I was recently the AA "Accompanying Aunt" when my 2 nieces attended a birthday party for another child at Pots & Palettes in Fredericksburg, VA.
First things first, I LOVE downtown Fredericksburg. I mean, LOVE. I wish I could live there.
Second, I have painted pottery at one other place (In Old Town Alexandria) so I have only have 1 paint shop to compare it to.
The party had like 6-8 kids plus a few adults so the space was tight, but it seemed like they regularly do birthday parties because they have it down pat. There is exactly 45 minutes for painting... then all the pieces are collected... then time for food... then presents.. and the party ends promptly at 5:30. Which seems to be exactly how long a bunch of little kiddos can hold their attention for each of these activities.
I can't speak to the price because my nieces' pieces were included in the party cost, which the parents of the birthday girl covered, but their studio fee is $6/hr which seems reasonable. You pay for the pieces separately (and based on listening to the lady speak... these are hand-cast ceramic pieces) so you only pay for the piece +$6 for your paint and time. Which seems like a good deal.
You pick up the piece 5-7 days later and I noticed on the website that they'll ship it for out of town guests (and given that Fred is very touristy.. this seems very smart).
I actually think this little spot was super adorable and will probably be back with friends. I think wine + painting is a really fun idea but I don't know if they let you BYOB. Would be good to check.
Parking is street parking but we were there on a Saturday afternoon and it was very, very easy. read more
