The Pollok Park is fantastic. There is no other way to describe it. Driving into the Pollok Park is like stepping back in time - it really is brilliant. Wide open green spaces, cosy little corners, lovely scenery and walks, it has everything. This really is the best park in Glasgow and one of the biggest green spaces in Europe. When I was younger I used to moan that there was no play park in the Pollok Park, but this has been resolved now with swings and roundabouts near the Burrell Collection. The Burrell Collection deserves an entry all of itself. It is a world class art collection hidden away in the middle of a park hidden away in the south side of Glasgow. And it's free! One of the best parts of the Pollok Park are the allotments. There is a real sense of community here. The open day in September, where everyone displays their proudest vegetables is a real treat. I bought a copy Blade Runner on video at the little jumble sale here for a pound. Amazing! There are plans afoot to build some kind of monkey swinging experience in the park, but this has caused local outrage and will hopefully not happen - it would perhaps be a bit crass to have something so commercial in one of Glasgow's great treasures.

It was a nice enough day on Saturday there, so me and the other half decided to go and do something with our rare free afternoon off. I don't regret the effort in going here, as it was a lovely lovely place. I forgot I was in Glasgow for a few hours. I could have been anywhere in the UK. It's so much bigger than I could have imagined, letting out a faint chuckle when I checked out where I was on one of the maps. There are cute Highland Cows that instantly made me want Highland Toffee, with some genuinely lush green open spaces to sharpen your senses. The Burrell Collection was an enjoyable experience and the wee trip gave me a kick overall to perhaps start getting out my bed earlier and seeing the many sights and sounds Glasgow has to offer that I didn't know about. And that, Yelp, is where you come in! I will be going back summertime when I can take my bike. It was still a bit frosty on Sat for my liking.

A perhaps lesser known, or at least used, aspect of Pollok Country Park are its good selection of woodland trails and riverside walks. These weave and wind throughout the park and are accessible from all ends/sides. Thus, you do not need to go out of your way in order to start at certain points or to come across particular sections of the trails/walks that are of interest. In fact, many of the trails and walks are specifically designed in order to deliberately take their users through, or to, places of interest (e.g. the Burrell Collection). This means that even the dolliest person is likely to witness something note worthy on any trail or walk. The mixture of routines also means that those who prefer a stroll following the White Cart river can do so while also enjoying passing Pollok House, the bridges that go over the White Cart and the golf course amongst other things. The other two major bonuses of these are also that they are 1) FREE and 2) this is the perfect time of year to take advantage of this. It's warm, but not too warm. It's surprisingly dry. It's reasonably quiet (due to the majority of folks being at work/school/college etc) and there are even some daffodils out.

This is one of my favorite parks to visit when I am in town. The Highland cattle are my favorite and the gardens are absolutely beautiful. We also saw the horses this time which I had not seen previously. Such a beautiful place to spend a hard to come by sunny afternoon in Glasgow.

I love Pollok Park and have been a regular visitor for many years. One of many green spaces in Glasgow but more wooded and wilder than many it is a favourite venue for joggers, cyclists and dog walkers and full of free attractions. Pollok House, currently under scaffolding, is a beautiful pocket-sized mansion. Run by the National Trust for Scotland on behalf of Glasgow City Council, entry is free between November and April and even outside these months you can access the beautiful entrance hall and lower corridor (life below stairs) to visit the loo and the tearoom/restaurant for free. Get to the Burrell Collection quickly (before October 2016) before it closes for several years to repair and refurbish this stunning piece of modern architecture. One man's lifetime of collecting art and antiquities, the collection was gifted to the people of Glasgow and features everything from ancient Egyptian and Greek artefacts through Chinese and medieval art objects to an internationally important collection of 19th and early 20th century European art. There are miles of wild woodland walks, you might even be lucky and spot a couple of deer, and acres of gardens to explore. The stable yard behind Pollok House is home to Glasgow's heavy horses who can sometimes also be seen posing picturesquely on the bank of the river Cart beside the 18th century bridge. There are even a couple of archaeological sites, see if you can spot the iron age earthwork enclosure in the woods just off the path to your left as you pass the pond on your right. For children there's a play park near the Burrell and a rangers' centre at the stable yard (wee beastie hunts and the like often on offer) as well as the freedom to run about. On occasion ( eg Christmas) there are horse-drawn cart rides. Incidentally the park is also home to a woodland nursery (children that is not plants). There are a number of display boards around the park with information about the wildlife and plant life. For an alternative approach to the park walk past the station (on your right) and go up the track past the bowling green. The path winds its way through fields and greenery that could be miles and miles away in the country, the only clue to being in Glasgow is the faint hum of traffic in the distance. It eventually brings you over the stone bridge over the Cart and a beautiful view of the rear of Pollok House. The big stars of the park are Glasgow's own 'fold' of highland cattle.

Facilities wise, there's a couple of adventure playgrounds, a large equestrian centre, and a golf course, which in all honesty isn't very much for a park of this size, but it's main attraction is the woodland walks. There are large chunks of forest in the park, waterfalls and a good few picturesque little bridges over the river, so it's a very relaxing and peaceful place for a stroll. We got caught in a thunderstorm on our last visit here which is probably a negative but it did provide a bit of excitement. There's also an old mansion in the park which was derelict and thus wonderfully spooky until recently, but it's since been done up and turned into admittedly impressive houses. The Snuff Mill Bridge walkway just at the edge of the park is in my opinion one of the nicest spots in Glasgow. Hardly anyone has heard of it yet I was quite taken aback when I first stumbled upon it. On a nice day it can genuinely feel like you're in a quaint little English village, there's even old Victorian-style street lighting.

I tend to make the pilgrimage during the summer- when I can find someone with a car to carry the picnic stuff- and sit out in the open field for a lovely, restful afternoon. The lack of facilities is what has made it so peaceful- the golf course, I am glad to say, is under-nourished.

For me, Rouken Glen is also very special, it's where I used to feed the ducks when I was little, I learned how to ride my Bluebird bike here, I enjoyed eating ice-creams here with my family in summer and making a wish by throwing pennies into the waterfall with my dad. Rouken Glen is a beautiful park and there is so much to do here, especially if you have a young family. If you're a nature lover then it's great to come here for a walk and listen to the birds tweeting. When I came here last summer I was glad to see that it's still as popular as ever, we even took the paddle boats out and I enjoyed being captain for the day as G-Bot is useless at rowing. I also took a lot of flyers from the park rangers office, that encouraged people to be more environmental and bring out the hippie in you. This year I plan to take part in some of the activities in these flyers, such as going on an ancient tree hunt, joining the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, taking part in National Insect Week by going on a bug hunt, who knows I might even find Bugtropolis. What better place to do all of these things than at Rouken Glen? If all that nature tires you out then there's a little cafe beside the pond to sit and recharge your batteries.

I guess I'm spoiled by Rouken Glen, but Newlands is just as lovely and well worth a visit. It's quite small but really lovely, a bit of a hidden oasis off Kilmarnock Road. I was there to visit the new Dandelion Cafe at the tennis court pavilion (check out my review for that separately) but took the chance after eating to have a bit of a wander.
