From the outside, the Wellington looks pretty dingy (although it looks a lot better than it did when it was the Cask!) once you step inside you will be treated to a hunge range of real ales from several regularly changing guest breweries. There is the central bar area with a small room on one side of the pub, with a lounge bar on the other side. There is also a small beer garden at the rear which has been created since the smoking ban. Prices are very reasonable and there is a decent range of traditional bar snacks like crisps and pork scratchings. The staff are very friendly and will help you choose the right beer for you. The back room is where the music is played, and there's always a good audience whether it be a local rock band or a traditional Irish session. There's also the well-decorated lounge which is stocked with token Guinness paraphernalia or my favourite spot the room behind the bar complete with cubby hole. From here you can shout your order through and beat the queues. Feel like a local celebrity! And there's plenty to order: one of Sheffield's best ranges of Irish and Scottish whiskey/whisky is here as well as knowledgeable staff who know what they're serving. The main arena is quite large and due to it's size the atmosphere is great - but only when it is full. There is also a lounge around one side of the arena which is good if you are not interested in the support acts and want to chat. As well as live music, the Octagon hosts a club night on Friday, however I find that the size of the room has an adverse affect on the atmosphere. As a Student's Union venue drinks are very reasonably priced, even for gigs.

The area outside, at the immediate rear, has been decked and covered over and the car park has been improved immensly. There is a childrens play area and it is very evident that this is a family friendly pub. The food is from a well balanced, unpretentious and reasonably priced menu and is always spot on. It's hard to resist a delicious beef baguette with gravy and real chunky home made chips! As well as providing a great place to drink and eat, The Flying Ferret is making a difference in Shelley as a place to meet and is doing great fund raising for various local charities.
