They helped us develop our vision for the new kitchen into a concrete set of plans, and they worked with us to keep the project within our budget. As construction progressed, they were communicative and responsive. We really appreciated the weekly meetings they held with us, where they updated us on their progress and consulted with us about any changes we needed to make to our original plan due to unforeseen quirks in our mid-century house. In the end, the work is solid and beautiful, and our new kitchen is a joy to cook and bake in. We really appreciated the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and deep knowledge of the whole G. Christianson team. We felt like we were in good hands the entire time we worked with them. Just as importantly, everyone we interacted with during the project was friendly and professional, from Carl, the owner, to Anna, the designer we worked with, to Ben and the G. Christianson crew, to all of the subcontractors they brought in, and everyone else. We wouldn't hesitate to work with G. They brought it up to the 2024 era. With gutting out the second bedroom, and turning it into a brand new wheelchair accessible addition. Since I use a wheelchair. Everyone from our lead project manager Lukas. To our design team. They were great in listening to our ideas, and following through with them. Even when I had the idea to install a lower clothes bar for my clothes in our closet. As I am getting to the point where I will be needing a wheelchair full time. Lukas made us a second clothes bar, and shelf in the closet. To do just that. He also made us a better access crawl space door. For under our house. Because the one we had. Was cheaply made. And when our refrigerator went out during the remodel. No fault to Henderer. The refrigerator had been there since our house was first remodeled in 2006. Lukas went, and got their shop fridge. So that all of our perishables could stay cold. While we had to wait for the refrigerator to get fixed. Then after the remodel was over. Lukas came back a couple months later with the electrician. Because our vanity light in the bathroom had a bad wire in it. He, and the electrician were able to fix it.

Well, less than a year later and the tub and surround had to be redone. The surround was bubbling…read moreand literally falling off the wall. I reached out to Michael and he offered to replace the surround, with me paying only the difference between the new surround and what I originally paid, and he would not charge me labor. I couldnt understand why the surround was coming off the wall, and Michael said it was because I wanted to do it 'cheap'. The bathroom was not cheap! I reached out to another contractor and inspector who came to take a look and it turns out that Michael had neglected to remove the plastic backing on the surround before gluing it to the wall, so the plastic backing was nicely glued, the surround, however was not. This not only caused the bubbling but it caused the bottom and sides of the surround to bulge out and create areas where the water could get in. When I reached back out to Michael about it, he said that he tried to get Home Depot to replace the surround, but they wouldnt because apparently he used the wrong type of glue for the project. The type he used foamed out after application (hence the bubbling). Because this was neglect on Michaels part, I had the other contractor replace the surround. When he pulled it off he found that the plumbing had been replaced with PVC pipe, not pex. And that the tubing was the type used for refrigerator ice machines NOT for showers and tubs. When I asked Michael about this, he said that he didnt replace the PVC - however in re reading my original review I see that he did indeed replace the plumbing. He said he only replaced the tubing with the same tubing that was originally there. Because he is not a plumber, had he reached out to one, he would have learned that it was incorrect tubing and piping all the way around. A liscensed plumber (who I had replace it correctly) said that we were lucky the PVC hadnt burst. I asked Michael for reimbursement for the cost of Labor for the new contractor as well has reimbursement for half the cost of the original surround. He said he would get a cheque to me, if I send him my mailing address. i did so. A week later I had received no notification either by email or text that he had received my email, so I reached out to him. He said that he is a small business and needs to 'free up come capital' in order to pay me, but that he would let me know when he could. I asked him for a time line as to when he believes this will happen (because I am now out the cost of redoing the bathroom, and Im a retired senior on a limited income). He did not reply. Its been another almost two weeks, and he has 'ghosted' me. I sent him paperwork from the CCB, to file a complaint via certified mail and it has been noted that the letter was forwarded to an address other than the one he has on file with the CCB. Next steps, unfortunately will have to be the court system. Ugh.

My experience with Combat Construction started out promising but ended up quite frustrating…read more Jesse, the owner, seemed very friendly and gave me a really reasonable bid for a new fence and short retaining wall. When they put the fence in, it looked great with the exception of one 8' section that was not even with the rest (it sat 3-4" higher than the adjacent sections with a 3-4" gap below). I asked Jesse why this had been done and ended up asking for it to be fixed, which really seemed to annoy him. There were a couple of other inconsistencies with what Jesse said he was going to do and what he actually ended up doing. For example, he had said that there would be a 9.5" grass board along the bottom of the fence, but he used a 6" one instead. He also told me that they would be applying a clear coat sealant on the fence and instead he put on a "cedar" color stain. When I asked him about the color, he also seemed to get perturbed. The fence ended up looking great, so I didn't mind that he used a stain, I just didn't understand why he specifically told me he was going to use a clear coat and then used a colored stain. I was also lucky that my neighbors, who were sharing the cost, didn't mind the changes. They then tried to install my retaining wall directly on the dirt/mud in my yard with a corrugated pipe sitting on the dirt behind it. When I told Jesse that I thought that the wall needed to be installed on a compacted rock base to be even and avoid settling and that the French drain would need to sit in rock or have a water barrier between it and the wall to function correctly, he became very upset and told me that "this job was becoming a real hassle." He argued that he had bid for a decorative retaining wall only (not what I had asked for) and that he was already losing money on my project. I found this to be really odd since he was the one that had written the bid. There was no way I was going to pay them to install the wall and French drain incorrectly, so after a heated argument, I ended up telling Jesse I would pay for the materials that they had already had delivered to my home and put the retaining wall and drain in myself. There were a couple of other sloppy workmanship issues I noticed once they had finished. They used a sprayer to apply the stain to the fence and ended up spraying onto my house siding. They didn't replace the corner posts at the back of my property, so there are still old, rotten posts holding up the new fence at the corners. They also left quite a mess when hauling away the old fence, including dropping nails in my driveway and my neighbor's. A few of the boards they installed have since warped or split, causing two so far to detach after only a little over a month. Combat Construction offers a warranty on the fence, but I have opted to fix the problems myself rather than deal with Jesse again. It was really disappointing that they were trying to cut corners on my project and that Jesse apparently felt it was unreasonable for me to question him. The crew doing the work for Jesse were really friendly and professional and the fence ended up looking fantastic for the most part. Based on the deviations between what was communicated to me and what was actually done, as well as Jesse's attitude when asked to do the work correctly, I would not hire them again or recommend them to anyone else.

There was a fire at my friend's rental property Sunday morning around 8 AM. Three of the four…read moreunits were ruined by the fire. I called the Corvallis Contractor that Sunday (yesterday) around 12:30 PM and I had a return phone call less than three hours later from Nick. He said, "give me the address and I will be right there. " I said, "the property is not in the Corvallis/Albany area, this property is in Salem! " Nick said, "that's no problem, text me the address and I will send you my ETA. " Less than 50 minutes later he was pulling up to save the day. He boarded up all of the broken windows and secured all of the broken doors and units to make sure nobody was going to mess with them for the night. Two hours later Nick delivered paperwork via DocuSign to the property owner outlining his process to work directly with his team and the insurance company. A few signatures and initials later it was signed, sealed and delivered electronically. Nick sent a text saying he had everything he needed and he would be back the next day to start kicking butt on the project. The very next day, Monday to be exact, there were four beautifully wrapped Corvallis Contractor vehicles with eight or nine employees I'm guessing tackling the job, covering holes on roof from the fire, securing up the rest of the doors and windows, getting security fencing to border the property and using some high-tech cameras on tripods that digitally map the damage of each unit. The final result is like using Google Earth only better. In less than 24 hours Nick got more done than I've seen a lot of contractors do in two weeks on projects like these. I know he's a busy guy because I see his trucks working on properties everywhere I go so the fact that he was able to go from the phone call to the handshake to the paperwork in only a few hours on a Sunday says a lot about his commitment to his business and his customers. I tend to write long reviews but it has been a stressful couple of days sorting out everything from this fire. I don't know what I would have done without Nick and his team yesterday and today. Thanks guys!! Time for some much-needed sleep, it's been an exhausting couple of days.

I would not recommend Nick, the Corvallis Contractor for the following reasons:…read morea) When I received his bill, emergency mitigation service call. I had to call him five days after the initial call to remind him of an appointment. b) Nick stated that the emergency was due to a large water spot. There were several small spots next to the bathtub. He brought in two small fans. The spots were dry in 48 hours. c) Nick stated that there was black mold. When his employees removed the fans, they said there was no evidence of mold. e) He stated that damaged subfloor was removed. It was not damaged and his employees put in half a piece of subfloor. The bathroom is a small bathroom - 4' 8" X 8' 7". f) He stated "installed vinyl". He works with subcontractors. I chose a remnant at the carpet store so it would be less expensive. g) He stated "drywall repair to pre-existing hole in sheetrock. I had new vinyl installed in the bathroom two years ago and new baseboard. When his employees installed the 1/2 piece of subfloor, they damaged the sheetrock. h) Nick stated that they touched up paint on the wall. His employees scratched up the paint on the wall when they installed the 1/2 piece of subfloor. Nick is not honest. He charged me at least 100% or more for inferior work.

McGinnis Restoration and Construction were contracted to repair and restore an upstairs bathroom…read morethat had leaked into the downstairs bathroom causing damage in both. The drywall repair was horrible and did not match the rest of the room. The painters did not do a good job of matching the paint color nor the level of gloss. They came out a second time and did an even worse job of painting, not to mention that they painted halfway up other walls that were not damaged, and even into another room that was not involved. They got paint on the floors, the commodes, and light switches. I took photos and sent them to the project manager and he said he would send them out again, he even came by to look at it. The painters were "sick" the next time they were scheduled to come out, and when I reached out again, I was told they were way behind. They never returned. Additionally, we had another leak from the bathroom upstairs down the wall of the downstairs bathroom. Again, I took photos and sent them to the project manager. The plumber came by and cut a hole in the drywall and could not find a cause for the leak other than the fact that when the new tub was put in place, they did not put down any sort of sealant where the base of the tub should meet the floor. I contacted the project manager again. Our home was left in worse shape than the original leak.

He flippantly told me that he didn't do bids, just construction and was very expensive and hung up on me. What an absolute JERK! I manage 14 rentals in Corvallis and am in the market for a new contractor. His rotten attitude and rude behavior cost him a lot of possible work.

I'm sharing it all below, but here's the short version: the expertise of Bob and his crew at Red Hat Construction made it all come together better than we had could have planned. The first project Red Hat did for us was rebuilding the front porch. This involved pouring a new base, installing larger supports for the roof overhang, and building new railings. The new porch looks much more substantial and really enhances the curb appeal of the house. The second project was a bathroom remodel. Our original plan was to replace a damaged tub and somehow increase available storage space. Bob looked at the space and showed us how we could replace the standard tub with a huge, six foot long soaking tub and simultaneously open up more storage space by simply repositioning the fixtures. The new layout is much better than the old one. Even with the bigger tub, the space is more accessible and seems larger. And to top it all off, this project came in below budget! Our third project was the biggest. One end of the house consisted of a poorly done addition that was built in a converted garage. Outside was a leaky carport that was on its last legs. We wanted Red Hat to extend the concrete carport pad and build an enclosed garage in that space. We also wanted to somehow improve the existing living space at that end of the house as the ceilings were low and there wasn't enough natural light. Bob recommended installing taller and wider roof trusses that ran opposite the existing roof line and covered both the new garage and the existing living space being remodeled. The larger trusses provided several benefits. First, they tied the roof line of the addition into the existing, ranch style, structure in a way that made the garage look like it was always part of the existing house. Second, the trusses provided both a large, standing room attic space over the garage as well as vaulted ceilings in the living space. And finally, they allowed us to place a nice sized laundry room between the garage and living space. The new trusses were never part of our original plan. It was Bob's recommendation and the work of his crew that made it all come together so well. The final project was a kitchen remodel. We wanted to remove a post that was right in the middle of the kitchen space and straighten a wall on one side of the kitchen. This involved placing two large support beams in the old attic space and a lot of new framing. The kitchen was finished with cabinets built by Edel Designs and is a very beautiful space now. After a decade of work, our house is finally complete. It's become a great home for us thanks to Bob and his crew at Red Hat Construction.
