My wife and I were members years ago when they accepted Silver Sneakers for Seniors. Powell decided to put the health of seniors in the area at less value than their greed for cash. Since doing away with Silver Sneakers, we went with one of the other MANY fitness centers in Culpeper that accept Silver Sneakers and value area seniors. Sad that this is a Wellness facility that is more concerned with their profits than wellness of the most vulnerable group of people. Choose wisely in where you put your hard earned money. Don't support businesses that don't support seniors. read more

Abusively high joining registration fee. They charge the cost of over 2 months dues for a made up garbage charge. The facility is nice but the hours are very limited. I initially gave them 2 stars. Today the owner called me and tried to justify his decision to tack on the initial garbage fee up front. I let him spin a tale of half truths and misrepresentations for several minutes. At a certain point I couldn't take it any longer. He said his gym gives away free memberships to those in need. I told him you don't give away free memberships, your members pay for them in their dues. That's reality. If you decide to join this gym and pay the upfront Initiation fee, the gym could go bankrupt the next day and there would be nothing you could do about it. Paying upfront initiation fees that are this high is bad consumer business. read more

Members should be aware that they have a terrible 30-day paid notice cancellation policy. I had a death in the family and have not even been to the gym in at least 6 months and they are still charging me for yet another month. I get that this is a "policy" likely in the fine print, but it is a terrible one. I was considering rejoining in the future when things settle down (I have been a member for years) but I certainly will not be back now. read more

This is exactly what it sounds like, a gym + wellness center rolled into one. I use it primarily as a gym though have partaken in some of the classes. There are also other perks such as an annual fitness evaluation, which gives you normal things like your BMI, body fat percentage but also (fun?) things like your VO2 max, which for a distance runner like me was a treat. There is also personal training, reformer pilates and massages for an extra fee (I believe an hour massage for members is about $65, definitely the cheapest I've found in the area). Definitely not the cheapest gym in the area, but I'd bet money that it's the nicest. read more

Love this place! River walk/swim is pleasant; the pool has different areas, like a small lap area, middle warmer area, and a lovely hot tub. The gym area is standard. There is a good selection of classes, but they are somewhat crowded - get there early! The staff is super friendly. There's a nice place to hang out and have a good cup of coffee. You get a towel (or 2), free shampoo/conditioner/soap. The entire set-up is good for older folk as well as wheelchairs. The only drawback is the locker room is communal. read more

So far, this is the best gym I have been to. They offer much more than your typical gym including massage, fitness testing, classes, and more. For the price of membership it is well worth it. read more

This place is great, by far the best option in the area for getting your sweat on. The staff here are all excellent. Everyone has always made me feel welcome and comfortable. Its nice that they have light food and drinks available for a little post workout fuel. The trainers are really really good here! The only reason I don't throw up five stars is space, they only have one group classroom and its quite small. However word on the street is that there is a expansion in the works. read more

I joined the FitScript program at this gym... 8 weeks of land exercising and 8 weeks of water exercising for $99 each set of 8 weeks. You have to be recommended to do this by your doctor, which mine was more than happy to do as she is a firm believer in physical activity as part of a healthy life style. She faxed the recommendation to Powell and I received a call the very next day to set an appointment for a fitness evaluation, things like BMI, body fat, height, weight... then the very friendly staff showed me how to set and use the various machines to work on building strength and a recumbent pedaling machine for cardio strength. My goal is to continue losing weight and become stronger, all of which is happening! I cannot say enough good things about this gym and all the staff I have been in contact with, from reception to gym professionals! All are friendly and encouraging and I always leave feeling stronger, more energized and in good spirits. This is a great place for all ages and offers many classes as well as the machines. The pool is great too, as is the 'lazy river' for walking and strengthening. FitScript participants have access to the aquatic part of the gym while in the program and can join the gym for a reduced registration fee after they have completed the program. The staff at the Powell is very good - friendly, helpful and always welcoming. The top administrators , not so much. The facilities off all sorts of options, including a great variety of exercise equipment and a pool that consists of exercise/therapy areas and two lap lanes. Currently (summer 2017) the facility is undergoing renovation, which is updating the appearance but unfortunately they haven't felt it important to make adjustments to reduce the impact on the members (for example, they have left the swimmers with little access to locker rooms during the process). read more

I love Powell Wellness Center. I have been a member there for over a year and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I do agree that the cost is a little pricey but you don't mind paying for what you are gettings. Tons of classes, pool, day care and can we say hot tub?!! There is a nice pool. However, if you decide to end your membership, they keep charging you for several months. It must be in the agreement new members sign, but it came as a shock to me. They also have difficulty filling requests such as for a letter on Powell Wellness Center stationery listing services, to be used for HCAP reimbursement. I would think most people would need some documentation for insurance and/or HCAP, but they kept trying to give me a receipt from the cash register at the front desk. read more

Our family loves PWC. Family swim nights are the highlight of our week. The grandkids love the kids corner while mommy and daddy have yoga time. My 11 year old is thrilled she can go out on track and work out with me. And omgosh the smoothies are awesome!! Just all around a great family experience.
