Until I went to Pompelmo Gelateria, if you asked me if I liked gelato, I'd say it's fine, but I'm not a big ice cream/gelato person (lactose ). BUT Mel makes absolutely killer, world renowned gelato that it's flipped my whole perspective on gelato. She and her team are so good about allergens and cross-contamination- there's always multiple gluten-free and vegan options that make no sacrifices in taste or texture. My go-to is some sort of fruit flavor (limoncello/mojito/forest berry) + dark chocolate and it always slaps. Last- I have mad respect to business owners who continue to work in their shop day in and day out. Owner and employee were super friendly/patient. There's street parking in the front and parking lots close by to walk to. We were a party of 3 that came on a Saturday evening. The place had a few guests but they were patient while we looked at the various size options and flavors. We got 3 single scoops with a fresh waffle cone. I loved the smell of the fresh cones in the air the second we walked in. We even ordered samples to bring home. This place is a must stop since the flavor options change weekly and made fresh! AHHH so good! So much better than ice cream. There is never a flavor I don't like! The shop always smells like waffle cones when you walk in and the shop is very accommodating to dietary restrictions, with lots of gluten free flavors and vegan sorbets. Pompelmo Gelateria was a stop for the 6th Annual Search for the Best Scoop Shop RI with RI Food Fights. I liked the unique flavors at Pompelmo Gelateria. I had their taste the tropics which had dragon fruit, passion fruit, pineapple, mango and ginger. This was such a unique flavor and it tasted delicious. It also came with a waffle cookie. I absolutely adore this Gelateria. It's located in downtown Westerly and it is closed during the winter season just fyi. They have award winning flavors and a bright and welcome store front and interior. I've literally been counting down the days until they are open and I can go and get my first few scoops. Was in the area for the day. We stopped in after lunch before our drive home. It's a very cute store that is brightly decorated. The owner is very inviting and explained all the flavors of gelato she had. My husband and I shared the coconut samoa which is like the Girl Scout cookie. It was good just the right amount of all the flavors. One of my daughters had the mint chocolate chip, and my other daughter had the dulce de leche. Both loved theirs. We were just down the street a couple doors at Tapped Apple when they reminded me that there was legit gelato within spitting distance. I blew that popsicle stand post-haste and found myself in the loving embrace of Pompelmo Gelateria. I wish that we were not just visiting Westerly for a couple hours as I would have come back another time to try another flavor of this cold deliciousness, or maybe one of the sandwiches with cookies. I appreciate a couple who's gone to Italy to learn to make gelato, and there are few places to get a good gelato in Rhode Island (I'm thinking Newport and Block Island...are there others?) so this was an exciting find! As far as gelato goes, I had one I really loved (the chocolate cherry) and one that was okay (peanut butter). I'd say if you're in the area, it's a definite thumbs up and check it out. But I don't know if I'll make a day trip down to Westerly again JUST for gelato (but I will be back, I'm sure!) PS. The scoops are true Italian size, not American. We normally don't drive to Southern RI, but we had a voucher for the RI Food Fights ice cream passports. I am so glad it was included! The shop is small, but very clean and colorful. We were immediately welcomed by a young lady behind the counter. I never know what flavors to get anywhere, and she allowed us to try multiple flavors without any issue (we arrived around 730pm with no line). Each flavor was rich and creamy, it was still hard to decide! I finally decided on a small mascarpone fig and my boyfriend chose the Reese's cup. We both were super thrilled with our choices! We popped by Westerly this past weekend and decided to visit Pompelmo. I love ice cream, but gelato is next level and I have a pretty high bar for what I consider really good gelato. (Having gelato for four months straight will do that to you - and yes, I did study abroad in Rome) I will try any gelato you put in front of me, and you can find amazing gelato in the states. Pompelmo comes so close, but the texture is a little too much like ice cream for me. Despite this I really enjoyed the flavors - I chose birthday cake and Nutella. I wanted to go with a more traditional flavor and an experimental one to get a sense for their flavors and textures. It's also one of the few places that excel at Dairy-Free and Vegan options. Their DF chocolate is a must try.
