What makes Retro in Middletown stand apart from the rest of the gyms in the area? Let me tell you…read morebecause I am so glad I made the switch over from another gym last year. This Retro is run by owners Alan and Stella and they are to be commended for their commitment to running a gym that operates very professionally while maintaining a hometown feel to it. I really appreciate the fact that the owners are onsite making sure the gym runs smoothly. They are very friendly and available to their clients. Their gym is very clean and the locker room smells good. The ladies locker room often has fresh flowers. They have a great selection of equipment. I especially appreciate that they have two excellent rowers and four excercise bikes with arms that provide more of a full body workout. The other gym I went to only had one mediocre rower and two of those bikes which meant oftentimes you had to wait to use them. And that was at a much larger gym. They have an outstanding training team that really care and go above and beyond led by Tom Wiley. Without his encouragement I wouldn't be much healthier today and 40 pounds lighter. They also provide nutritional assistance which I have found immensely helpful in helping me attain my weight goals. Trainer Elyse Kakos has been especially helpful in guiding me thru weight training and providing meal plans and recipes. Her passion to help clients holistically goes above and beyond any experience I have had or heard about being provided at any other gym. I would continue at this gym just for the excellent training provided to me that is invaluable. It's not expensive! Compared to many other gyms I think you get the most for your money at Retro Middletown. I also like that there is a wide age range of people there and people at all different levels of fitness. It's a very welcoming atmosphere I don't feel intimidated and people are polite. Lastly, I like their location with Walgreens right next door and Shop Rite in the same plaza. It's very convenient to work out and then go and get my groceries. For these reasons I think Retro of Middletown stands out and is an excellent choice!

I know I can rely on a treadmill component and a floor/row component and mentally prepare for those tasks. I also like that I can adjust my workout based on how I'm feeling that day (walk vs run ,heavier or lighter weights ). I very much value the professional trainers who guide us through the work outs and answer questions. Front desk staff are great too!

I finally decided to give it a shot, and called about an hour prior to a class, they said they could accommodate me and needed me there 20 min before class to fill out paper work (and I am sure listen to a sales pitch). I said I would do my best, but there was fresh snow on the ground and the class started so soon. I rush there and arrived about 12 min before class, and they rudely announce they need to reschedule me because I was "late". It takes about 5 min to fill out paper work at a doctor's office, so I have no idea what they needed me to do there. Horrendous service. Bad attitude. Invasive marketing. Places like this should close. Working out should be a nice experience, it should relieve stress - rather than add it. I've had better experiences in NYC Orange Theories, but now will NEVER return to the franchise.

I got stuck paying two gym fees at the same time because Atlantic Club lied about giving me a few hours grace. I would not have joined another gym if the rep had been honest in the first place. When I saw the charge on my credit card, I called the gym. According to the membership rep, no one should have told me that the computer system could be changed. There was one person who had authority to change the computer system and that was Kevin McHugh-COO of Genesis Health System. I have emailed Kevin McHugh four times and only once did he get back to me to tell me he would get back to me. The Atlantic Club passes the buck and hopes you forget that you've paid them any money. I have not forgotten. I have tried in good faith to discuss this with them. They have my money; they no longer wish to speak with me. Consider this before you give them your credit card number.

So I stumbled across D1 after realizing that a personal trainer is about $50 per session. I felt…read morethat I just needed someone to tell me what to do and for someone else to organize a workout. While a personal trainer would have done this, I also know a group exercise can do that as well. I saw some of D1's social media posts and watched some videos and I inquired over the phone. The owner of the gym called me back and spent about 10 minutes on the phone  with me. He went over what they offer, what the gym is like and was very thorough and ultimately he invited me to check them out.  I made my mind up and decided to give them a visit. Upon my arrival they said that they were expecting me and already knew my name. I was introduced to the staff and signed some release forms. They asked me if I would like to join them on their 4:00 PM workout, which I did.  D1 is pretty straight forward. A green turf area takes up most of the floor space, but there's also some really great weights and equipment in the back. The place looks and smells clean, the equipment is wiped off after every workout.  The workouts were awesome. The trainers were very professional and motivating as well. They pushed me in a way that made me push myself further than I probably would have myself, in a good way. I even was able to workout with the owner, he is really motivating as well. Classes that I have attended for adults were smaller, 5-7 people. I believe they also offer private lessons as well.  The schedule has workouts for children, teens and adults. Each day focuses on a different group; upper body, lower body or full body.  They did a consultation on my second night. Went over my weight, my body fat percent, and we created goals. They never made me feel awkward in the process and were incredibly professional.  I signed up for 2 classes a week. They also have unlimited membership that give access to unlimited classes.  I would recommend D1 gym to someone who is tired of the same results of some of the other commercial gyms. It is a great gym on it's own. It's also a good gym to supplement your other gym or workout routine. I would also suggest D1 for anyone looking for group workouts. I would definitely give them a try.
