Take Out Perfection! We have always eaten in the restaurant previously, but tonight we opted to grab take out. Our food was fantastic and plentiful as always but what really stood out tonight was the way our food was packaged to go. Obvious care was taken with how our meals were presented, it was really impressive! I have had take out from sit down establishments before, but often they would cut corners in their to go orders with garnish or portions. Everything we received tonight was organized as though they took our plated food and slide it gently into a package. Even the mint and strawberry coulis that tops our Torta Al Cioccolata was decoratively presented. I just cannot say enough good things about this restaurant and the wonderful people within. We had eaten here several times and the food was very good... so much so that we invited friends to join us last nite. Us girls had halibut...we're not complainers and ate it but it was not fresh and parts of it were quite fishy tasting. The asparagus was limp and the potatos were fried cubes. We complained at the end and the waitress deducted 10 %. ($3.60 off each halibut). Our fault...we should have complained at the first taste of "fishy". The guys had pasta...1 was very good...the other mediocre. Really disappointed...this restaurant used to be so good... we won't be going back anytime soon. read more

Service terrible. We had to ask for wine to be open, to order to get our bill. Food is pre done in the sauces so they can not change anything on a dish if you have allergies etc. food was good, nice place but don't expect service. They weren't busy. I just read other reviews and they also said the service was bad. It's almost like they don't want you to order drinks and food, they would prefer you just to sit and sit all night. The owner was there but he did not welcome you to the restaurant or say bye when you left. For a community restaurant this is discouraging as it does not make you feel like supporting your community restaurant even though the food is decent. Not sure if we will give it another try. We had a more positive review, but after tonight, will never return. After calling BOTH listed phone numbers for 2 days, and leaving 4 messages for a call back, we arrived just after 5pm Sunday night only to be told we could not be seated. We have been coming here since it opened, and the waiter even recognized us...still, with 8+ empty tables, long term customers are turned away. Thanks for your very short term memories. We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at the Sawmill. I hope in your next business venture, you think about the customers who helped you build your business a bit more. In truthfulness, I feel like I need to give this spot a 2.5, not so much for the quality of the food, which was good, however, for the claim that it is "authentic genovese". Having been to Liguria, my companion being from there (born and raised) and family that is from there and lives there, to make the claim that certain items on the menu are "genovese" when they are not prepared in that manner is not a good thing. For the record, the food is not bad...it was good. My issue is with the fact that I was told that this restaurant makes "authentic" genovese cuisine. The chef is from Rome and is good at what he does. However, he is NOT genovese. The owner, very nice person ran a restaurant in Milan (also not in Liguria region). The focaccia bread we were served to start was quite good and well done. The outside was crisp and the inside had a really nice texture and you could taste the olive oil :-) Hurrah!! The "Vitello tonnato", the appetizer was quite tasty and good. My enthusiasm continues :-9 It is at this point where my enthusiasm starts to waiver.... We were served the "Minestrone alla genovese". There is NO pancetta in Minestrone alla genovese....as well, it is MUCH thicker than what we were served. It was tasty, no question, however, call it "Zuppa di Verdure" which is a much more accurate statement of what you are really serving. Along with the "zuppa", we had the "Lasagne al Pesto". For as good as they could have been, they included Besciamela sauce (NO such thing to add to anything "pesto" in Liguria) with the Pesto :-( which hid the taste of the pesto. Of everything I had, the Lasagne were my least favourite, I have to admit. For dessert, we had Panna Cotta. Again, NOT a Ligurian dessert ...in fact, given the time of year, Pandolce would have been wonderful (a nice, dense cake with candied fruit, NOT to be confused with Panettone). I won't not recommend Porta Romana. The food is solid and reasonable. Again, when we went, I was told (and thus really looked forward) that it was an Italian restaurant that focused on genovese regional cuisine....call me a pain in the palate, but when I am told (and assured) such a thing, I look forward to it as I do miss Italian REAL regional cuisine. Perhaps I will venture out to it again, however, given the distance, I won't be going anytime before the first day of Spring....the drive out to Spruce Grove can be brutal with our pitch black evenings now and icy roads are not kind. read more

Love this place. Been about a half dozen times over the last year. Biggest thing for me, consistency. Always fantastic food. Hand-made pasta, delicious homemade bread, and fresh ingredients, true Italian style. Often there are new servers, but the owners keep them on top of things at all times. Never waiting, never bothered, just right. Probably the most knowledgeable of them has an amazing voice, he should be on the radio... And always to top it off, the owner visits us to check in on our dinner every time. He really makes it feel like a family place. We had not been to this restaurant for several years because it really wasn't very good after our first couple of visits. But we were in the area and thought we might try it again. A serious of mis-steps ensured we will never return. One of the water glasses had lipstick on it. The menu was paper, damp and spotted with food and whatever else. The ravioli was dead cold in some areas and hot in others. It was tough enough that it bounced back when you snapped it with a finger. When asked by one of the servers about the meal we explained the situation with no response. Another server came by and when she saw the uneaten ravioli she asked about it and again we explained. Through all of this the owner was standing by the pos desk. A few minutes later the first server was sent out to tell us that the ravioli would be taken off the bill while the owner looked on from the pos desk. If it was my business I would have been the one to come out from behind the pos desk and speak with the guests. After all the owner is responsible for the kitchen and the product, not the server. read more

I went to Porta Romana with my family last week - and loved it! This time around we didn't get any appies (though my dad claims he has had several and loved them). I ordered the Petto Di Pollo Pipieno (chicken stuffed with spinach and cheese, on top of mashed potatoes and covered in a mushroom sauce). It was fantastic - the chicken was cooked to perfection and was the centerpiece, the 'stuffing' was amazing - and the mushroom sauce so decadent. I didn't love the roasted veggies on the side (half of it was long stems of mushroom... and really - who likes mushroom stems?). The mashed potatoes were good but not great - a little too milky and runny for my tastes. But they, I think, were meant to add some moisture to the dish more than anything. The house wine was good - though I'm always a little skeptical about restaurants that bring you a litre in a decanter already poured, and don't even ask a table member to try it first. Definitely took this place down a slight notch in the class department. The Torta Al Cioccolato was amazing - I actually prefer gluten-free cake over flour cakes. And the ice cream on top definitely made it. Overall a great little Italian restaurant - especially if you're in Spruce Grove and don't feel like trekking all the way to Edmonton. read more

Me and my lady have gone here many times. Always a wonderful experience. Sunshine was our server most of the time and was very lovely to deal with. She gave us her opinion and recommendations and knew the menu front and back. The chicken entree is a generous portion and is a favourite of ours. I usually get the beef tenderloin which is always cooked to perfection and paired with a wonderful sauce. My wife and I decided to try out this restraunt for date night. We had made reservations and arrived on time, were seated immediatly. The server brought us water and bread which was very good. My wife had salmon with a peppercorn sauce. The salmon was cooked well, however the peppercorn sauce was very bland. The mashed potatos were very milky. I ordered the seafood spaghetti. The sauce was very good, however the calamari was extremely tough and very fishy. Would not order this again. To sum up our experiance, the service was great, the food not as much. I've been to Porta Romana twice now, and am already planning my next visit! The food is authentic Italian, and offers a lot more creativity than the standard "North American" idea of Italian cuisine. The chef was brought directly from Italy, and it shows in the originality of the menu. The appetizers are unique; the grilled veggies with goat cheese is a must-try! My first meal was the Tagliolini, a fresh hand-made pasta served with scallops and asparagus tips in a white wine sauce. Although I wanted to order the same dish on my second visit (it was so amazing!) I opted for the special of the day - Spaghetti Seafood. I was impressed by the generous portions of seafood in each dish; definitely good value for your money. Desserts are very creative, and there's a good selection. The meringue with fresh whipped cream and strawberries is so light, it's like eating a cloud, and the white chocolate cream with lime sorbet is a perfect mix of flavours to end a great meal. Allow enough time to enjoy a fresh-prepared Italian feast - good food takes time to prepare! read more

I loved Porto Romana. The restaurant is beautifully designed, with very large booths and gorgeous chandeliers. The staff was very pleasant, and the man who seated us was incredibly nice. All of the pasta here is handmade, and did not disappoint. There were plenty of scallops in my pasta, and the wine sauce was wonderful. Even the house Chianti was fantastic. I really wanted to like this place considering Spruce Grove has so little to offer in terms of restaurants. After going twice I realized it wasn't what i hoped it would be, but against my better judgment, I went a third time. To start we shared a plate of prosciutto wrapped cantaloupe. I had seen online a few places and it's usually shown as melon balls with prosciutto folded on top with some sort of sauce. At porta romana they do it a little differently. 3 massive chunks of cantaloupe come wrapped up in the fattiest saltiest prosciutto I've ever tasted. We unwrapped the meat (which felt like i was taking the tape off of a hockey stick) and discovered all the pieces of melon looked like they were hacked up with a machete. We ate what we could of the salty, warm cantaloupe, but it still contained a lot of green so we added them to the pile of untouched prosciutto. For our mains, I got the tagliolini scallops and my date got the gnocchi portifino. My dish did not taste too bad but the pasta was overcooked which was disappointing to see at an Italian restaurant. My dates gnocchi did not seem to taste or feel like homemade, but it was hard to tell because it was DROWNING in this basil pesto "sauce" which was very goopy and unappetizing. Neither of us finished our plates and were still hungry, so we decided to try our luck with the desserts. I got the panna cotta which was about as good as the rest of the meal. But my date got the tiramasu which was quite good. By far the highlight of the meal. If you live in Spruce Grove and are craving Italian, the drive to Edmonton is definitely worth it. read more

Great meal, great atmosphere and service! The service isn't as fast as chain restaurants (Joeys, State&Main etc) but that adds to the charm of a family owned, well loved business. The manager sounded like he was really Italian, and after the meal (and AMAZING dessert) we had, I would be proud to take my Italian uncle out here when he visits from Toronto. The food was piping hot and both our dishes tasted completely unique. We can't wait to go back and try more off the menu. Three of us ladies were looking forward to dinner at this restaurant. Everything started out fine and we ordered our entrées - I ordered the seafood pasta dish which stated came with a tomato and white wine sauce - it arrived and it looked beautiful ! The seafood on it was large and beautiful. After tasting it my lips were stinging and I checked to see that there was red chilli flakes in the dish - which I am allergic to. I asked my dining partners to make sure that it was the chilli flakes in the dish and made sure to re-check the menu which stated nothing of the spicy factor. I informed the waitress and asked if they could make it exactly the same without the chilli flakes - she checked with the kitchen and said it was impossible since the sauce was already made! You would think the cook - chef would be able to whip up the same dish with a simple garlic white wine sauce? I was very disappointed and had to order a second dish and wait for it while my dining partners finished their meal- It would've been nice to either have been compensated for my meal in some manner but the bill did not reflect anything-not pleased. This oversight could at least reflect this on the menu- not pleased. read more

We went there Friday night March 2, 2018 just before the big snowfall hit. I have been to many Italian restaurants in the city of Edmonton. This was a little out of the way but we'll worth the drive. All I can say there were 3 of us we all enjoyed our dishes. The tagliolini house made noodles with scallops and asparagus tips were cooked to perfection. Scallops were perfect not overdone. We all had deserts. I had the meringata with strawberries delish! My friend had the Tiramisu best one she said she ever tasted. My husband had the house chocolate brownie with a scoop of ice cream and sliced strawberries on top. We all tasted it and agreed! This desert was made in heaven!!! You must try!!!
