We were here early afternoon, so things were relatively quiet, vs. an more boisterous and crowded evening pub atmosphere. There's 3 rooms (including the one with the bar) downstairs and an upstairs, with the local Hobart Brewing Company running this historical establishment. It looks like they have some work ahead of them in terms of upkeep of this elderly building, but the food, clientele, and atmosphere all fit together well.

We didn't have a reservation and the wait was going to be about 45 minutes or more, so luckily we were able to find a couple of open spots at a table in the bar area, where you order at the bar and the food is delivered to your table. It worked great! - There are a lot of great beers on tap, including several from Hobart Brewing Company. - Based on prior reviews, my wife and I ordered the Fish and Chips and the Seafood Chowder to split both dishes between us. The Fish and Chips were excellent, not overly breaded and the fish was perfectly cooked, very juicy. And, it came with a little salad. The Seafood Chowder was really good, including the bread that came with it. - The vibe inside is really fun, just a bit loud as you would expect a pub to be. Bottom line: We're glad we spent our first night at the Hope and Anchor Tavern.

In the end we managed to get an Irish pub in the city. When we turned up, it was a case of taking a look, shuddering and going 'Great. What now?' Thankfully, one of us had the temerity to ask the staff there where there was something a bit... Nicer. They recommended the Pumphouse just up the road. We walked up and to our delight, found a really nice, clean hospitable environment with a spacious aesthetic. Sitting next to the window we ordered some drinks. I ordered a mojito (a fond favourite from my time in Northern Italy) and it was quite nice, slightly too sweet for me but from my experiences with mojitos, it was a good one. I just don't have a sweet tooth so I prefer the more limey ones as opposed to the more sugary ones. Only a minor quibble. We then started ordering our dinner. I decided on the wallaby porterhouse (medium rare) with chimi churri and pangrattato ($17) and a side smashed potatoes with herb salt. ($9) It was amazing but the very small serve of wallaby was not great value for $17. When you say 'porterhouse', you usually think of a nice thick steaky chunk of meat not a half palm slice of meat. The flavours were just right and the aoili-style condiment with the meat went down very nicely with the smashed potatoes which were (I suspect) double fried to perfection. Golden, crunchy exterior with a lovely soft buttery inside. The only reason it didn't deserve a five star review in my opinion was the meat came alone. If it was a super-posh place that serves each dish alone, well, fine, be all wanky and all that but this was just an upper-class pub. The bar and the restaurant have their own menu. I was previously warned the bar has a nicer ambiance than the restaurant, but the restaurant menu is better than the bar. Whether it is the norm or not in Hobart restaurants, bread is not complimentary. Because I planned to have dessert, I chose not to order the bread or any sides to ensure room. For my main entree, the wallaby roast caught my attention. As it was my first time, I did not realize the meat would be a bit tough rather than being tender. The horseradish buttermilk accompanied the wallaby meat very well. Rather than being very pungent, the sauce only had the horseradish taste. When I was given this recommendation, I was under the impression there was one chocolate dessert. Unfortunately, there appears to be two, the Frogmore Cigar and the Snickers. My waitress considered the latter the restaurant's chocolate dessert because of the hot chocolate sauce poured over the peanut butter parfait. If this wasn't the chocolate dessert which I had been recommended, it is a very close second.

We were staying just above the wharf and spent about 20 minutes walking over. They had a great array of crusty, sweet and savory pastries, pies, and breakfast items. Perhaps the most impressive thing was the fact that their list of specials took up an entire chalkboard. Everything from sweet rolls too, wallaby and rabbit, pie, to some delicious eggs Benedict and a big English breakfast. They had something for everybody, and everything was really good! The place is housed in a relatively old building with a lot of character! Not so old that you're worried that you would find petrified things in the wall, but old enough that you definitely know the place has had a chance to fall over and won't. The staff was really nice, took great care of us and found us seats very quickly, despite the place being busy. All in all, this is a must check out spot whenever you are in town!

They've started…read morerunning tea society group tea sessions, and last Friday was a brilliant in-store breakfast for the launch of their new Hobart Breakfast tea. Everyone was very excited about tea. Today when I went in, their ambassador came over to help me out with a couple of questions and then noted that she'd missed me at their first tea society session. It was creepy (as we've not really been properly introduced) but also flattering (because I love feeling like a regular). I can't wait to get along to their next tea society session, and I'll be sure not to miss it next time! Current favourite teas (including but not limited to): Hobart Breakfast, White White Cocoa, Southern Sunrise, Red Choc Mint, Monk Pear and Gone Surfing. Oh yeah.

She was just reaching to take a tea to the counter when a staff member plonked a ladder right in front of her to get another customers tea. When she got to the counter with her tea the staff completely ignored her until she had to point herself out. I do, however, love their Hobart Breakfast and all their teas are wonderful.
