I stopped by Unick Eat'z to get hubby the Queso Brisket Fries because that's how hubby rolls. Jaylen suggested I get the SMH Burger. What? ‍ The Shake My Head Burger. Ok, let's go for it and I'm so glad I did. First I noticed how this was doubled wrapped in foil and I will let you know why. It helps keep all the layers together, while you eat, so the burger won't fall apart. Eat the burger and unwrap a bite at a time. Smart. This burger was prepared so well there never was a mess. The first layer is a well seasoned, good quality burger, next a layer of brisket (I suggest a little bbq sauce on top of that). Then there is a layer of thick, crispy (not greasy) bacon. Then a fried egg, followed by crisp lettuce and tomatoes. For the finale, it is topped off with sliced FRIED pickles and jalapeños. OMG, those fried pickles sent that burger up some notches. I loved it. What stood out most was 1) the good quality of the hamburger meat 2) no part of my burger was greasy 3) each layer was portioned well 4) even with all the layers the burger bun held up. It was that good. The concept, organization and presentation is genius. If you have never been to Unick Eat'z please check them out. We passed all kinds of fast-bbq chains but found this singular joint via fellow Yelpers. Yay! We ordered a pulled pork sandwich and the ribs and sausage entree. In hindsight I should have (always do) requested light sauce or on the side because all too often (as was the case here) it is sugary and dripping in excess. The pulled pork was 5-stars despite being soaked in bbq sauce. The surprising part was there was easily 1/2 lb of meat between the little round buns. The sausages were equally incredible... homemade and you could tell because the large casings were nearly impossible to bite through but inside was a lightly packed crumble of outstanding meat and spices. We ended up just sliding or squeezing the ground meat out of the two casings. Fortunately, no bbq sauce inside the casing so the meat was able to sing on its own. The lone disappointment were the ribs - there were only 4 and they were not especially warm nor tender. I was expecting fall-off-the-bone and these resembled ribs that had cooked for 2-3 hours but needed another 2 hours to be "done." You order at the window and there's an outdoor/covered picnic-like room about 40 feet away. There is no indoor seating. While flies can get into that open room (no door) it wasn't annoying at this time of year. Parking is easy in their private lot and everything was nicely packaged since every order is essentially to-go.

When you're going somewhere for BBQ, that smoky wood-fired aroma is one of the first things you expect. Unfortunately, there was no smell of smoke, and after tasting the food, it all started to make sense. The food was extremely disappointing. Everything was covered in an excessive amount of BBQ sauce, to the point where it was difficult to taste the actual meat. The ribs were tough. The brisket was also tough, had no smoke ring, and lacked that deep, smoky flavor you expect from properly smoked brisket. The pork bones tasted more like boiled meat than smoked BBQ. At that point, we started wondering if the sauce was being used to cover up the lack of smoke and flavor in the meat. My sister-in-law said the best thing we had was the Kool-Aid--and honestly, she wasn't wrong. I spent $128.88 on this meal, and I honestly feel like I spent $128.88 on trash. That's a lot of money to spend on food that was this disappointing. We drove to Beaumont expecting some good BBQ, but instead we got tough meat drowning in BBQ sauce with very little smoke flavor. BBQ is supposed to be about the meat, the smoke, the seasoning, and the time it takes to cook it right. Unfortunately, none of that came through in this meal. Needless to say, this was our first and last visit. For $128.88, I expected a meal worth talking about. Instead, the Kool-Aid was the highlight of the entire experience.
