The parking is easy. The only restroom available is a porta potty and only one from what I saw. There's a track section near the dog park for those who want to exercise as well as a little gazebo type of area for gatherings. The dog park offers little obstacle courses, potty stations with potty bags, and benches for owners to sit on while in the gate. All in all my dog enjoyed her time playing and socializing with other pooches! We shall return.

This parking frees up rather quickly and many people were kind enough to offer up their spot. The Ship Lock Canal runs along the park to cross over to Chapel Island. It was clear that the area is being protected and restored as it is part of the historic William H. Trigg Shipyard Dry dock or Caisson, that originated in the late 1700s and served as the home of destroyers used in the Civil War. The area is rife with wildlife, which is why the city is heavily invested in habitat restoration. So it is a good place for a short hike and and a place for reflection.

As with much of the Richmond riverfront, this area has a sense that the old industry was simply abandoned, and the disused canal lock with its flamboyant gate has a ghostly vibe to it. There's a set of trails on a nearby island, and the railroad runs by the area. Parking was pretty limited; I went a block up. There is a much longer trail system of which this area leads into, and there is plenty to do along the river.

Some of the courts and fields have lighting available and some of the softball fields can be reserved. I enjoyed the walking track today, some of which is natural and some of which is paved. A great walk through some trees and shade. There's apparently 2.1 miles of track, even if I only used a small portion of it. Kids will enjoy the playground which has benches nearby for the adults to use while the kids are playing. There is parking out the wazoo here. Just not allowed overnight. It's definitely out-of-the-way and you wouldn't know it was there unless you're looking for it. However the actual park once you are through the entrance and to the main crux of it is quite big and has a shocking number of sports facilities ranging from fields for football and soccer to tennis courts to a golf course. It is very much intertwined with the nature around it but also clear and organized enough so you feel you aren't just in the woods. There are a scattered number of parking lots that may be good for normal capacity but I feel for big games on the fields/facilities it may get packed quickly.
