One thing they had which I've never seen anywhere else, were these stairs nose caps in various vinyl colors. Seems like I'll be coming back for future projects as well

They are like a well stocked hardware store + LL Bean outdoor clothing store + pet store, all combined into one. They sell screws and bolts BY THE POUND... how did I not know about this? This saves you a ton of money. However, for hardware sized smaller than 1/4-20 you are out of luck. They also sell dog food including some high-end, quality brands (that is what brought us here). They are always having sales on tools and stuff. They have a visiting vet for your animal that comes a couple of hours a week and offers discounted vet services. They sell live animals like chickens in the spring- say what? If you need lumber or windows this isn't the place for you. If you need the stuff you might have found one time at a well stocked "General Store" though, come here!

They also have windows and doors. And that's about it. It's all discounted, most of it new but off-brand but some of it product overruns, the stock is rather unpredictable but what they have typically runs a lot cheaper than the Lowe's and Home Depot and moderately cheaper than Lumber Liquidators and the like. If you're not picky, or if you're building for somebody else's renovation, you can find good bargains here. As for long-term quality, I know not: everything here seems to be fairly elemental. There are a few semi-custom things you can order (windows, notably) but exactly how custom is hard to tell. In any event, there's definitely money to be saved but it does depend on what your tolerance range is for style and selection. Probably worth poking your head in if you're doing your own home renovation, particularly on a rental or an in-law unit. Location is at 7 and Watt St., you have to turn onto Watt from 7 and go by United Buffet, Ocean State, and the panoply of dollar stores through the parking lot to get to Bargain Outlet all the way at the end.
