I had originally purchased a duo ticket for the Breakers & Marble House. On the last day of our trip we decided to squeeze in the Topiary Garden as well. The staff was friendly and explained that our Duo tickets were able to be upgraded to trios so we only paid an additional $8 each to enjoy the gardens. I think as a slight up-charge it was really worthwhile! Probably not worth doing as a stand-alone but we did enjoy it as a culmination to the mansion tours. The gardens are incredibly lush and peaceful to stroll around. And adults and children alike will fall in love with the topiaries! I was definitely charmed by them. It took us about 45 minutes to see the entirety of the garden and afterwards we decided to sit on the lawn with some Del's lemonade and enjoy the view of the Narragansett. The lawn is sprawling and offers some seating but if you're going during peak season, you might not snag a chair so perfect opportunity to bring a blanket and pack a picnic if you want to make a full afternoon experience. They do have restrooms onsite. Note that the gardens are located on the Brayton House property and the house is currently closed to the public. Also know before you go that the Brayton house and Topiary Gardens are located about thirty minutes driving distance from the breakers. It isn't clustered closely with the other mansions so you will need to drive over to Portsmouth.

It did not disappoint and they had the most diverse amount of different varieties of daffodils I had ever seen which was amazing. We walked the lovely grounds and were happy the outdoor sculptures were still here. Then we went into the house. They have a wonderful audio tour you get with your phone which we enjoyed. I loved how the majority of the furniture in the house is original. They have plenty of parking a cute gift shop. It was just a great day. I do want to come back to have tea here. So glad I finally visited.

Since it had been ages since last visiting, I only had a faint recollection of the estate having incredibly beautiful gardens. Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum was established by Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle in the 1890s as their summer estate. Mr. Van Wickle made his fortune in the coal mining industry. The estate overlooks beautiful Narragansett Bay. Due to our schedule, our main focus was to just visit the special bamboo bird exhibit and gardens. We went to the admission desk. Luckily, since my friend was a Met member, we got in free. We casually mentioned, we were here to see the special bird exhibit. The staff was very friendly, but didn't make any mention of the bird exhibit. As we walked through the gardens, we saw so many beautiful flowers and lush trees. In one section, there's a large growth of stunning bamboo. As mentioned earlier, the estate had a special exhibit of six bamboo birds ranging from 15 to 30 feet in height. August 11th is the exhibit's last day. All the birds were absolutely striking in appearance. It's incredible, how these birds can be designed from bamboo. Taking one star off for the following: It was quite tiring walking the extensive grounds, due to the heat. In fact, it was difficult to make it close enough to see the sixth bird (Owl). Wish the visitor's section would've offered some type of mini tram to take you through the gardens. Even at an extra cost, it would've been worth it, due to the length of the gardens. However, Blithewold is definite must see when visiting Rhode Island.

The place looks like the most magical garden ever. Little nooks filled with succulent in pretty pots, green houses filled with every color of begonias imaginable, fig trees in pots ready for the taking ( a bit pricy at 75 dollars but undertandable). We wondered in and out of greenhouses and through paths of flowers and greens without bumping into a single person for a good 15 minutes. Finally a tall teenager that i assumed worked there bumped into us, but being a teenager didn't even make eye contact. Finally a lovely woman said hello and asked if we needed help, i say thank you and we were just brownsing and complemented the fig plants and said i was thinking about buying one. She said let me know if i can help and walked towards the front of the gardens. We saw countless signs, signs telling us where to go, what type of flowers there were in the greenhouses and directions to the store and what type of payment they accepted. What i never, ever, ever saw was a sign saying "no photos please". As I crossed over a small lake i saw these beautiful hanging planters from the trees, they were magical and i pulled my photo to snap a foto to show my husband this amazing place i was in, when a woman comes running up the drive way yealling no photos, no photos, dont take photos. At first i didnt' undersdand what she was saying since i have never been asked to not take a photo at a plant nursery. i apologized and she repeated herself in a not so friendly way no photos. After being yelled at i felt so unconfortable that i quikly left. I was whilling to spend my money there, it was such a magical beautiful place that i felt it should be shared, yet the staff is incredibly unfriendly. If you didnt' want us to take pictures of the amazing job you have done perhaps post signs everywhere. Also just a heads up, the internet exhists, we can all google the type of arrangement we see there and create it ourselfs, with or without pictures. So my adivece is: work on your custumer service skills, you are sitting in a land mine of cash yet not taking advantage of it by being awful to people admiring your hard work.
