I'm not sure how often reviews are written or read for airport establishments however it's to be known that more than likely this "restaurant " is in business solely because it's one of the only options to eat here at the Des Moines airport. Besides 3 lackadaisical and unkept in appearance employees who have foul mouths on the floor of the restaurant, food servers...cooks...and the manager who have no ability to know the ingredients of all their food (which is a massive need for customers with common yet severe food allergies) not really even care for the well being of their paying customers, or the ability to get all of the food ordered without reminders as we sat there with missing items, this place is a massive disappointment and will never ever be visited by me again. Then to sit for over 25 minutes hoping our finished plates would be taken from us so we can have a clear table to talk at the end of our very mediocre meal, it's obvious that must of been too much to think someone on staff would do while our food server and other employees sat at tables together on their phones and visiting. And to be noted, this was not an understaffed establishment nor a rush hour time where they are spread thin. read more

Great stop and only spot to waiting comfortably at DSM DTW terminal. TVs everywhere to watch sports or news. The food is good and hot. Waiter was very friendly and handled her section efficiently. I had the southwest salad w salmon. Salmon was cooked perfectly. The dressing was creamy with a hint of lime. I didn't care for the crushed up tortilla chips added as a topping. It made the salad a bit salty. My husband had a burger and fries. Fries were a bit eh, but good enough. Hard to describe. Tough would be a good word. I also had the jalapeño mango mule. For $13, I wasn't having more than 1, but it was very tasty. The place was packed with no hostess to seat people. Take your shot and grab a table if you see one. The Des Moines airport is pretty small so I was happy to find the first restaurant in sight past security advertised their craft beer selection! I grabbed a seat at the bar which is large and had plenty of seating. It took a moment before one of the bartenders noticed me and offered a menu. She gave me a draft list and I ordered a flight of 4 beers - all local to Iowa. There were quite a few tasty looking options for food and I opted for the Midwestern Cobb Salad. The food was brought out pretty quickly and the salad was ginormous! The deviled egg on the top was a bit spicy. The ingredients were fresh and they went together well. Although it took a moment to get service, the bartender was very attentive and friendly the remainder of my visit. As with any airport restaurant, things were a bit pricey. Alicia (Ah-lee-see-ah) needs an attitude adjustment, or to get out of the food service industry. I hope she's proud of herself for making a mom cry. The kitchen was incredibly backed up because they were not prepared for the junior Olympics coming through town. We were warned when we came in that it would take a half an hour just to take our order. (The kitchen was backed up, but the servers were wandering around aimlessly. There's no reason it should take half an hour to put in an order.) I asked the food server if I could at least put in a drink order, but he said I would have to wait half an hour even for that(?!!?). I have a baby, so I could not sit at the bar. But I am breast-feeding and extremely dehydrated. There were two bartenders, and only a couple of people sitting at the bar. So I went up to the bar and asked for a soda. **Alicia** said I needed to place my order at the table. I said I just need a drink. It's not just that she said no for no reason, it was how rude she was. She said, "but those aren't bar drinks, are they?" And proceeded to ignore me. That is a new kind of low. That level of rudeness was unprecedented and unnecessary. She was serving food and drinks to people that were not ordering alcohol. There is no reason she could not have given a water or a soda to someone who couldn't sit at the bar. I was a food server. I understand what it's like. But when you are sitting around doing very little and ignoring a breast-feeding mother with a screaming baby out of spite, you need to re-think your career choice. We did the BYOB burger with turkey patty, mushroom mix, cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onions on a ciabatta bread. The burger was perfectly cooked, right amount of seasoning! So I just arrived at DSM and I'm hungry. What's a girl to do? Try the Iowan, also known as Iowa's famous pork tenderloin sandwich. The Iowan was alright, but nothing to write home about. There were no vegetables (tomato, lettuce, pickles) on the Iowan. Also, the fried pickles could've been a bit more crisp. But it's airport food and I've worked at an airport in the past. Simple set up: lunch counter to the left followed by bar-height bar all around the bar. Hi-tops and tables fill the place with a wall of glass overlooking the runways. It's a little spendy but not quite ridiculous when you figure it's delivery to the airport. Got one of four seats at the counter, was a couple minutes before I could ask for a pilsner and get a menu, long-ish but not annoyingly so. Clean crisp golden beer set up nicely and didn't linger or overstay it's welcome. I hate tasting my beer after I've finished it, it's not cleveland, it's just bad beer. Reuben Burger was an good effort but a little shy of 13. The patty was slightly past medium but still moist and flavory on marbled rye, toppings were a petite reuben sandwich (corned beef, sauerkraut, and so on.) I stop at Portermill every time I fly, but only because it's the only game in town at DIA. They are consistently out of just about every beer option on the menu (seemingly for the last two years), always desperately short staffed, and just seems to be run like a place that knows people don't have any other options. We stopped in today and had to change our orders three times because the place was out of grapefruit juice and decided to not turn their fryer on. We had plenty of time before our flight and decided to stop in for a late lunch. Great atmosphere with a huge bar. I ordered the meatloaf wrapped in bacon, it was very tender and my side of vegetables were crisp. The mashed potatoes had the skin in them and are chunky. Everything was well balanced and complimented each other. My son ordered the Juicy Lucy, sorry no picture, apparently he was hungry. But is definitely picky eater approved with the fried onions, he said it was very good and tasted just like he thought it should. A nice surprise in the Des Moines Airport. The place is much larger than it appears from the front with quite a bit of comfortable seating. I found a table where I could grab a bite, take a call, and get through a few emails before catching my flight. It was a bit noisy, but I guess that's to be expected when you have a bar. My server was pleasant and efficient and the restaurant itself was clean and well maintained. Oh.... My... goodness... the most delicious beer and food/fare in DSM airport. Forget Taco Pizza; the cheese curds with the lager ketchup should be named the new official state dish! This is the airport Portermill where you can get a seat by the window and kill some time or maybe buy a beer. Do not buy the Kendall Jackson Rose. I have had it before and all though there can be differences in vintages this brand is fairly consistent by design. It was rather awful. I had two sips (just to make sure it wasn't a mistake) and sent it back to the kitchen. Our waiter asked if I didn't like it. I did try and be polite (kept my voice down and was to the point) and let him know it wasn't good. Sadly the soup was dismal the burger did smell good I couldn't recommend it. Airport food is a little pricey and much is precooked and prepackaged but even with this low bar I would stay stick to the very basics. The restaurant was clean and comfortable. read more

I had a 5:40 flight so I stopped here for breakfast and I was delighted. The food was actually great. I got the farmers omelette and it was only 10.70 without tip. That is cheaper (or close to the same) than the crap sandwiches they have in the book stores. It seems like there are only two employees in the morning to service all the customers, set up the register, the restaurant, run food, and close tabs. The only reason I say that is because as a previous server I felt for the 2 girls working. Lexy was my server (I know from my receipt) and I was shocked at how she actually got to everyone and remembered everything. I had a tad bit of time before my flight so I thought I'd write a quick review and say the girls working the morning of 10/2 were fantastic and the food was great as well. So, I've been here before. I travel quite frequently to Des Moines for work. There is a nice restaurant bar before security. However, you should get through security, be comfortable in your ability to make your flight, and head to Portermill for drinks or food. I had two outstanding experiences and one average experience, so I have decided if you are going to be in the airport, you should visit Portermill. I usually just go there for an adult beverage before I get on the plane. However, the food that I have had there has been good; burgers, cheese curds (amazing) and I saw the salmon on somebody's plate and it looked tasty. I suggest you look for Metta or Matt at the bar, both are amazing servers and a great customer service experience. Matt makes a delicious margarita that I will definitely order again. I've been here twice so far, and the first time was maybe a 4 star as far as sit-down airport food goes. Drinks were decent, food selection was ok, all around, about up to par with what you can expect in a restaurant airport with a full service menu and bar. However, upon my second visit, I had to significantly reduce my rating, based on the fact that they appear to be out of everything! I tried to order the Roasted Beet Salad for the second time in a row, and was told yet again that they are out of beets (I guess the import time is long to Iowa...) I also tried to order Hendricks gin on the rocks. And if you're a Hendricks fan, you know that it is unlike any other gin. You can't get that cucumber infused deliciousness from Bombay or Tanqueray. And of course, I was told they are out of Hendricks too. C'mon guys, really??? Overall, the food, when they have it, is ok, and there are options to choose from when it comes to food and drinks. Dine with caution. Took 25 mins for my glass of wine to arrive, and my food (only an appetizer) never arrived, so after 45 minutes, I had to leave as my plane was about to start boarding. Hadn't eaten all day, don't get home til midnight, was REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS PRE-FLIGHT MEAL. But hey no worries, it must be a real challenge to run an airport restaurant properly. Stopped by here before a flight to Denver on the recommendation of my nephew. No tables were cleaned so we sat a waited at a table with our chairs slightly pushed away so it could be cleaned. Within the next thirty minutes parties sat at two other tables and were waited on while we still waited at a non bussed table. Perhaps we shouldn't have sat down, but it was a seat yourself situation. When we finally did get waited on, the server wasn't very happy to be there that day as she seemed very tired and crabby. We finally got served food and drinks, including 2 beers, 2 rum and cokes, a burger and a chicken sandwich. The total of the bill was $73 which seemed on the high need, especially considering the state of the chicken sandwich(picture attached). I wont eat pink chicken as it is highly likely that the possible campylobacter, salmonella and clostridium perfringens bacteria might not be cook out of the meat. The server seemed to be "put out" that I was unhappy with the chicken presentation. No offer to remove it from the bill was extended. Very disappointing and I'm sure I wont ever go back that. The Portermill provides an attractive layout and is overall a nice atmosphere. The service was good and the waitress had good feedback for all of our questions about the menu. We ordered the Reuben Burger and a Caesar salad with chicken. The burger comes with fries that are lightly salted that come appropriately cooked but I feel could use a bit more flavor as I felt they needed ketchup due to them not standing on their own. The burger I requested some pink and sadly it came out on the well done side of things making for a fairly dry burger. It has to be eaten quickly though as the sour kraut juices make the bread quite soggy in no time at all which may be offputting to some. I'd of liked a bit more dressing on it personally to help moisten it up a notch and bring through more of the natural Reuben flavors. If I were to do it again I'd just skip the patty and request a standard Reuben sandwich. The Caesar salad looked a bit meh, however the croutons were great. The chicken was a bit boring and flavorless but the Caesar dressing I'd say is a 5/10 but note that I am picky about my dressing wanting that original anchovy based thick Caesar dressing. Inside dsm airport, stopped in for breakfast before a flight. After what seemed like a while for an omelet, the wrong meal was sent out. The staff was very Apologetic and went back to the kitchen to fix it. I was supposed to get a veggie omelet that has sautéed spinach, cAramelized onion, tomato and a tomato jam. What I got was raw spinach, raw onions, tomato and no tomato jam. (Essentially a hot salad inside a blanket of eggs) With hash browns on the side that had only been cooked on one side. Too early to complain and didn't want to wait another unreasonable amount for them to fix it for the second time given that I had to catch my flight. Haven't had such a mediocre experience here in a while so maybe I caught them on an off day but I'll hesitate to come here from now on. read more
