I've been eagerly anticipating the opening of this new Pollo Campero location. Having first tasted the chicken in its native Guatemala, I was a bit hesitant it wouldn't live up to my memories. Thankfully, I was wrong--the flavor is amazing and immediately took me back. The sides were mostly fantastic. The yuca fries are a must-try, and the rice is perfectly fluffy and authentic. My only disappointments were that the tortillas didn't seem to be made fresh in-house and they had run out of plantains, which I was really looking forward to. I did have a long wait in the drive-thru (about 25 minutes), but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt since it seemed to be a grand opening day. This location is relatively new, they have only been open for a year and a half. It is very large, and very clean. Comfortable chairs with plenty of tables and booths for eating inside. I had the 2-piece white fried chicken meal with cole slaw, a dinner roll, and a mango drink. The chicken is juicy, make sure you have your napkin ready. Great tasting chicken, there's enough food in the 2-piece meal to fill you up at a very reasonable price. This location is very large and can accommodate a lot of people. There are plenty of comfortable chairs and tables, as well as booths. I had the two piece dark fried chicken meal with sweet plantains and a dinner roll. Very friendly bilingual staff easily welcoming customers at the front counter. I had the pleasure of meeting Patricia. Despite it being my first time here the menu was easy to follow. They offer both white and dark pieces of chicken when you order the multiple pieces combos. Sodas, fruit drinks or horchata are all the same price. The skin of the chicken was very crispy and the meat was incredibly juicy. It was perfectly cooked. The nuggets are a bit on the pricer side, but they are meaty compared to the typical fast food nuggets. The campero sauce surprise me with its sweet, tangy, and hint of pickle. If you order to eat there they will bring out the food to your table. I'm glad im don't live terribly far from this place as I'll probably be back. Interior is very modern and simple. Yes costs have gone up everywhere but the lack of specials/deals at such a new location is a problem. They were completely empty but we were pushed to buy their fried chicken instead of their signature grilled, the item we were most interested in. Well the chicken was ok it was over fried and basic. The pieces were hard and tough to chew. We got yuca fries and plantains for sides. The yuca was the most underwhelming yuca I have ever ate. No taste or texture that made them stand out and like the chicken they were hard. The stand out item was the plantains, perfectly cooked with the texture that comes from experience in cooking them. The fried chicken is better than the grilled chicken. The grilled chicken tastes too much like mojo marinade. My husband says their chicken sandwich is even better than the fried chicken. I decided to order again a year later from my last review and the service is terrible. I ordered online at 7:22 and pick up was set for 7:38 pm. We noticed they took down the horchata, Jamaica, and mango Fresca juices and hid them in the back, I thought this was ridiculous because it was still early and I really wanted the mango drink. We noticed they told every customer they didn't have the drinks but I knew that was a lie. Once we finally got our order the employee whispered to wait for our drinks and they secretly got the mango Fresca from the back. So that was a lie because they had it. My fiancé and I were hungry so we sat down to eat and I took one bite out of my nugget and it was still frozen cold! They also messed up my fiancé's order and gave him yuca fries instead of rice. We brought this to their attention and they looked at us like we were crazy so I showed the employee my digital receipt and she demanded the paper receipt on the bag which showed the same thing as the digital receipt. Once that happened, they pulled out the rice from the back and chicken nuggets that were cooked right. I don't understand why they didn't just give us the right order in the first place. The employees looked clueless and were moving super slow. My yucca fries didn't taste freshly fried and were stale and cold as well. We waited there a long time for our food just for all of it to be cold and not correct. I'd highly suggest to keep the Fresca juices out till closed because so many customers were lied to. Thankfully I ordered online and got the mango Fresca although it wasn't even cold anymore. Please properly train your employees. Service needs to improve. I also noticed the employee who gave my mother and I an attitude last year is still the same female employee working the front and taking orders. There's just something about her vibe that comes off super fake and not pleasant at all. The wait time for food is ridiculously toooooooooo long and so many customers looked so tired and bored waiting for as long as we did. The service is too slow and it's ran by a bunch of people who look like they have no urgency to do their job or even know what they are doing. This location is located at the end of a strip mall. I walked in and was greeted immediately by the cashier. I placed my order to eat in the dining room that was quickly filling up. This location had a home feeling. Families eating together and having a good peaceful meal. I decided to have the mango drink that was so smooth and tasty. I sat at a small table and my order was already coming out. The server handed me a nicely plated meal with a perfectly cooked breast and wing, crispy fries and a soft roll. I like having Pollo Campero near our home. I cook a lot of chicken at home, so I don't often order chicken when out, but Pollo Campero is a favorite when fried chicken is on the menu. I have a friend who often visits for the weekend to craft, and she is a somewhat selective eater. I ordered a chicken sandwich and a two piece chicken meal with an extra side. I asked if I could get mayo on the chicken sandwich. I was told the sandwich does not come with anything except pickles, so no, I could not get mayo. My two sides were cole slaw and mac & cheese. They tasted terrible, they had a terrible after taste to it. The chicken looked like it had been sitting there for a whole day, and it was not tasty at all. What happened to Pollo Campero? They use to have multiple locations in the Chicagoland area. Now the only one I could find is in the corner shopping center by Lawerence & Pulaski Avenue. They do have locations in other states in the US & Central America w/it's origins in Guatemala. I found the chicken to be very mediocre. (Maybe that why they're gone?) I posted a really good review of this restaurant 4 months ago. My how things have changed. I came here for more good chicken Sunday night and was I dissatisfied. Not only was the chicken overcooked and hard but it was very salty. And the pieces were also very small and they only had legs and thighs for the same price as wings and breast! WOW, can you imagine that? Well the experience got worse than that, I also didn't get my yuka fries that I paid for; I also ordered the beans well I must have gotten the last corner of beans because there was more soup than beans. I'm not done... I ordered mashed potatoes because there was no fries and the mashed potatoes were supposed to come with gravy. Again I must have gotten the last of the gravy too, because again only a teaspoon of gravy was put over my potatoes. Could it get much worse? As I was leaving I didn't get my large soda so I asked the guy at the counter can I get my soda? He looked at my ticket to verify I bought it and you know what he did then? He got a cup and put the inside of his gloved hand inside, after handling other stuff behind the counter! What in the world is going on today where service is so bad? So, I'm very disappointed in this restaurant today, I don't know if I'll go back now and I gave this place such a great review the first time. I was honest about it too. But I can't say the same thing about it now. I'm very disappointed by this. Oooh, and the chicken nuggets I don't know how to describe them they were very tiny I was buying them for my 16 yr old.
