I woke up early and decided to take a drive and get the kids something sweet for breakfast. So where to go? Should I go into Louisville or towards Frankfort? I jumped on my trusty Yelp app and looked up bakeries and found Poppy's Bakery in Frankfort. I've been to Frankfort numerous times; but, had never taken a drive down that road. I am so glad I tried Poppy's out. From the moment I got out of my car I could smell the fresh baked goodies. One word.....heavenly. The lady working was so patient with me after I told her this was my first visit. Everything looked so delicious. I chose an assortment or cinnamon rolls, raspberry filled donuts, cheese danish and cherry cream Cheese danish. When I say this was the best danish Ive ever had I mean it! The danishes almost had a brûléed texture. One bite into that initial crunch then sweet, pillowy dough. My heavens...I'll be going there plenty. They had a wide variety of baked yummies that I'm sure would get a thumbs up from even the toughest critic. Thanks Yelp for the recommendation. I honestly would've never drove that way otherwise. The red velvet doughnut is one of the most amazing and unique ones I have tasted. We had stopped in for a treat while visiting Buffalo Trace. We also had the Bavarian-filled maple long John. I've ordered sheet cakes, royal iced cookies, cupcakes, donuts, and today tried the cronut. This is not a daily item so I recommend following them on social media to see when these are available. 10/10 the best donut type item I've eaten. I chose the traditional cinnamon, but iced flavors are also available including vanilla and blueberry (likely others). Restaurant is clean with plenty of space to sit and eat if you choose. A very serviceable bakery with good doughnuts at an affordable price. We stopped by on our way to grab bourbon at Buffalo Trace and the donuts were a good add for the trail. These are the best donuts I've ever had! We took a weekend trip to visit some distilleries and saw this on our way to one. We were amazed by how good they were! They are so fresh. I traveled to Poppy's Bakery to give it a shot one weekend and I barely saw that the place was open, as I had to look for the open sign. When I got inside, there was a nice cashier who took my order and gave me 4 donuts: a blueberry cake, old fashioned, caramel glazed long john, & a regular yeast. One thing I should warn people from the donuts I tried is that the donuts I had were a bit greasy, so it might mess with your stomach if you eat enough. The old fashioned tasted like a Danish butter cookie, which is my favorite kind of old fashioned donut. The blueberry cake was more greasy than the others, so I didn't finish it. The caramel long john was good, the cream trying to break out of the bottom of the donut. The yeast was a generic good yeast donut. Overall, it was a decent place to try out! read more

Maybe I love donuts too much or maybe this place REALLY is as good as it gets, but Poppy's has fantastic donuts. But really, is it hard to mess up donuts? While I have never actually eaten inside Poppy's, I frequently purchase donuts for pick up for my office. I typically get 2 of the two dozen of the assorted donuts. The website makes it easy to see what they will have on a typical day. Plus, 24 donuts are only 20$ which I think is a pretty good deal. As long as you call in 24 hours before pick up, your donuts will be ready. My favorite donuts are the Cream Filled Chocolate Covered donut and the Coconut Sprinkle Decorated Cake donut. Poppy's does not just have donuts though, you can get muffins, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, pies and brownies. I highly recommend this place for your bakery needs in Frankfort. read more
