Mana is great! I understand why it's so hard to get on with her. She listens to your needs and is very kind. Wonderful experience.

Just got my hair cut by Flora and am so in love with it! I asked for about 3-3.5 inches off with long layers, more of a straight cut and she took the perfect amount off. My hair is pretty thick so she ended of thinning it a little and I ended up really liking it. She also showed me how to attain the style I want at home when she styled my hair which I'm very grateful for! Thank you Flora! read more

Pomp & Proper - Hair Salons Near Me - Vancouver, British Columbia

I went here as it was close and the reviews on yelp were good and I needed/wanted a change after not having a hair cut for 6 months due to a new baby. I was disappointed, not by the salon but by the stylist, Shane. When we discussed my cut he didn't really have any suggestions. I told him my requirements (wanted to go from mommy to a bit yummy, needed to be easy to maintain, I am willing to blow dry and style) but he didn't say too much, rather followed my lead as opposed to giving me different options. I was the one to mention bangs. Then I got my hair washed and conditioned but no massage with the conditioner. What is up with that? It takes 2 minutes and is something I really look forward to with a hair cut. Then I got doused with the nozzle and had water all over my face and shirt. It wasn't a huge deal but in 25 years of salon hair cuts, I've never had that happen. Then he spent about 15 minutes cutting my hair and it didn't appear he paid much attention. I'm used to stylists cutting, blow drying and going back to do a bit of clean up with the scissors. None of that here. I've since gone to another salon and stylist who said that my cut, while all right didn't show a lot of technical finesse which is why I think my cut was so quick. By the time I was done I ended up with a nicely styled, slightly cleaner version of the haircut I had before. I did get a 25% discount for being a new customer and getting wet. I don't know if the stylist had a late night the night before, didn't care or just isn't good in the morning (the cut was at 10am). Even with the discount, it wasn't worth $50 for a mediocre half hour experience. read more

I have been coming to Pomp & Proper since it opened in early 2009. The salon is small and inviting. The staff are friendly and unpretentious, unlike another salon on Main St that shall remain nameless. I am always offered tea or coffee the minute I sit down to wait, which I really appreciate. The salon also offers the opportunity to change into a robe before a haircut, even if you're not having your hair coloured. I never have to worry about little hairs getting caught in my clothes and itching me afterward. Alicia has been cutting my hair since I started going to Pomp & Proper, so I can't comment on abilities the other stylists. She does a wonderful job each time. Unfortunately I just entered the corporate world and thus have an intentionally "business" haircut for the time being, but I know she can work wonders with avant-garde cuts too, if that's your thing. Prices are reasonable, you can usually get an appointment within a week, and they offer free fringe trims. read more

Susan is a great stylist! I went in over the summer and said "do whatever you want...I just don't want bangs" and she chopped off 3/4 of my hair and it looked (and still looks) fabulous! After going to a stylist who refused to change my hair for years, it's refreshing to have someone who is willing to take risks along with me! Oh, and the scalp massage is very relaxing. :) read more

After much deliberation, I decided I couldn't make do with the current state of my hair. I was somewhat weary because Yelp has led me astray before with hair salons. Boy did I worry for nothing. When I called to make an appointment, I was able to get one within 5 hours, which really suprised me. I had my hair cut by Susan, who was absolutely FANTASTIC! I've had many a bad haircut and was somewhat skittish, but she was super patient and made sure that she factored in my preferences and needs. Was quiet but not in an uncomfortable way, so I found it really relaxing to sit there for almost two hours (I have A LOT of hair) and just chill. I'm absolutely thrilled with my hair cut, it looks 500% better and feels great. I really loved that she didn't try to push product after I told her that I don't use product on my hair at all. I was blown away that my haircut was only $50, Susan is a master! Will totally come back again. read more

It's not like this salon needs any more yelp stars, but I wanted to add more anyways, as I think they deserve it. I've been going to Pomp & Proper for over 3 years now (after a long search for a good hair salon in the city) and have been pretty happy with the results every single visit. From the stylists, I highly recommend Susan. She's absolutely great and has been the reason I go back every time! She listens to what I want and gives lasting, good cuts! I love it! I also recently got a haircut from Jen there, who I also recommend. (yes, I've cheated, but only because Susan was on mat leave) Jen carefully listened to what I wanted for my cut and gave me exactly what I asked for! They're both very sweet, attentive and definitely reliable stylists. Take my word for it! Also a little tip--an unwritten haircut rule--with every stylist no matter where you go, if you have a something in mind, it's good to have a reference picture to show them. ;) read more

I LOVE my new haircut by Flora, She also took the time to help me and explain how to style my own hair. I have never had this good of a service! I am VERY pleased with my haircut and style plus the service. I would say give this place a chance. I finally found my favourite salon :) read more

I moved to Vancouver and missed my stylist of 8 years from Ontario - I was so nervous to try a new place that I waited two years before my hair got so unruly it could be put off no longer. Jen at Pomp and Proper was so wonderful. She was running a bit late (hey it happens) but made up for it by grabbing me a coffee and apologizing afterwards. She listened to EVERYTHING I wanted. Not too short, no short bangs, I showed her a picture and we went with it. She also recommended products and styling tips after I admitted having no clue about anything but there was no pressure to buy anything - just sincere recommendations. I now have a stylist in Vancouver and won't wait 2 years (eek) before a haircut anymore :) read more

I went for years without a good salon, trying one place and then the next. I've had the stylist who leaned on my head while cutting my hair to the point where my neck hurt at the end. The chatty one who pays no attention to what they are doing to my head. The one that looks so bad you think, "How can this person possibly have a job trying to make me look good?" Then I found Pomp and Proper. They just do a good job, in a classy, understated way. One of my favorite words is elegant. To me, it means the beauty of simplicity, and I think that applies here. And hey... I always come away looking great! read more

I've been coming to Pomp and Proper for over a year now and Susan keeps me coming back:) She always does such a great job on my hair and may I include very thorough. Great service is what makes a person come back and Susan has all the makings of it, like the way she greets her clients and walks them to the door upon leaving. Might I mention that it varies whomever is at reception, but they are always very pleasant and genuine. You leave me smiling after I walk out the door, so thanks! read more

I am writing a review specifically about a perm that was done by Alicia. I am perfectly satisfied with the haircuts I've received from her in the past, but when I recently went to have a perm done, I was quite disappointed. I had been getting perms done since I was 12 years old, and have never had a problem with a perm waning and losing its curl. I have had several perms done with boxed dye in my hair, and even then the perm retained and I would have to grow it out and cut those layers off in order to go back to straight hair. I have had both traditional perms as well as digital perms, with varying sizes of rods and hair lengths. During my appointment Alicia kept the first application of chemicals on my hair for about 10-15 minutes, rinsed, then repeated with the neutralizing chemicals for another 15 minutes. I don't know if this is a new technique, or if this was done intentionally because I specified a "loose" curl look. After she dried my hair, my bangs were disappointingly straight, while one side of my head was sort of curly, and the other side of my head was wavy at best. In any case, I waited three days before washing my hair after the appointment, have since been using curl retaining styling products, shampoos, conditioners, and mousses, etc. Three weeks later, my hair is completely straight again and will not hold a style, even if I use a curling iron and hair spray. I would continue to go to Alicia for haircuts as there is no doubt she is skilled at that. But, I will go back to seeing an asian stylist who understands how to perm this fine, straight, asian-specific hair. This time it wasn't worth it for the price I paid. read more

Fantastic service, fantastic people. I've had the privilege of both working with, and being a client of the staff at Pomp & Proper. Highly recommended. read more

Just one word you need to know when going here for a cut: Shane. That's it. He is by far one of the best hair dressers I've ever had. Just one thing I'd like to see the owners do and that is to change your chairs! I leaned forward to get something from the counter in front of me and chair tipped over. I almost fell and banged my face on the counter. You guys need to bolt the chairs to the ground before a lawsuit comes to visit. read more

When I walked into the salon it had great vibe. Everyone seemed cheerful and kind. I booked an appointment with Susan after researching salons and stylists that are good with thick wavy hair. She did a nice job with my hair. Im picky and have high expectations. I appreciate stylists that take their time...and don't use the hair thinning razors and instead use the scissor method to cut my hair. The only con was the upselling as another user mentioned. I find it to be superficial - and you want to trust your stylist but when that happens you question it. I know in some salons the upselling is a required part of their job - so its not just Susan... But I could do without it! read more

I was very lucky to have lived a few blocks away from this place. Now that I've moved, I will travel far and wide to get my hair cut here (Ok, it should really only take me 20 min to get to Main and 12th, but you know what I mean :)). It was recommended to me by 2 people in the same day and I've gone on to recommend it to everyone I know. Whether their hair was long or short, curly or straight - they all thought it was great. Although all the stylists are fab, Alicia takes the cake. read more

Very Upsetting Experience I'm a very positive person and like to focus on the "good" in every experience. I must say however, that I have never had a worst hair cut in my adult life, than the one I got last week at Pomp & Pompus. It was my first and last time trying them out. First, I got a call from the stylist asking me to come a 1/2 hour later then my scheduled appointment. Okay, no problem. I understand. So I arrive on the time discussed, and proceed to wait an additional 30 min before the hair dresser even came around to say hello. There was another girl cutting hair right in front of me who completely ignored me, except to say in a snobby tone "take a seat" when I first arrived. No one even offering me a glass of water. My Time is Valuable! But hey. I undertood, we all have those days. Once I did get in the chair, she asked me what I wanted. I'm a male with short hair, and what I asked for was very simple....., Well, I never thought someone could mess up my hair that bad. She had to go so short in order to try and fix it that I might as well have shaved it. It's been a couple of weeks now, and I am still struggling with it. It will be another few weeks before it's long enough to even attempt to try and fix it with another hair dresser. I am still living with this terrible haircut as I write this review. At least I got to pay 45 bucks for it. So, to try and find the positive.... I've learned my lesson and will never go there again. I can help educate others to the dangers of going to Pomp & Proper. Don't make the mistake I did. read more

Five stars. I've been living in Van for almost 4 years and am so happy to have finally found my salon! I've gone to others only to be satisfied with the first cut - then sadly disappointed or upset with the second cut. Susan is amazing with my medium length fine (but not too fine) wavy hair. She talks to you about what is good for your hair, takes her time, is calm, easy going and cool. BUT she is serious about her work. Unlike other stylists who are just too laid back and dispassionate. I like what the over commenter said about the salon being not pretencious....true, but at the same time, has super cool people working there. Fair prices too. read more

This is a late review, but I wanted to note my experience.I had my appointment with Susan probably just 2 before she went of mat leave. She did a pretty good job on hair styling, it looked good, but it look like she was bored of cutting long layered hair, she didn't put a lot of effort to make a conversation as the other hair stylist I saw in the salon. I would probably try another hair stylist next time. Other than that the salon is were hip and stylish. read more

I have been going to Alicia at Pomp and Proper for several years, and she is absolutely amazing! She is fantastic at cutting curly hair, and this is very difficult. I have been to stylists in New York City, San Francisco, and other big cities, and she is up there with the best haircuts I have ever had. She is great at recommending styles that will look good on you too. And she is fantastic at highlights and colour: I never coloured my hair as I was always afraid of what it would look like, but she made it easy and it looks incredibly natural. I would highly recommend Alicia, she is fantastic! read more

I love Susan. I went in there with a too dark picture and a vague idea of what I wanted and she spent not one, but two hours taking my hair from long-boring-dreckitude to cute-bouncy-short-fabulousness. Two hours she spent making me perfect! And she massaged my scalp. And she talks enough that it's not uncomfortably silent but shuts up when there's nothing more to chit-chat about. I am really really going to miss here when I eventually move. I might have to come back just for haircuts. read more

Skilled hairdressers. The experience is nice enough. Be ready for a stiff bill though.

This salon is close to home for me so I decided to try it out. I had a cut with Susan. She listened to my concerns and offered suggestions until we agreed on a length and style. I haven't stopped getting complements on my hair since. The salon is small and has a cozy vibe, treatments are reasonably priced, as are cuts. I will definitely be back. Thanks Susan! read more

I was strolling up main with friends and needed a haircut. Stumbled in this salon. Jasmin cut my hair and she was a total pro. Great cut and good vibes in the salon. Highly recommended. read more

I used to go to pomp and proper all of the time. I would come about every 8-12 weeks to get a cut and colour. I came for about a year and a half. I saw Susan who always did a really great job. She paid great attention to detail and always took her time- I never felt rushed. One time, however, the colour just didn't turn out so great. It happens. No big deal. I called the salon to arrange to get it fixed. They offered me two times, neither which worked. Susan was also leaving for a week, and by the time she got back, I would be leaving for vacation for 3 weeks, so I asked if someone else would be able to fix it, as Susan and my schedule was just not lining up. They said no- that the stylist who did it has to fix it. While I understand that, this seemed to be impossible, as we were both going away and our schedules wouldn't line up for at least 6 weeks. Even after the explaining this, the salon did nothing to help remedy the situation. They wouldn't let me see another stylist without paying, and they wouldn't offer me a discount on future services. I never went back. It wasn't my first time there, I had been going consistently for over a year, I had never once complained, and you can't do ANYTHING to help accommodate a simple situation? Such a shame. Anyway, if you do go, Susan is a fantastic stylist. But I have to give 3 stars for terrible customer service! read more

This was my first (and last) time at Pomp and Proper. The cut and colour were fine, but I'm giving the salon low marks for up-selling me and causing me to spend the most money I've ever spent in a hair salon. After reading all the great reviews, I decided to give it a try. When it turned out Alicia had gone somewhere else, I made an appointment with Susan. She's a good stylist and friendly, and I didn't dislike the cut or colour. It didn't blow me away, or make me want to switch from my old stylist. It was decent. But she advised me that my hair could use extra conditioning for $20 extra, so I agreed. I thought it was going to be a special treatment that would require an extra rich conditioner to be left in my hair for 15 minutes or so. But all she did was put conditioner in my hair and leave it on for a minute or so. Then, when I was paying, she tried to sell me the products she'd used (I hate that sort of sales tactic), and it turned out the "special" conditioner was $34. I could have purchased the whole bottle and used several applications. Including the tip, I paid about $260 for a cut and highlights. I have chin length hair. My usual stylist charges me $180 including tip. Hair cut/colour is expensive enough. As a customer, I don't appreciate the old-fashioned up-sell so my stylist can make a few extra bucks off me. read more

I always check yelp when trying out new salons, and booked a haircut with Alicia since there were so many recommendations. I have been to other salons that yelpers have liked and was left feeling disappointed so I tried not to get my hopes up as I went. Well, Alicia is amazing. It was easily, by far the best haircut I've gotten in my entire life. When I saw her, I was a bit uneasy bc she looks kind of ..80s? I'm not sure, but more out there than my style, but she seriously listens to what you want, talks about options, and she even spent a lot of time teaching me how to style my hair at home in detail, something other stylists just gloss over. With other stylists I've had, they would just say oh blowdry it this way. But Alicia took the time to show me how to do it step by step, and gave me other styling options too. When cutting my hair, I could tell that she was being far more precise than other stylists I've seen, and took the time to make sure that everything was right and that I liked it. Not to mention, she is very nice and easy to talk to, so it's impossible not to recommend her! Unfortunately I have very strong long hair so I don't need haircuts very often, but when I do, I know I'll return for sure. read more

I had a 10am haircut also, i basically ended up with a trim, something i would have expected for a third of the price. The whole experience was over in less than 40 minutes, i do not hate my haircut but it was definitely a slight trim and certainly not worth the price of $60, very rushed, not a lot of chat. Also an offer of a coffee would have been nice, i saw many other clients with drinks. meh, I will not be back. read more

unreal. i get charged over 200 dollars for a simple cut and a few colour streaks on one side... its an aweful job to say the least and overpriced i tried talking to the manager and they never really got back to me with a solution or a refund. i even settled for a wash and style! but they might screw that up too read more

Jessy is a really good stylist. She is easy to talk to, listens to what you have to say and then gives you great options for your hair. She invested time and care in to my haircut explaining exactly what she was doing. Moreover, she gave me great styling tips. To me that's super important because you want to keep your hair looking good! I liked the relaxed atmosphere (I have a strong aversion to highty flighty gossipy hair salons) at Pomp and Proper. I certainly found a good hair stylist in Jessy at Pomp and Proper. Will be back again! :) read more

I had recently come back to this salon after a hiatus (nothing to do with this salon) and immediately remembered why this place is amazing. Susan is amazing and she has a natural art at making the simple things look easy. Believe me, the others I've been to don't have this the way she does. Also I really appreciate that they discuss PRICES with you before they get started. Informed consent, they're not trying to hide their work or pricing. Last but not least, the salon has really great product to purchase. Not just one brand, rather a selection and not too bad pricing either. read more

I have very thick, wavy hair and had a cut from Susan Lee on a recommendation from a friend who also had thick, wavy hair. Considering I had no specifications for her other than that I needed low maintenance, she did a great job. She was extremely precise, really getting the layers and angles just right. The cut for my chin-length hair took about an hour, which is great, considering it's the same price as my last Yaletown haircut, which took all of 20 minutes and looked hideous. I also liked how she focused on the cut rather than making small talk. She is a great stylist and I don't think there is any cut she couldn't do. She put far more time into her cuts than some other stylists I saw there. Speaking of...my boyfriend had Shane cut his hair at the same time, and the cut is very clean, but he didn't give my boyfriend any sort of massage or pampering, took about a third the time to cut his hair, and cut it shorter than requested, all for the same price as my cut. I will get Susan to cut my boyfriend's hair next time and I'll definitely be going back for my trims now that I've found a reliable stylist. read more

This review isn't for me. My daughter and I used to go to Chasty at AXIS, but she moved away to California to pursue her acting career. Ever since, we were going to different places. I decided, after many unsatisfactory experiences to try the best reviewed placed on yelp. For myself, I went to a barber shop, and I am extremely pleased. For my daughter, we booked with Susan, and she is very pleased. Looks like we're going back to Susan for her. I will be sticking with Nick's Barber Shop. $12+tips at Nick's. You cannot find better value, or at least I haven't found the combination of price and high level of craftsmanship. Susan at Pomp and Proper obviouly pleased my daughter, to the extent that she wants to return here. The last place, another AXIS stylist, was not at all satisfactory. Cost more, but inferior skill. We miss Chasty, who was the best in Vancouver, as far as we're concerned. read more

I got highlights and a cut done at Pomp and Proper and I wasnt' very happy with the hair cut I got. I even tried to go back and fix it with the same person and I was still not 100% satisfied. It was an okay cut, but curly hair can be tricky and the way it was cut didn't make me completely happy. I didnt' want to give up on Pomp and Proper because of the great reviews and because they seemed to be a very professional hair salon, so I asked if I could see another hair stylist that is great with curly hair, and that's when I met Jenn, not even 3 weeks from my first visit. I can't believe how great she made my hair look! She did some tweaks and a basic clean up, but you can tell she knows very well what she is doing !!! And, on top of that, she didn't charge me anything for the work she had to do on my hair, even though I had come at first to see another stylist before! How professional is that ? Thank you SO much, Jenn ! You are great and I love what you did on my hair ! I will definitely be back ! :D :D Highly recommend Pomp and Proper!!! read more
