So many wonderful features here: -free parking in two lots (that would NEVER happen in Vancouver) -a walk around the pond involves a flat trail, one foot bridge, and one stretch of boardwalk through a marshy patch -you never know what wild birds you might see and/or hear here (we saw a heron in the pond, and I heard the call of loons! For real!) -there is a lovely canopy of trees over the walking trail (which was very welcome, on the hot day I visited), and plenty of benches to relax along the way -there are areas of grassy meadow lands on small hills in areas by the walking trail, perfect for a picnic or throwing a frisbee on a nice day -my Toronto friend says sometimes she's seen people fishing in the pond! What a great, little oasis right in the city!

I was always able to take public transit there or get my parents to drive me. It's a large park to have a stroll, picnic or to play in the playground. It was a lot of fun being there. I would be surprised and forget how big it was just cause I didn't always have the opportunity to explore the park. Also, I remember a time where people were able to fly kites till it was banned. I don't know if they still do fireworks. For a time, the park would arrange fireworks on Canada Day and a lot of people would attend. During events like this, people would park at the Alton Towers plaza, walked or transit there because parking was limited. Local high school students would do their volunteer hours at the community center on the park. I think they need to apply online through the main city website (if memory serves me correctly).

The water park is really lackluster, no one uses it. The gazebo is regularly occupied in the morning by Asian grannies doing tai chi. A sight to behold. The south has a baseball field, a larger playground, a skatepark, a basketball court, two more tennis courts, and another soccer field. This half is often bustling with activity, especially in the summer. The place looks right proper and is well-maintained by the staff. The pond is a nice touch that is surrounded by the verdant fields. If you haven't come to this place for a little walk, give it a try. Just look out for the geese.

It doesn't have a lot of parking spaces and if you arrive early, you will be lucky to find an empty spot. Even then, you have to pay at least an hour parking fee to park there; which I believe maybe 1/2 hour would be enough for a small park. There is a paved walkway along the waterfront and you can enjoy the nice scenery during your walks. You also can use the designated area to load your canoe, or you can go to the canoe club and rent one. The washrooms are now closed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The parking lot here isn't huge so it can get busy but if you are able to find parking in one of the nearby streets and stroll down, you are in for a real treat. There is always wild life to observe and pedestrian friendly path that will make you want to keep on walking! A bridge at the end of the parking lot will take you over to the Pickering side where the waterfront trail continues well into the Durham region with expansive waterview most of the way. Definitely a great place to visit for some quiet time!

The trail is somewhat circular, and can vary from 2-3 km depending on where you walk. The trails are pretty easy and flat. The trails on the north side of the park pass by residential back yards and are primarily dirt trails, which can get muddy after a rain. You also pass by some nice brick houses on the west side of the park. Overall, a pretty nice walk if you're looking for something easy and don't want to break a sweat.

As to why it is called "Red Park", the only thing I can think of is that they hold the annual Strawberry Festival there, during the Canada Day long weekend. I was at that festival in 2022. The neighbouring streets were closed each time I've been there, but I've only been there twice, so don't take my work for it. There is no free WiFi. It is not wheelchair accessible.
