I have taken the open water and now the advanced open water with Bill, and will probably take more in the future (rescue diving, I'm looking at you). I had a great time in both classes and feel like I've learned a lot. I feel comfortable enough with my skills and knowledge after these classes to go out and explore the world safely (with a buddy, of course!). From the beginning to the end, I always felt like I was learning and having fun. We started in a pool to get used to the equipment, which I rented from Bill. Moved on to book review And then into the ocean. Most of my ocean classes were at La Jolla shores, which is a beautiful place! Except in the advanced class, we explored a ship wreck more than 100ft deep off of Dana Landing (near sea world). I am excited to take more classes and have already recommended Bill to my friends. The classes aren't free, obviously, but I feel with the amount of 1on1 time and the amount of knowledge bill has given me is more than worth it. I am also now part of the Power Scuba community which has hundreds of like minded people that I can scuba with, in tons of the events Power Scuba hosts. Which gets me excited for my future dives! I've done at least 5 events with PS since joining in April. The last one, a pre-screening of a movie, I brought my 14 year old son. He's a diver also so he loves being around other divers. I've always felt welcome at their events, especially the first one. If it had been sketchy or I had felt otherwise I would have been hesitant to return. Every event I've met new and interesting people as well as bumping into divers from San Diego that I've known for years. The more events that I go to, the more I can learn from other divers and I often get to reconnect with people that I've met at previous events. Bill and Power Scuba are really a blessing for San Diego and when I meet new divers I always encourage them to join if they haven't already. I'll be back for more fun for years and years to come. I've been diving for 15 years, half of it with power scuba. I met Bill a few years ago at a happy hour, and he suggested me to join his small dive club for a trip to Catalina island. I was pretty new in the United States at the time so that was really a fantastic opportunity to dive more for a great price, and to meet some dive buddies. The small group is now 4000+ members strong and is really welcoming all level of divers. The group is really safety oriented, for example a shore dive where a newbie is paired with an experienced diver. So helpful! Joined the group a couple of months ago and have gone to a couple of events. 1) the boat dives are very affordable and the experience is awesome as everyone is there to have fun 2) the events such as the premiers for movies was top notch, literally the first people in the screening before anyone else so you get the best seats 3) there's always a dive buddy to find! I would recommend joining as talking to some people, not everyone scuba dives, some people just snorkel or hang out on the boat if they don't dive. This is a super-cool dive club that yes, actually dives!! I heard about them on Yelp, joined their meetup group, and sat back and watched for a bit to see how much they actually do things....wow, I am impressed! They have a new meetup or two just about every week and are very active! The dives they do are varied as well, not just your same-old dives to the same sites over and over again....all different dive sites on different days of the week, too, to accommodate different schedules. I just recently went on my first dive trip with them on the Lois Ann to the Pt Loma Kelp Beds, and everyone was super nice and friendly. No one was stuck up or pretentious, just a good group of very cool people that want to get out and dive! Their leader Bill is also a great guy, fun to talk to and very warm and welcoming. The low review all tends to be from people who are unsafe, flakes, and/or not nice. You don't want to dive with creepy, unsafe, or flakey folks and the group gets rid of them to keep you safe and happy. At the same time, the group is not at all exclusive or clicky. If you can dive safe and be nice you are welcome. Been on 10+ dives and trips ( 2 international) over 3 years and I really like the people and the group. It's about safe fun diving at your level. I recently decided to get back to diving and, in the process, came across Power Scuba on meetup.com. This group truly rocks! Although I was certified many, many years ago, I am very much a newbie when it comes to SCUBA diving. Power Scuba's web site and FaceBook page were invaluable resources for me to figure out what steps I should take to safely get back into the sport. The membership is very responsive and the group coordinators manage the discussion sections very well. I have since participated in two events with Power Scuba and had great experiences during both. The first was one of the non-profit boat charters to the Coronado Islands and the event organizer was simply awesome. The second was the recent "newbies and vets" event, which consisted of an evening of socializing and a very educational, safety-focused presentation by the founder of the group followed by a morning of diving at the shores.
