We enjoyed a birthday celebration a La Vaca last weekend. We liked the phone call asking us to come…read morea bit later than our booking, it gave us more time to wander through the sunny streets of Sheffield ... Sunny?! Oh my, at last, Summer might have arrived! All the meat from the grill was delicious..hot and smoky. Ribs were a great way to start the meal alongside excellent chips, a stuffed red pepper on the side and creamy coleslaw. All delicious. The rib eye was the best choice with the rump disappointingly being on the wrong side of tough.... Too full for dessert but perfectly happy we left La Vaca in search of a late night drink.... A good night out!

You have to love a restaurant called the cow... you have to. I have walked past it a couple times…read moreand actually never knew what it was called or what kind of food they served. All I remember is that when I walk by to grab lunch, there are freshly baked baguettes on one of the tables. One of my staff suggested it, so when it was time for date night, I suggested the one to Mr. Snarky. It wasn't full when we arrived, but there were a lot of reservations, including a very lively, all-blokes Christmas dinner happening in the other room. The offered us a choice of two tables, one that they would need back at 7:30 (it was 6:30) or one that was free all night. The unfortunate part about the available table was that it was right next to the door, but the lovely part was being able to watch the grill master at work. I wasn't going to order a starter as I had just been to the pub with some work colleagues, where we had some nibbles with our drinks, but I saw these mini-skewers... so I may have impulsively ordered some. It was a bit difficult to decide because everything looked really good (we could see it going past our table) and we didn't want to over order... like we nearly always do. So I ordered the 8oz Sirloin while Mr. Snarky had the 12oz Sirloin. We decided on two sides (they suggest 2 to 3 sides for two): potato wedges with cheese and a green salad. The bring some bread around (yes, the lovely baguettes I see on the table when I walk past) with some salsa. I would have called it Pico de Gallo, but it tasted like they used a bit of vinegar instead of lime juice... it was still lovely and great on the bread. While we were waiting, about four different staff came over to take our order... and the one that did take our order seemed to struggle in getting everything correct. Because of this, if we could give half stars, I would give a 4.5, but I guess it is better than the wait staff ignoring you. Our little skewers with chorizo, cubes of tender beef, and red onion came over and they were lovely! I highly suggest eating a bit of chorizo with a bit of the beef... flavor explosion! There were three, so we each had one and split the last one. The steak comes out on a plate of its own, while the sides come in little round terra cotta dishes. So it may not look gourmet, but it certainly tastes wonderful. Our steaks were so tender and very well seasoned... not too salty and allowed the natural flavor of the steak to be the star of the show. The green salad was a nice side because it was lightly dressed with olive oil and lemon, so it was refreshing and light. And the wedges... there were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, although in my opinion, they didn't need the cheese :). It really was the right amount of food because when dessert came around we didn't say no. When our waiter told us the cheesecake of the day, Lemon and Lime, and also said it was his favourite, I changed my mind to have cheesecake, while Mr. Snarky changed his mind from cheesecake to the brownie. The cheesecake was divine! I've not had a cheesecake this good in awhile... it was rich, but so light! I am definitely going to look up The Heavenly Cheescake Co... where they get their cheesecakes from :). Overall, it was a great dinner and next time I want to try their ceviche!

The restaurant hall is quite…read morelarge, and ceilings are quite high, which means it's not too noisy and great for acoustics if there is a band playing (like it was the evening we were there). The menu is quite extensive, on top of that they are very happy to show you the meat cuts on a small table that is wheeled right to your table. We thoroughly enjoyed starters, mains and dessert. Our waiter was very friendly and happy to advise and check our questions about food with the chef if he didn't know the answer. The food was just heavenly! I would love to come back.

Generally, you can save 25% off food with Gourmet Society membership but this offer takes it further. Inside, the decor is fantastic being set in an old Methodist Church just off Deansgate, accessed via a ramp with a very steep gradient or a large step. The inside area is a stunning old building, decorated with cow print. The cocktail menu was rather expensive, they also didn't have anything basic and seemed to have weird, wacky cocktails which I really didn't fancy, standard spirits and mixers were also rather expensive too. I didn't end up going for a cocktail in the end - one of the best places in the city for a cocktail has to be the Hard Rock Cafe, a 70cl cocktail and a collectable glass for under £13 meant I'd head thereafter for some booze before heading home - the selection here didn't cut it for me. Although known for their steak offerings, I opted for the Spatchcock Chicken. I did enjoy the flavours of the chicken although the leg piece didn't have a lot of meat on, I really enjoyed the breast part - I just wish it would have been more breast. The flavours, spices and sauces were good but I still think it didn't represent value for money at all, this dish alone was £18 without any sides! For sides, I decided to opt for chips/fries, at £5 a portion I expected them to be good, but they just weren't. I found them to be poorly seasoned as well as a little overcooked and soggy, for such a price you'd expect them to be good, fresh chips when in all honestly I've pulled out better fries from my freezer at a fraction of the cost, this meant although I did enjoy a half of my chicken, it didn't cut it as nothing went with it. Considering they only have one lot of chips, there's nothing which would go with steak either, who wants steak and mash? All the staff seemed friendly, with the exception of my waitress who seemed more like an angry mother, who seemed to treat me and my party like a child, for example forcing us to use the menu as a placemat for our food. I also found it a shame to see they were unable to adapt dishes, now this is fine dining, a high-end place with mains costing at least £18 and some items going up towards the £100 mark, a place like this being unable to adapt dishes is truly dissapointing especially for the price mark, they were unable to remove sauces etc as it came "pre-marinated" in many cases. My server also seemed a little rude and easily confused, for example, she couldn't understand when my friend ordered a starter as a main course which was down to the fact he didn't want anything with spices on, as every dish came pre-marinated other than the steak. She did get there in the end, but even that was a struggle. There was also a long wait for food, it at one point felt like I'd never get my food which was quite frustrating as well. They didn't seem overly busy and it didn't seem like anything the large open kitchen couldn't handle either. They do have gluten-free labelled on the menu and do have a few choices, sadly their gluten-free bread is seeded bread which I hate (I wish everywhere didn't put seeds in bread as it ruins it!), also there were no gluten-free starters on the menu which again was dissapointing. Do bear in mind also that this place has a rather high service-charge at 12.5% regardless of how many people are dining, this is also applied before any discounts so even though our group of 3 saved £10 per person, this amount was also subject to the service charge, so that alone worked out close to £9. Considering the long wait for food and the attitude of my server, I don't understand the justification behind that by any means. A high-end place which doesn't live up to the price tag, some good flavours in the chicken and nice decor warrant an extra star but I won't be rushing back to this place. 2*

I am rarely this impressed by steak quality outside of the US. And the wine list! Orin Swift (the famous maker of Papillon), Stag's Leap, and lots of lesser known but still excellent brands from around the world. This is going to be my first stop next time I'm in York. My only comment -- but maybe this is just from an American used to farm-to-table food -- is that just like everywhere else in England, I wish there were fewer fried things and more vegetables on the menu (although the tomato side salad was amazing). Still the freshest, most farm-to-table type of meal I've had in York.

Waitstaff were very attentive and friendly. Hubby ordered onion rings which were hand battered and delicious. I ordered cod and vegetable risotto which were fine but not remarkable. Broccolini with blue cheese sauce barely had any blue cheese or sauce and was hard, not cooked really much at all. I left half of the serving. We had bread pudding for dessert which was also okay. I didn't find the seasoning of the food to be adequate and maybe salt and pepper on the table would have helped this. By the time our food came out, the waitstaff was busy so I didn't have a ready opportunity to ask for salt. And should I have to ask? This place has a charming interior but i'd suggest drinks here, not dinner.

As we sat down, we made our choices, and was expecting to be served, so we could order drinks/starters. But even though there were less than 3 tables in service, I had to go and find a server so I could order our drinks and meals. This could be forgiven if it were busy, but it was not, and there were plenty of staff just gazing into the void. When I managed to collar someone to make the order, we had to wait an extended length of time, for the over priced, poorly cooked food. When the mains arrived, probably 40 mins after ordering, both the burger, and the steak were EXTREMELY salty, and zero flavour depth. It was so salty, my mouth is still dry and burning as I write this review. You would normally expect, to be asked how the food is, during your meal. And genuinely wanting feedback, to add to value added work, to keep the business continually improving. But in the Firepit, it seems, nobody cares how your food is. We spent the whole meal, batting away flies, and choking on enough salt, to put us in perpetual hypertensive crisis. I mentioned to 2 staff members, how terrible the experience was, but nothing was mentioned to management, and to be quite honest, they didn't seem like they cared. In the restaurant business, you have to be monitoring customer experience closely, as you're only as good as your last weeks customers, so if this isn't actioned upon, I can see this space up for rent, very soon. At the Fire Pit, you pay city premiums, for terrible service/food/experience. This really is a pretentious venue, with zero quality control, or customer service. Experience is everything, and I can say wholeheartedly, they have missed the mark.
