So I'm…read moregoing to assume my experience was totally different because of staff or just over time decline of service. But it completely soured my experience of Portugal. We wanted to try authentic homemade food and everything at first was great. They had olives and cheese placed on the table and then someone handed us some chorizo. They handed my husband the plate and said "chorizo really nice" and he placed it on the table. We looked confused said we didn't order it but he gestured to try it. We said thank you and went to order our food (basic and okay. Maybe 6/10. They didn't have half of the items we initially wanted to try) finished and got up to paid. The olives (which we didn't eat because I'm pregnant and they made me violently nauseous)cheese and chorizo (which I also can't have because it's cured meat) were surprisingly on our check. We mentioned we didn't order it, that it was on our table & they said "well you ate it". We assumed it was a nice gesture,and the attitude we got from that simple statement after asking about it changed their entire mood towards us. Then one of the staff said "they just don't want to pay". We didn't carry enough cash on us to pay the entire bill because of it and they immediately started accusing of being thieves. They told my husband to go get cash while I stayed behind as like collateral? We were traveling in another country and I'm pregnant, with no cell service. That's not happening so when we said no that's not an option they became more hostile and aggressive. So no frills but that is what makes it extraordinary! Tip: watch what others order, point politely and say: "Ishto, obrigada!"
