Port City Java is a great Wilmington area alternative to Starbucks. This Southport location is located in the heart of the downtown core next to the Amuzu theater and has bright and welcoming interiors. After a somewhat disappointing experience at one of the Wilmington Port City Java locations where my drink was overloaded with ice, I made sure to ask to ask if it can be made with less ice, and the staff delivered by making a Mocha Freeze that was smooth and great tasting. It wasn't too sweet and more importantly, it wasn't over 40% ice. While it wasn't the best crafted drink I've had at a coffee shop, it was a solid 4.5/5 experience, which I'm happy to round up since the service was warm and friendly. Last night, the night of the Christmas parade, the two employees working were absolutely swamped! PCJ was the only coffee shop opened on a cold night. Seems like this has become a regional staple. I've been to this shop a few times in the last couple weeks when working in the Southport area. Very clean and friendly staff. Latte itself was well balanced but if you get a flavor added they do three squirts so it comes out very very sweet. So beware of that if you aren't super into sweets. They have a decent amount of flavoring beyond just the typical coffee shop basics. I haven't tried any food but it appears to be popular as most people are ordering some food item when I have been in. The ordering and pick up area is pretty small but it does appear for heavier traffic times they have an outside window for service as well. Location is fabulous for grabbing a coffee to take 1 block to the waterfront to enjoy on one of Southport's multiple porch swings or picnic areas as you watch the fishing and shrimp boats go by. read more

Established in 1995, this quaint coffee house boasts their own roasted beans and it is delicious. It's simple. It's warm. It's inviting. What it's not is overpriced. At a glance, you'll notice a few small tables outside and a convenient "to-go" window that you can walk up to and order without ever having to go inside. I thought that was pretty unique! Inside the space is bigger than it looks from the outside. And as you make your way towards baristas, you'll see another room to your right with more seating. My suggestions? The wifi is free but I couldn't imagine using this cafe to study or do work unless it was first thing in the morning. This spot is popular with many, many people going in and out. Servers are incredibly slow and unorganized and while I waited in line forever I watched them either get complaints from customers over forgotten items or just make drinks wrong. A favorite spot but got closed down during our trip due to covid. I love this location when I'm on vacation. I'll usually stay in Oak Island and go in to Southport in the afternoon's for coffee and to walk around downtown. This year on vacation I was a able to stop here for one day prior to a COVID outbreak shutting the place down. Outside that they seemed to have pretty good operations during COVID going on. The indoor dining/seating area had been totally removed and the pick up window was the only way to order. Much like the rest of Oak Island and Southport the masks/face coverings situation is pretty fickle at the coast. While waiting in line to get my usual order of iced coffee with coconut flavoring there were very few people wearing masks in line and not really social distancing at all. The people inside were mostly wearing masks and gloves and seemed to be doing pretty well. While my first visit went very smoothly with their new COVID setup is pretty good compared to other places in Oak Island. I was glad that Port City Java was so transparent about things going on at their establishment but bummed they didn't have things together to more quickly turn around the store after exposure. Looking forward to returning to this store next year. It's a favorite spot in Southport. read more

With the closing of our beloved Flying Pig in Oak Island, we were I'm excited to give Port City Java a try! They offer just about everything, sans cold brew (but have nitro). The food was pretty good and the coffee was tasty - perfect for our drive home. A perk of being in the south: everyone is so friendly. The staff was sweet and accommodating and even other patrons were lovely to chat with while we all socially distanced and waited. I even had the pleasure of chatting up some fellow Chicago Cubs fans! Nice stop, we ordered egg and cheese croissants and coffee. The coffee is delicious and sandwiches were piping hot and the children (10&11 yo) were impressed with them. The shop is much like a Starbucks setup as far as food and such. Many options however the prices weren't as low as what I expected when indicated by the $ on yelp when I searched for it. This establishment would have gotten 1 star, but the items we got were actually tasty. It was the quality of the product that kept this review from being 1 star. The customer service was -5. So it was the last day of my birthday celebration. My birthday was on the 2nd but I was visiting family. We decided to go to Port City Java because it had been a while since we have been there. I asked for a Java Shake. The girls behind the counter look at me like I have 3 heads. I know PCJ used to have a Java Shake; I am not crazy. I ask how long it's been and they say a few years. Fair enough. So I ask WHAT THEY HAVE THAT IS SIMILAR. I am doing their job, basically. They say they have a slushie drink that is similar to the Frappuccino. I'm thinking, "Well if this is the best I can get then okay." Then I realize that my brother who was with me asked for a Mocha Shake and he got one. I asked him, "How did you get a shake?" And he said, "I just asked for one." So it was then that I realized that they had a shake they just changed the name. So these girls behind the counter, who seemed to delight in my ignorance, could have easily offered me another SHAKE instead of the slushie coffee that I thought I had to take. I said, "So basically because I did not say the right words, you're going to just....So what I would have said is, "No, we do not have the Java Shake but we do have the Espresso shake."" So they are the morons but they are trying to make me out to be the moron. Wow, okay. I left them NO tip and my brother suggested that he wait for the order and not me. I took my seat near the window. I must admit, the Espresso shake was very good. It's a shame I had to go through an act of congress to get it. I also wanted to find it on the menu but was not able to. A girl (there were about 3 working at the time) finally told me those items are under "Blended". Um, maybe tell me that when I walk in the door? Not everyone shops at PCJ every day. In fact, I am from out of town. It was then that I selected the Espresso Shake when I finally found it on the menu. So after we are done with our shakes and get in the car to leave, my brother said he actually had to non-verbally cue the girls to "get going" on the shakes. I said to him, "Do you think if you had not done that would we have gotten any shakes at all?" He said "No. They were just standing there." I said, "What do these girls think work is? I mean really?" I don't know who is going to get this review but these girls need a lesson in BASIC customer service. They have no clue how to help customers. None. Zero. I work in customer service; I should know. They also need to develop a sense of urgency. In any and all places you work, there should be a sense of urgency. People are in a hurry; they want their stuff as soon as possible. Not saying you have to kill yourself but let's go at a speed faster than zero. And the customer should not have to tell you to do your job or how to do your job. You should already know. And if you do NOT know, then that is what training is for. I will not be back here until you can get some staff who knows how to treat people. read more

I am a regular at PCJ in Southport and enjoy getting my mocha fix everyday. . Lately due to the lack of help, there are sometimes long wait times, and this is not even the busy summer season. A lot of the time there are only 2 workers to handle an large influx of customers. I have also been disappointed lately in the quality of the products I have received. The ice machine in the front of the store has been broken for quite some time now. Having to have ice sitting out in an open container causes it to become very wet, and that causes the frozen beverages to not have as much flavor or consistency. I hope that these issues can be fixed, so that not only I can continue to enjoy my daily visit, but others can as well. read more

I really like to visit a Port City Java when I'm in NC but this particular location was very disappointing. It was not remotely busy (one person in front of us in line and no one behind us), when we got up to order the girl was nice but quiet and not helpful when asked questions/gave very short responses. Once we ordered, I stood in line to use the bathroom for probably 30 minutes only to find it completely disgusting. Once I was done, my smoothie had still not been made and we had to remind them and they did not seem very happy about it. I will say, the smoothie was really good, so there is a silver lining to this tale. Anyway, I usually enjoy coming to this place for coffee, just choose a different location. read more
