But I trusted my friendly agent enough to go through the process. I called the mortgage specialist to schedule a sit down appointment, and was told I can scan and email all necessary documents to him and I don't need a face to face meeting if I don't want to. Being a techie and avid user of cloud storage, I was happy to save a trip, and scanned/ uploaded everything in the cloud and emailed the guy a link to download everything. Throughout the whole thing, I was more than aware of the downside of not showing up in person, and the risk of ID theft. At the end of the day, I received my pre-approval and all relevant numbers I needed to know to proceed with my home shopping, all within a course of a week. The staff was all responsive within 1-2 business days, and my questions were answered. You don't need to commit to them at all. If you want a mortgage from a well known, greedy Wall St bank, and not Mortgage Enterprise, you can still do that. If you're a prospective home buyer who needs financing advice or pre-approval, and is lazy like me who don't want to make a trip to an office, want to saving gas, and is tech savvy...then look no further than M.E.

I had just moved back to the east coast from SF and so thought I had a good handle on challenging rental markets, but with the bidding wars and 60+ people showing up at listings, NYC was something else. I felt totally overwhelmed but luckily I got put in contact with Lauren. Through the whole process, Lauren was pragmatic, helped me realize what was important to me for my living space and lifestyle, and positive. She helped me adjust my expectations and feel confident in my budget and criteria. I was also looking out-of-state, which made things even more difficult and added a lot of anxiety. Working with Lauren took a lot of this anxiety out of the equation. I could send her listings to look at (because I could not stop obsessively checking StreetEasy) day or night and she was responsive and helpful. Every time I was in town she set up listings for us to see, and it was also very helpful to have her there with me to discuss and compare to things we had seen previously. Many times too, Lauren noticed things about apartments that I hadn't that would have had a considerable impact on my comfort level living there. I appreciated her constantly thinking about my lifestyle and looking out for things that would impact how I felt living in a space. I truly would not have made it through this process without her! My partner and I were getting desperate (we had, like, less than a week before we'd be homeless,…read moreand the place we were going to rent screwed us) when I saw a great listing on Corcoran's site and went, "ehh, wtf." We got in touch with Akeba, who showed us the place right away. She was great--personable, friendly, not fake, and knowledgeable. And the place was HUGE--I thought the listing was probably BS, just because most are, but it turned out to be even better than the listing made it sound AND it was cheap. (3br for $200 less than the 1br we live in now? yesplz.) We needed to move asap so I provided every last piece of documentation I could almost immediately--I'm used to things happening fast around here. Everything seemed to be lining up perfectly. Then the landlord decided she wasn't okay with my dog anymore. Apparently she had listed the place as pet-friendly so's to, I dunno, stroke her ego or something, and then came up with some goofy reason for refusing anyone with a pet. (She told me my very well-trained Chihuahua mix who is roughly the size of your average housecat was "too big.") (I know this isn't the broker's fault, but it's part of the narrative, or something. I was rejected almost immediately, is the important part.) The broker then tells me, "It's okay, I can help you look for other places." Great! We have like two days to get this figured out so let's go... and the next time I hear from her is about a week and a half later, several days after when I'd told her my lease was up, for one place that's not even close to what we were looking for. The best part? Days after I'd been rejected for the original apartment, and after it became clear that they had no real intention of helping, they still charged my card $65 for a credit report. (Also, as a side note, making your clients write down their credit card number, expiration date, etc. and e-mail it to you is super sketchy and not even really necessary.) I hadn't used them before because I was wary of their lack of offerings in my price range, and now it looks like this is a trend that may continue. Honestly, it makes me sad that it turned out this way, because we had such a great experience at the viewing. Corcoran, I am disappoint.
