Went here for the first time earlier, and was greeted with the friendliest GP I've ever come across. She sat down beside me and just listened, then chatted with me as if she were a friend, offered solid advice and many options to suit me, and was even eager to save me money on a few things. Besides this, when I arrived in the centre, I had to wait a max of 3-4 minutes before being seen. The place is smack bang in the middle of Smithfield, so really easy access-wise, and it's pretty brand new, so nice and bright, airy and clean looking. Overall, my visit gave me full confidence in their abilities, something I'd very rarely say about any visit to a GP centre!

And as they do not answer their phone after 5pm, that's pretty much all the info you have to go on. I legged it across town at rush hour, to arrive at 6.05pm (thinking I still have plenty of time) only to be told that nobody gets seen by a doctor after 6pm. And there doesn't seem to be any way of contacting a manager. When I asked for details, I was told that contacting the manager was just not possible. Place was bleak, grey...the beleaguered receptionist seemed like she was manning a kind of half-sunk ship. My advice? Doctors are expensive. Find one that gives a toss. Major, MAJOR thumbs down.

Absorbing the second floor of a building just off of Grafton Street's thoroughfare, the medical centre is divided into two areas: regular visits and patients travelling abroad. The rotating staff of very capable GPs are, while fast, working hard to treat you completely. My first visit was with Dr. Emer O'Reilly a great doctor with a brilliant personality. She advised me on my perscriptions, gave me a check up, then sat down to discuss my overall health and well being. Lovely! As for costs there are no bargains to be had, unfortunately. An average appointment will run you €60 -about the same as most Dublin doctors. But, for the money there is a fantastic resource here. I've made sure to recommend this place (and this doctor) to visiting and local friends who may be feeling under the weather and I'm delighted to do the same for you.

And…read morewell I did something to my big toe, and after suffering for a bit it occurred to me that the frozen peas might not be the medical experts i took them for. Anyway I had previously noticed this new(ish) walk in Dr's surgery, which I thought I could use. Mostly I use the college doc but it was too far to hobble. So off I hobbled to this surgery with its odd, but actually quite convenient opening hours. The reception area is a bit off-putting. There is no receptionist... but there is CCTV and it's assumed that the waiters will organise themselves in the order in which they came into the holding area (it honestly felt more like a holding area than a waiting room). With the austere surroundings I though the doctors would not be nice, but actually the doctor I met with was really lovely and quite sympathetic to my dislocated (as it turns out) toe. The price of the visit was pretty high too, higher than my own GP by a bit. All in all the place was handy in my hobbling 'emergency' but I wouldn't like to go their regularly... it's bad enough feeling sick without going somewhere that makes you feel like you've also committed a crime. Her english is not the best and when this was explained over the phone the receptionist told us they do not take patients who don't speak English and they do not use google translate. They refused to make her an appointment due to her not being able to speak English well over the phone. The colleague who called speaks perfect English and French and could have easily gone to the appointment with her to help translate but the receptionist did not even attempt to make this option available. I am not sure if this is a racist policy of the GP or practice, or if the receptionist is just particularly bitter but this should not have happened regardless. This is not only illegal but very disappointing as health care should be accessible to all, and the HSE will provide translators if needed. Dublin thrives because of tourism, so to expect everyone to speak English to receive health care is unfair and unrealistic.

I went to the Rafters for 3 years first to Dr Yvonne Rafter who showed absolutely no signs of any interest in my presence or of being a GP. Then to Dr Dermot Rafter. Though he was more compassionate or caring, I had a bad experience when I went in for travel vaccinations. You'd think when your GP advertises that they provide these vaccinations they would know what you need. Imagine my surprise when he started consulting a chart and then the Internet (right there in front of me!). On one of my followups he didn't even have the vaccination required! If this wasn't bad enough, the vaccinations ended up costing over 100 euro more than what was quoted in the beginning. This was the final straw for me and I have not been back since. When you're paying a premium, as I did in the Rafter office, you would expect the doctor to at least have done his homework before you arrive. For this reason, I must give a bad review.

Over the years the doctors working there have changed and I usually seem to get a different doctor each time a make an appointment. I can understand that they are a busy clinic, but it would be handy to see the same doctor so you don't have to explain things multiple times or have them stare at the computer trying to figure out your medical history. On a good day I only wait 5-10 mins from my appointed time, but on a really bad day it can go up to 30mins. The clinic itself is very clean and big, has BBC on the tv and it's not too hard to make an appointment with the exception of December~ January. They do travel health and immunisations as well at a cheaper rate than places like Tropical Medical Bureau but are only open until 5:30pm. Overall, nice clinic, efficient service and professional staff.
