While I appreciate the facility's commitment to safety, I believe this policy may benefit from review in certain circumstances. My five-year-old is slightly under 48 inches tall and is a capable swimmer but he was still given a yellow bracelet because of his height. During our recent visit, a staff member (she seemed to be the one in charge) told us about the arm's length requirement while my son was playing in the shallow toddler pool area, which only reaches ankle depth. I fully support close supervision requirements in deeper water or for infants and young toddlers. However, the current policy creates some practical challenges in the toddler pool area: 1. The shallow depth of the toddler pool presents minimal risk for older children who can swim. 2. Multiple parents attempting to maintain arm's length proximity in a confined space leads to congestion and difficulty navigating around one another. Which can make things even more difficult trying to keep an eye on your child and your child's constant movement when you have a parent in front of you trying to keep an eye on their child. 3. The policy becomes impossible to enforce when children use the toddler play structure and mini slides, where parents cannot physically maintain arm's length distance. Maybe some parents can fit going up the structure, but we certainly cannot fit going down the slide. We would have to go back down the steps of the play structure and then try to get to our child who most certainly is farther away from us because kids do not sit still. I believe a modified policy that considers both the child's swimming ability and the water depth would better serve families while maintaining appropriate safety standards. Perhaps children who demonstrate swimming competency could be permitted greater independence in ankle-deep water, while maintaining stricter supervision requirements in deeper areas.

All competitive lanes were closed for swimming even though they were advertised as open online. :( I have yet to see the diving boards used as they appear to be permanently shut down. Also, please, be very careful when you come and go. Every single time I have been there, someone has slipped and/or fallen on the facility's wet floors in the entryway. No cash is accepted...you will need to pay electronically. Lap swimming (link) is available by reservation only Monday - Thursday (drop-ins are permitted on a space-available basis but be aware that the lane you pay for may be shared with another swimmer). The whole facility is very clean and nice, and it's affiliated with GMU. People from Mason were practicing things like color guard in some of the spaces. The rec center also looks like the run a daycare for parents who work out, so you might want to check it out if you live in PWC. The cost was $10 for adults and $7 for kids. It's the same for those inside and outside of the county. The pool area features: -a big lap pool -a "beach" going in to the leisure pool -splash buckets that topple over! -a "lazy channel"--a very miniature lazy river. It goes pretty slow. Too lazy for us! -a hot tub -a whirlpool section with jets that push you around in a circle! This was my daughter's favorite part! -a very fun looking slide with twists and turns. Must be 48 inches to ride, but it wasn't on today anyway. Not a bad plan B on a cold January day :)

Mr. Love called me directly, and instead of addressing my concerns professionally, he was dismissive and made me feel guilty for speaking up. During that conversation, I explained ongoing issues: limited access to equipment due to overcrowding and frequent classes, the steam room often being closed without any posted cleaning schedule, and staff behavior that can feel rude and unwelcoming. None of these concerns were taken seriously. A week ago, I experienced another incident. As I entered the steam room with three other members, we were abruptly told to leave because it was being cleaned. There was no prior notice or posted schedule, and the staff member handled the situation in a very rude and inconsiderate way, despite the fact that we were already undressed and ready to use the facility. Following this, I spoke with a manager, Beth Douglas, to share my concerns. From the beginning, she labeled me as "agitated" and "difficult," which was both unprofessional and dismissive. I was not even offered a seat during the conversation while both she and the maintenance manager remained seated, which made the interaction feel uncomfortable and disrespectful. Instead of addressing the issue, I was told to consider finding another gym. After informing them that I was recording the conversation (due to being labeled unfairly), my membership was terminated. I also attempted to contact corporate to escalate these concerns but was unsuccessful. After reading other reviews, it appears that similar complaints about management and staff behavior have been raised by others, with little to no action taken. It is disappointing that a gym at this price point fails to provide not only consistent access to amenities but also basic customer respect. A gym should be a welcoming place that supports well-being and stress relief, not one that creates additional frustration. I cannot recommend this location based on my experience.

The front desk lady was very nice and thorough in explaining the options. They're a little more competitive on pricing than Swim Kids. But after this first class I can say I really wasn't wowed by the instructor. She didn't really seem to have the personality or temperament for smaller kids. I barely saw her smile or say an encouraging word. To be fair, the levels at swim kids and kids first don't correspond, therefore my son was signed up for a level 3 which was way beyond his skills and ability. He was younger than both of the other kids there. He's going to move to a different timeslot, one level down. But when I asked who will be teaching the level 2 class, the administrator stated it would be the same teacher. She's probably just a kid herself, but I did like the bubbly personality displayed by the instructors of his previous swim school. It was just the first class. Hopefully it will get better and I'll update the review.

Unfortunately, our experience here over the past two years has been very disappointing. One of the…read morebiggest issues has been the complete lack of consistency--not only with the coaches, but also with what was actually being taught from lesson to lesson or even coach to coach. The quality of instruction varied tremendously depending on the coach. Some coaches would spend much of the lesson standing in the pool and singing the songs, while others actually provided helpful feedback, worked on specific swim skills, and took the time to get to know the children they were teaching. There was also constant turnover. Over the two years we attended, our son was given a new coach multiple times. Often, the new coach didn't seem to know anything about his strengths, what he had already learned, or what he was capable of doing. Instead of taking the time to get acquainted with their group they would sometimes simply move into whatever activity was planned. I understand the timing but it didn't feel authentic but rather check marks. It made it difficult to feel like he was consistently building on what he had learned due to so many changes Cancellations were another major frustration. Lessons were consistently cancelled due to staff call-outs or other issues or staff shortages, which left us accumulating countless makeup passes. We ultimately cancelled our membership and are now trying to use up all of those makeup passes, which honestly feels like we are using them simply because we have them rather than because we are getting much value from the lessons. The one coach we cannot say enough positive things about is Josh. If we could take him with us to our next swim school, we absolutely would. Josh took the time to genuinely get to know our son, understand his abilities, and build on the skills he already had. He looked like he actually wanted to be there, was engaged throughout the lesson, and genuinely seemed to care about the children he was teaching. He showed us what the experience could have been and so much more. It's sad because we really wanted this program to work. Even with a discount, the cost feels extremely high for the limited skill progression, frequent coaching changes, inconsistent instruction, and constant cancellations we experienced. After giving it two years, we ultimately decided it was time to move on. We are very unhappy with the overall experience and hope our next swim school provides more consistency and actual skill development.
