Research + Booking: We had a great experience with Chris + Frank at La Jolla Dive. Living in a Covid world has made it difficult to do much. My bf and I live in LA and wanted to do something special for his bday - Chris + Frank really went out of their way to help us make this a reality. Chris helped us set up private lessons so the two of us could do our Open Water Diver certification course. ANOTHER DIVING SESSION Last time I went diving at the cove with La Jolla Diving, the weather was bad and had to cancel the dive and was credited a dive for another time. Chris was able to schedule me in quickly when calling on a short notice and I appreciate that! The meet is was "at the cove at 8am". I arrived at 7:15am and saw many groups of divers getting ready. The strange part, I was sitting for about 30 minutes about 20ft from the people I was suppose to meet at 8am. Miscommunication I suppose. Would be best if there was a courtesy call in the morning. THE DIVE. We kicked out about 300 yards to the second buoy and dropped down. Kept in the shallows of 30-35. Headed north and then turned around at 2000psi and headed back south towards the shore. We surfaced maybe around 150yards from shore and kicked back in. On a better note, I had such an amazing time with the group and with Fred and Catie. Fred was a great instructor, he was accommodating to the entire group and making sure all of us were accounted for throughout the dive. I like instructors that care about the people they dive. We took it on a comfortable pace down below and really enjoyed the sea life. Yesterday I did a few dives with other people and knew I needed to improve learning my new BCD. I took those lessons and applied it on this dive. 46 minutes under water with 1500psi left!!! This is a first for me to not blow out so much air. Fred watched my buoyancy and said I did really great. I'm actually pretty proud of this dive, I had a lot of control and i think it had to do with enjoying the ocean and not trying to catch up with fast divers. La Jolla Divers are great when it comes to pace. Until the next dive!!! read more

It cost us $65 for a weight belt, weights, wetsuit, fins, and booties. That is stupid expensive. The attendant gave my friend his weights before he asked if he wanted a 3mm or 7mm wetsuit. So, of course, he gave him the wrong amount of weight. My friend told him size 10 shoe which should be a large fin, but he gave my friend a small fin. My friend had to take off his booties mid dive and carry them because his feet hurt so much trying to wear small fins. I asked for the exact amount of weight I wanted. I had a weight belt, but just needed weight. I was still charged for weight belt and weights. He fought me on the amount of weight I needed, but I insisted because I know the amount of weight I need. On top of all of these mistakes, this is the most unfriendly person I have ever met in a dive shop. I would warn you not to go here. read more

The owner just posted a response to my review claiming he does not know who I am and that I was never at his shop. Of course he can try to claim that because I never even got to give him my name and he was so rude and off-put by my simple and friendly inquiry to rent that I never got to get to the actual rental process. His dishonest response and lack of interest/effort to correct any possible misunderstandings only confirms my impression that he has ZERO customer service abilities and thus I still stand by my original review/statement. By the way, I know I was actually there because I can describe that I found him working in the alleyway, which is apparently their 'front/main entry'. He was loading gear into a small office and I did ask him about renting gear. I also had called the day prior to try to secure rental gear and he or someone who had answered only gave me a curt "just come in the shop tomorrow". Sigh. read more

We live in Santa Monica, CA. We went to La Jolla to scuba dive with expectations of some cool critters. None of us have been there to dive, so we went to La Jolla Dive for the "dive tours". We are all advanced divers with 30-500 dives between us depending on person. I'm the 30. We booked the two tank La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Canyon dive and the La Jolla Canyon night dive. Peter was a dive guide on the La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Canyon dives and Brandon on the La Jolla Canyon night dive. La Jolla the area did not disappoint. La Jolla Dive, Peter and Brandon and the owner (whose name I can't recall this sec.) were EXCELLENT. I would not go to another shop even if given the choice and free dives. They listen, they give a detailed dive overview, they ask what you want to see and try to find it, they bring spare gear and extras "just in case" and they are passionate about diving. I run a firm. I wish all my staff could dial in and be as good as these guys were with all our customers. I'm sure they can have their off days but the days for us were A+. So, if you want to dive in La Jolla, anywhere, contact La Jolla Dive. Brandon is one of the main night dive guys, Peter was our day dive, there is a Madison but we did not meet her... and a cool owner. Went on a two tank guided dive with my dad this weekend and had a great time! We started the morning in La Jolla cove before heading over to La Jolla Canyon. Jay was a great guide. We were lucky to have just me and my dad that day with him, and he was careful in giving our briefing and checking in on us throughout the dive. The equipment was all top notch, and we felt ready to get out in the water. Conditions this weekend were great for California. We saw tons of sea life, kelp, sea lions, and fish, and had a very enjoyable dive. After the cove, there was a short drive over to La Jolla beach to head to the canyon. This was the only place that could have been improved, it would have been helpful to have a quick print out with a small map for where we were headed next! Our second dive included a long swim out and was much colder, but it was awesome to see sand dollar colonies, a huge lobster, and a completely different ecosystem than the kelp forest of the cove. I would definitely dive with La Jolla dive again if I'm down in the San Diego area!! read more

I set up my dive trip June 6, The date for the dive was July 2nd. 8am on the La Jolla Shores. I get a cancellation from the company at 7am, from Chris the owner while I was at the dive site. Yes they refunded the money I was out for the dive cost although I had numerous other costs, driving a rental vehicle from Phoenix the day before, the hotel cost and travel expenses. Chris mentioned his Dive master had an ear infection. ( sorry to hear that) And he had no backup plan.... The Dive Trip I planed with this company was not a good experience. Thank goodness I talk to other dive companies at La Jolla Shores, I will be rescheduling with one of those. I have been diving since the 80's and have never been treated in this way from a dive company. I guess everybody there knows Chris and they all shook their head and asked why isn't Chris out here to help you. I agreed with them. read more

It was easy to schedule our 2 tank dive in La Jolla Cove with our dive master Kenley. He is amazing, chill, expert with a wealth of knowledge. He gave me , a newly certified open diver so many tips on buoyancy. Everyone can learn from him whether you have 5 dives or 500. He prioritizes a great experience for you, rather than just time. For example, he recommended that we do our two dives in the cove, rather than picking up and heading over to the La Jolla canyon and battle for parking. (La Jolla traffic & parking can be a nightmare in the summer). He knows the dive site very well and he got there early to reserve a prime spot for our gear. Our dive was at 8am but definitely recommend getting there by 7am for decent parking, especially in the summer. We saw sea lions swimming around us, plenty of lobsters & garibaldi, sheephead, kelp bass, eel, 2 horned sharks, rock wrasse and zebra perch. read more

Living in Florida most of my dives have been in warm water and from a boat. I was going to be in La Jolla for a wedding so I thought I'd get some west coast dives in. I set up my dives with Chris & Vanessa a couple weeks before I was to arrive based only on review I've ready. My experience was similar to the other (5 stars); however, a quick breakdown of my experience from start to finishing is summarized below: 1. Signing up for dives - 5 stars. Arranged over the phone and by texts. Spoke with Vanessa the same day I signed up (2 weeks before being in town). Determined dive sites, what I wanted to see and my experience level prior to arriving. 2. Finding the dive shop - 4 stars - The address is a little confusing. 2144 is actually some touristy convenience / liquor store. The dive shop is actually located directly behind 2144 in an alley around the corner. This was mentioned in a few other reviews but for some reason I didn't catch it before trying to find the shop. 3. Dive experience - 5+ stars. Most of the organized dive trips I've been part of are on rigid schedule...dives are determined by a watch and not the amount of air remaining. Vanessa and Chis were much more laid back. Dive lasts as long as you can make your tank last (very nice). Great dive master ratio. First day I was the only diver, second day there was two of us. Vanessa did a great job of taking photos during my dives and emailed them all to me after my dives (at not charge or hint of payment). My recommendation to anyone thinking of diving the area would be to consider diving the cove. If I had more time I would have burned 2 more tanks there. Very cool spot with lots of life (e.g sea lions, tons of fish, lobsters, kelp forest, crabs, seals, sharks, etc), minimal current and moderately cold water. 4. Equipment - 5 stars. While I lugged most of my equip across the country I would have rented having now seen it was decent gear. Again, most dive shops have pretty ragged out equipment but on the second day the other diver in my group used rented equipment and it was all decent stuff. 5. Prices - 5 stars. The prices of the equipment and dives were very reasonable. In fact, I ended up having to bail on my last dive b/c I ran out of time. I was fully prepared to pay for the dive b/c I canceled after doing my first dive and realized I didn't have time for a second before the wedding started and Chris applied by unused dive money towards some equipment I rented. Very class act!!!! Overall, great dive shop. There is no doubt the next time I'm in La Jolla I will use this shop to rent my gear and do a few dives. read more

Me and my friend are beginners and a little nervous, but Peter made us feel excited and comfortable the entire time. We had two extraordinary dives with La Jolla Dive; among my 14-year old daughter's favorites among 40 dives in three oceans. We were in a small group of only 3, and the guide was very personable and clearly passionate about the bay and marine life. The guide helped her into the surf, with the tank, and later when she had a mask issue at depth helped her to clear it. On our first dive in the cove's kelp forest, we saw three giant sea bass cruise by--very rare as there are apparently only ~500 off California. Some shark circled at distance, as well as the colorful garibaldi and many others. It was cool to later see this very habitat represented at Birch Aquarium up the hill at Scripps. The second dive from the main beach by their dive shop had a bit more of a kick out, but well worth it as we descended deeper to the edge of canyon teeming with life. Our highlight was seeing a Two Spot Octopus gracefully moving along the bottom. The guide put his hand nearby, and the curious octopus reached out a tentacle to "taste" his glove before snapping back and going on its way. There was a sharper thermocline on this dive, but the 7mm wetsuit and hood kept us warm enough. The shop was very responsive in getting me a steel tank as requested and swapping out wetsuits for a smaller size on our second dive, using our Go Pro to snap pictures of us, etc. I can't recommend La Jolla Dive highly enough--one of the best dive guides we've ever had and very cool wildlife to see. read more

Owner Chris was very accommodating. This diving should be for AOW. Entries in and out are difficult due to current / surge and you have a good 200 + yard swim out before decent. Temp is chilly which you should expect. 4 Stars I took a point off because of equipment failure. It happens but I had a split mouth piece on primary reg and a stuck inflator hose. Not an experience I'd like to repeat ever again. I pre-paid for my diving certification with La Jolla Dive shop looking at all the good reviews and the fact that Chris responded very promptly to my enquires. I arrived in San Diego and finished my confined water dives and written tests within a day with no issues (usually it is spread out over two days). Next day, I reached the dive spot early morning as instructed. I have been diving 3 times before, so this was not my first diving experience and I do know what's unusual. The diving site is shore entry, where you walk into the water, swim out a little and then dive. Experienced divers do this all the time, but it is not at all common for less experienced divers like me. The equipment is heavy and the waves keep knocking you over while you are half-deep in water trying to put on your fins. I found it incredibly hard and after I fell down a 3rd time and hurt myself, I told Fred (my instructor) I could not continue like this. His constant reassurances that "nothing will happen to you" did not help, but I appreciated that he accepted this was difficult and we decided to move to a different location. At the new location, there were no waves (it was a bay), so the entry was easy. We quickly got into the water and knocked off a few skills and I thought we were good to go. Then we went down in the water, till about a 12 feet depth. The visibility was 4feet. Four. feet. I have spoken to at least a dozen of my diver friends, and not one of them could believe that they wanted to do my training dive in such terrible visibility. At the 12 feet depth I signaled to Fred (though I could barely see him) that I was uncomfortable and needed to get to the surface. He tried to have me continue but I was disoriented and couldn't imagine being at that depth for 20 mins. End result: no dive for me. I tried to be nice knowing that they did try two locations, but I don't think the locations are right for beginners - specially during training. I don't know why they don't do boat dives or at least dives in good visibility water - the whole point of diving is to see beautiful fish. Chris however said it was my fault that I "quit", and there was no refund for me. I didn't even ask for the refund for the day we did try the dive, just the days we didn't even go because during my initial day I realized they don't have the resources to do a dive I felt safe in. Diving is supposed to be a pleasurable experience, and this was not. I paid for 4 dives which were required for my certification, I attempted one twice and Chris was not pleasant about my enquiry to be partially refunded. Interestingly Fred had mentioned to me that Chris cares a lot about good reviews, which perhaps explains why they have so many good reviews, as they really push people who have had a decent experience to write it. My honey and I were stoked about recently renewing our scuba certifications and taking a refresher course in Las Vegas -- where we're based. He is Advanced Open water through PADI and I am open water through YMCA. We both wanted to start logging some dives and opted to take a mini-vacay to the beautiful shores of La Jolla. I have visited the area multiple times and even kayaked the cove a handful of times. It is simply stunning! There are always sea lions lining the cove and I thought it would be an amazing dive adventure. We opted to scheduled our dive with this shop after scooping out a few options in the area. We put in some research and checked all my sources Yelp, TripAdvisor, YouTube, and Instagram (yes, I took that much time...). Yelp reviews and their stellar prices won me over. Booking was simple and we received an emailed receipt after booking our spot for an early Saturday morning dive. Why La Jolla? La Jolla Cove is located in the La Jolla Ecological Preserve. The La Jolla Underwater Park and Ecological Reserve consists of several habitats, including rocky reefs, sandy flats, kelp forest and two underwater canyons La Jolla Dive offered us two dive sites: Kelp Beds and The Wall (they offer others...just ask). We chose to do the shore dive to the kelp beds. Dive Info: We reported to the site at 7am to set off for our dive. The cove was jumping with divers, swimmers, and snorkelers scattered among the park and the beach. Paris, our divemaster, greeted us when he arrived at the cove and loaded us up with gear and tanks. I was super pleased that all the gear was of high quality and pretty new- a very welcomed touch. We suited up walked down the stairs to the cove and swam out to the kelp beds. Paris was super enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. Paris truly made our diving experience special. Well, he and the sealions made it special! He had a great eye for pointing out various sea creatures during our dive and made it an amazing experience. We saw a lot of fish, lobsters, and of couse... sea lions. He never pushed our limits during the dive and truly made sure we were comfortable and happy with our experience. Chris was awesome. I was looking to get back into diving so I searched all over San Diego and found Chris who had the most reasonable deals for both courses and tours. I decided to just get an advanced open water certification and I am very glad I did it. Chris was professional and fun at the same time. I found the perfect dive shop to meet all my needs right there in La Jolla shores where all the best diving takes place. I was impressed because Chirs went above and beyond what the class required teaching me so much more about scuba diving that what the syllabus dictates. He answer all of my questions, personally assisted me on finding a good deal on used gear using craiglist, showed me how to take care of it, hooked me up with a mask when mine failed, etc, etc. He as also very flexible with the schedule. I mean I can't think of anywhere else were they would have allowed me to choose the days and times where I can have class. Chris was just willing to work with me with my demanding schedule. Showed up to rent gear for myself, wife, and daughter. Shop was open and the guy just refused to rent us any gear. Said it was for our own good. Surf was to big to have a safe dive. Only problem was that the surf was only one to two feet. Looks like he just won't rent to anyone who hasn't payed him for a $75 per diver guided dive. I did my first dive in 1989. My wife and daughter along with myself are all advanced divers with Nitrox certifications. By the time we found a good dive shop to rent from it was too late in the day to dive. I am assuming it was the owner of the shop who was so rude and condescending from reading another real bad review. Definitely avoid this shop at all costs. read more
