Apple and cheese salad
Bobby S.

All inclusive resorts ask you to wear collared shirts or a jacket with slacks and closed toe shoes... only to disappointment your sweat-filled efforts to meet their dining standards... when all you really want is to eat in your shorts and slippers. But this restaurant absolutely deserves your respect... so whatever you have to drag out of your carry on to be here... do it!!! When I have the first bite of the appetizer or salad... I basically know what I'm getting myself into. A lot of restaurants are fancy with foams and reductions and blah blah... but from the first bite of the apple and cheese salad... I was undone. The complexity of texture and flavors... the sweetness balanced with the vinaigrette's acidity and creaminess of the cheese... perfection. The calamari is perfectly cooked... and not something you get at Olive Garden but one single beautiful piece of squid. The Arrabiata penne is spicy and subtle in saltiness and balanced with perfectly Al Dante penne. Slight sting of the spice tingles the tongue while the sauce feels weighty. The risotto is the star of the shrimp risotto and perfectly cooked while flavored with subtle creaminess and the goat cheese is not overwhelming but perfectly harmonious. The Ossobuco is so tender that it literally falls off the bone with a prick of your fork... the sauce is rich with the wine risotto. The picatta fish was slightly over cooked but the artichoke melody of red onion and Swiss chard was phenomenal! The basil sorbet and Panna Cotta is the perfect way to finish. I can't begin to explain the subtle sweetness of the tomato basil jam and how it perfectly complements the smooth creaminess of panna cotta! Please please don't eat anything else until you come here... then you'll regret ever going anywhere else... Inside is beautiful and the outside sitting area also has fans to cool you down.

Family vacation down here in Playa Mujeres, visiting the combined Dreams and Secrets resorts. Tonight, our family of five went to dinner at Portofino, the Italian restaurant located on the Secrets (adults only) side of the resort. The menu had a fair selection of appetizers, salads, pastas and mains, as well as a few dessert selections. There's something in there for most palettes, from fish to beef to seafood to a veggie dish or two. We started with several appetizers: the Beef Carpaccio, the salad of Macerated pear in Barrolo Wine with Almond cheese. I'm not sure what it is in the restaurants in this resort, but they seem to have an aversion to using any seasoning salt. The beef used in the carpaccio was high quality and perfectly tender, but the only flavor on the plate was of olive oil. Just a few crystals of Himalayan or kosher salt would have perfected the dish, but instead it turned out bland. This was a 2.5* dish that could easily have been 4* if they'd just sprinkled a touch of salt on it. The Macerated pears were absolutely fantastic, one of the best pear salads ever, and beautifully presented. 5*s on that plate. On to the mains. Daughter and family friend ordered the Osso buco. Cooked perfectly, fork tender, and the sauce was decent. Had a slightly sweet flavor, and we detected a touch of Cinnamon in there. Nice. The saffron risotto, our entire table unanimously agreed, was the finest risotto we have ever eaten anywhere. While there were other failures in this meal, the two types of risotto we had across four plates were not among them. Whoever's in the kitchen at the risotto station knows EXACTLY how to cook a perfect risotto in every respect. 5*s on the Osso buco plate. We ordered another side of the saffron risotto (just couldn't get enough) and all agreed it was identical to the first. So they can repeat it. Top marks for consistency. Wife ordered the Tagliata of Beef (basically a small steak), rare. The menu noted the side as Truffled potatoes. Neither of us detected any truffle and the potatoes were green. Menu fail: these were actually a puree of peas and potatoes. Steak came medium in parts, medium rare in others. Cook fail. Flavor was decent but this 2.5* dish could have been 4*s with a bit more attention to detail. I had the scallops. There were three small (20ct-ish) scallops, on a bed of (again, flawless) Asparagus Risotto, with a lobster sauce. They, again, avoided seasoning so the scallops were totally bland. The cook was fine, not under or over, but there was no sear on the scallops at all. The outside's texture was exactly like the inside, and a little seasoning in the plate would have brightened it up. This is a dish with 4* potential, but just had too many technical errors to give it anything upward of 3*s. Son had the Sorentinos Negros de Salmon (black ravioli-like pockets stuffed with Salmon) in Frangelico sauce. He (who eats everything and is easy to please) absolutely loved it. I thought it was a solid 3* dish, not bad, but not particularly memorable. On to the desserts. Wife and friend each ordered Tiramisu, and son ordered the coffee ice cream. I just took a nibble of each in the interest of culinary science. The Tiramisu was (unconventionally) served in a tiny espresso cup, but presentation was very solid, bordering on excellent. Taste was fabulous, using real ladyfingers (not "cake") soaked in rum. Other than the small three-bite size, it's sure to please. Coffee ice cream was decent, but... Well it's coffee ice cream, not much to say. In all, I'm rating Portofino 4*s but this is one of those reviews where I really wish Yelp would allow half-stars, because it's really a 3.5 here. It's better than "A-OK", but not quite "Yay, I'm a fan". There were hits and misses, but overall, a decent dinner.

Beautiful restaurant located at Secrets Playa Mujeres. During my stay at the resort, I visited many of the restaurants at both Secrets and Dreams, and this was my favorite! Every bite was incredible, and the flavors were balanced and delicious. The portions are on the smaller side, so I would recommend ordering a few extra dishes. (But it's a great opportunity to try more of the dishes, since they're all so good!) The house wines were good, and just like everywhere at the resort, the service was great.

We were in Cancun, MX and stayed at an all inclusive resort called Live Aqua, great resort,…read morerecommended. Came to Hidden Garden for one of our dinner for a special birthday celebration of my friend. The food was great and the ambiance was great. The service from our server was great. It was such a nice special touch for the chef to come out and ask how everything was, and the server brought out a birthday dessert for my friend. 5 stars on all of that. So why 2-stars then? The hostess of this place that evening was rude and out of place. We were all dressed VERY NICE in all black, however, one of the guy in our group's outfit was sleeveless. He was wearing a very nice leather sleeveless vest. Mind you, it wasn't a tank top, it wasn't swim wear, it wasn't athletic wear. It was an expensive leather vest, very fashionable. Nicer than all of the old men wearing shorts and Hawaiian shirts or basic polo shirts. The hostess didn't allow him in until he changed to something that had sleeves. Friend changed and was allowed in. Once inside, he put the vest back on for photos since everyone in our group coordinated to be wearing black fashionably. On our way out of the restaurant, the hostess had the nerve to stop us and say something about it. Lesson here is, do better. We understand that there's dresscode, but know what should be acceptable or not. If it was a tank top, swim wear, or athletic wear, we'd definitely understand. But it was not, it was upscale and fashionable, just without the sleeve. Plus, women are allowed to be sleeveless but not men? What year do you live in? Train your hostess better.

Our first night at Live Aqua we dined at Hidden Garden, after seeing a lot of great reviews from…read more other guests. We were overall really disappointed. The appetizers were pretty good, but our main dishes were really very bad. I got the pad Thai and it was one of the worst pad Thais I have ever had. The ambiance of the restaurant was great, wish the food matched. We did want to go back and give some other dishes a try, but just ran out of time.
