We had the best adventure during our stay in Pinetop--a sunset horseback ride with Porter Mountain Stables! Our guide was a delightful young woman attending school in Tucson and studying nuclear medicine, which we thought was incredibly impressive. I have unfortunately forgotten her name, but she was absolutely wonderful, and we really enjoyed talking with her throughout the ride. The trail was easy, relaxing, and perfect for simply enjoying the scenery. We rode mostly through the beautiful pine trees and even passed alongside a small lake where geese were peacefully paddling around. The entire ride lasted about an hour and a half, which felt like the perfect amount of time. Both of our horses had such sweet personalities and were incredibly well behaved, making the experience comfortable and enjoyable from beginning to end. We also met the owner while checking in, and she has the cutest little store. Be sure to arrive early so you have time for a little impulse shopping before your ride! Porter Mountain Stables gave us such a memorable Pinetop experience. Remember to tip your guide, take lots of pictures, and enjoy every minute of your ride through the pines! read more

The experience here was horrible. From the very first interaction which should have been a red flag. However we decided to still book with them. I guess that makes us at fault, which based on reading the owners responses to negative reviews she is going to blame us anyways We were going for my bachelorette trip, my Maid of honor called to confirm rates, times etc. so she could let my bridal party know the exact amount it would be per person. The lady on the phone mentioned tips, naturally my MOH advised we will be tipping but asked if it was mandatory and if so what the amount was. That's when she was extremely rude and had a horrible attitude and basically had no interest in helping us anymore. We chalked it up to everyone has a bad day. A few weeks later we call back to make the reservations, we thought it was odd that they told us if we cancel within 24 hours they we would be charged 50% and a 20% tip, yet they didn't ask for a card number to have on file. The day before the trip we noticed it was raining a ton, so I called the stables to confirm if they would still be riding or cancelling the ride. They advised "we ride rain or shine, we would only pull the ride if the lightening is too close and it becomes dangerous. However, we have rain jackets for everyone if we need them." Cool I was super excited, we went ahead and went to our cabin in Heber, the next day we drove 55 mins one way, we get to the stables. When we got there, there were multiple people outside and not a single person greeted us, there were no horses saddled up. Finally someone comes out to walk the dog and she asks if she can help us. She couldn't even be bothered to walk up to us or stop messing with her 50 foot dog leash got 5 mins to talk to their customers. When we mentioned we were there for the sunset ride, she replied "oh no we cancelled the ride because of the rain." When asked why we were not notified she said she called all 3 rides that were scheduled (which would have been the 3 of us) and left a voicemail. We mentioned not a single one of us got a call and she said "well it's irrelevant since we cancelled the ride, we can try to reschedule you for tomorrow but that would only work if it doesn't rain at all." We said no thanks and left. There was no apology, and absolutely no accountability. I would 10/10 NOT recommend going here, especially if it's for a very special time like YOUR bachelorette trip. Or if you have to travel to do it. I noticed they are a small wedding venue as well, all I can say is RUN, don't let your special day be ruined by these horrible business owners. read more

Had a blast at this place. Just did the 1-hour trail ride, which was plenty long for a couple of us "city folk." Been on a handful of horseback rides before, but the last thing you want is to not be able to walk the rest of the day, so for those more inexperienced or that don't frequently ride, the 1-hour is perfect. Our ride was beautiful and the weather was perfect (thank you NE Arizona in October). The staff were friendly, and guide was knowledgable, chatting with us the whole ride and answering all our questions. We got pretty lucky and were the only 2 on our excursion so we kind of got he private tour experience! A beautiful property and some nice souvenir items in the barn. What a FANTASTIC option for horseback riding!! I have been horseback riding for decades! This was the first time on a trail ride that we got to take the horses through water! We walked through the creek MULTIPLE times!!! My horse was a BLAST!! He had a lot of fun energy! Of course, they ask first about your riding level/experience. I am highly experienced with riding, and they gave me a very fun horse!!! They gave my teen the perfect horse as well, a horse with some personality, but not as feisty as mine! My teen also has some experience. Don't claim that you have experience if you don't!! Trust me, just don't do it. While these horses are used to being on the trail, they each have very unique personalities. You must be matched with the right horse to maximize your safety and your ability to control the horse (easy versus possibly a bit challenging)!! There is so much beauty throughout this trail!! As many trail rides that we have been on, this was by far our favorite!! read more

Wow! What a great day at the stables for our family! 3 big kids (14, 12, and 10 ) enjoyed something, TOGETHER! They felt comfortable with the wranglers and safe on the ride. I've been dying to do this for a long time and finally got around to it today. Due to my back and leg problems and the fact I am on oxygen 24/7 and my POC only lasts so long I had to go with the shortest tour, the one hour tour, but being as I haven't been on a horse in years and my age is catching up with me, that was more than enough. I had a blast! My horses name was Bell, the guides horse was Steel, and took us through some muddy terrain due to the rains that have been hitting us for the past couple of weeks. Best in the area! I've been on other rides in the area and this one is the best! The mixed terrain of field, creek, lakeside, and forest is so amazing! The horses are beautiful and well cared for with beautiful long tails. My guide kept the perfect level of banter, explaining the points of interest, making you feel welcome, but not overly chatty. Another great plus is that the horses kept a nice big space between themselves, not riding nose to backside, as I've seen happen on many other rides. It was an exceptionally great experience. My wife and our 2 boys (6 and 11 yr old) took a sunset ride up around Scott's reservoir with Allen. It was a GREAT experience. This was my youngest's 2nd time on a horse and he loved it! Loose saddle. 9 year old fell off horse. This was our second visit. The first time I took my 7 year old daughter for her first ride and had a great time. She was made to feel comfortable for her first time and shown what to do with the reigns, or if the horse bends down to eat or stops to goto the bathroom. My 9 year old son is more of a nervous person and it was his first time, which I told the ladies at check in. Maybe because it was a holiday weekend, but they really didn't show or tell him anything about how to handle the horse. There was no instruction or anything, we just were plopped on horses and took off. Less than 1 minute into the ride I called out to the wrangler that my son's saddle seemed awfully tilted to the left, but he just glanced at my son and told him to sit up straight. Less than 1 minute after that the saddle slide all the way to the horse's left flank and my son fell off of the horse and onto a rock. Both he and my daughter were crying and frightened. The saddle was not secure in the LEAST! The wrangler got off and helped him and admitted he should have checked when I told him it wasn't straight. He had my son get back on the horse after he calmed down which I appreciated, so he's not traumatized from ever trying this again. We walked the less than 2 minutes back to the start and were helped off the horses. Then left alone. No one came to apologize, check on my son, offer a refund or anything until after 5 minutes I flagged someone down who simply said, "we'll refund you." Totally disappointed that A. not securing a saddle seems amateur and very dangerous and B. in the dropped ball with professional follow-up when someone, a child in this case, gets injured at your facility. Thank goodness he wasn't more hurt. If you're a parent thinking about taking your child for your first time you may want to look elsewhere. read more

What a huge disappointment! Ride at 10:30. They want the tip up front (really?). By the time we left it was 11. Our guide barely spoke. He checked his watch constantly. We felt like we were interrupting his day. We were back in 35-40 mins later (guess his watch didn't work!). Literally, dismounted and no one said a word. Awkward!!! What a wonderful time!! Our WHOLE family was able to experience the horses, trails, and nature together. These stables went above and beyond to make this experience amazing for us. My daughter has special needs, and Porter Mountain Stables treated her and our whole family with kindness and respect. They even went above and beyond in having a side rider just to be sure she would be safe. The kindness made our hearts so happy. The trail was beautiful, the water in the lake and streams were a wonder for all to see (especially my daughter with special needs), and the horses were great. Second time riding at Porter and it wasn't as good as last summer. I call day before to ride at 4:30 and was confirmed, and I was the only rider! Great, well a few minutes later I get a call and they said that time won't work so I picked 8am and again I was told it would be just me. I arrive early like they ask and two female wranglers where watering a couple horses. No one welcomed me or even asked if I was there for a ride. I went into barn and signed myself in with liability form. Still no one around, finally a guy comes in and I pay for a two hour ride and he said something like"I'll get your horse " Still waiting after 8 so another party of 3 pulls in to ride. No one told me we where waiting on some other people or that they call to say they where lost. Not good customer service. Horses where healthy and fit, tack was good, place was neat but ride was short! I paid for two hours and I want a full two hours, I wasn't the ones who where lateBailey was our wrangler and she was nice. The ice cave ride is a joke. It's fenced off so all you see from the back of a horse is a small hole with a lot of trash around. That is very misleading and should not even be mentioned as it was quite a let down. I asked to go on a different trail as I did this one last summer but was told that it is the two hour ride trail. Come on with the whole forest next to the stables there's got to be so many more trail available. read more

We came here for a little adventure for our city slicker kids. The staff was friendly and helpful. There was even an arts and crafts area where folks could paint horseshoes as souvenirs. The price for an hour ride was more than fair, and there were stairs for easy mounting and dismounting as well as helmets of all sizes for safety of the youngsters.
