These plumbers were hired as a subcontractor for a renovation that I did on my house last year. They were specifically hired to attend to the plumbing bits in the bathroom renovation and to install a gas on-demand water heater. First. The unit was installed on the wrong spot on the house. We had selected a spot where it would be the most out of the way, just to the right of a window at the back of the house. It was installed to the left. Not really a big deal, but annoying. Second. A year ago, I was showing a friend the renos and she asked where the thermostat for the water heater was as she has an on-demand system too. We couldn't find it. When I called, the plumbers were "oh right. We need to get back out there and finish that." Except all renovations were supposed to be complete, so I had to let them in instead of the general contractor. Third. When they came to install the thermostat, I pointed out that the flexible pipe that fed the water heater were lying in the dirt under the house, rather than strapped as they should have been. Fourth. The water heater wouldn't heat on a somewhat consistent basis. I discovered I couldn't have hot water AND run the gas dryer. And sometimes there didn't seem to be a reason. Turn on the hot water; nope, runs cold; check the thermostat & it's beeping an error at me; shut the whole thing off; try again in 5 minutes; and it's all good. INFURIATING. After calling the plumbers and then getting some outside advice, it was discovered that short run of 1/2 inch pipe was left in the run to the water heater which demands a minimum of 3/4 inch pipe. Call and complain. Then I got busy with OTHER renovations. Fifth. Discover months later that the pipe was never changed out. Bug them until it happens. So 10 months after the job later, the job is finished. Everyone is very pleasant, but I shouldn't have to hound a contractor for a year to get a job done.

I was contacted prior to the service call and was told their best guy would be coming out to check on the situation. He was the most senior person they had and if he couldn't fix it, then it couldn't be fixed. He came out and looked for about 5 mins at the several knobs I have that control side jets, rain shower and handle sprayer and couldn't identify the name brand of my shower system. He didn't bother to see where the leak might be coming from or take off any of the handles to even look in the valves. He left and said he would write up a proposal to fix it. Turns out that proposal was to replace the whole system at a cost of $3000. Since then i have had several other plumbers come out to give quotes on replacing the whole system since that's what I was told needed to be done and I wanted to make sure $3000 was a fair quote. Then one plumber finally asked "why are you replacing this?" and he took a few minutes found the problem very quickly. He Identified the manufacture of the system as Legacy Brass, took out two valve stems to inspect and found that the leak was coming from a bad solder T in the wall.. Fixed that up real quick and literally saved my thousands of dollars. As for George's master plumber.. I understand companies want to make money, but by not doing his due diligence in even looking for the actual problem, he tarnishes the reputation of himself and his employer. Upstairs suspects included an old water heater closet that had been turned into a vanity room with a sink in the 60s, and the original bathroom from initial build in 1909. I was thinking it was a supply pipe issue. Richie's plumber disagreed, he thought we should change the wax on the toilet, even though the toilet did not appear to be running, was only used occasionally, and after all I'm a mechanical engineer by training and I thought it was a pressurized supply issue. But I'm also not an AH and bit my tongue. The short: Me wrong; he right. He changed the wax, and now months later, no sign of leak. The toilet flapper was indeed leaking, only very occasionally triggering a refill, but creating enough of a trickle to surface-tension its way along the pipe and sneak out through a compromised wax ring. Score: Plumber experience, 1; modeling fluid flow with a diffy-Q, 0. As impressive as the initial correct diagnosis was the caveat left with me when they had gone. Plumber told me "probably is the wax ring, be we can't really be sure. You'll know in a few days. We might be wrong and would have to tear into the wall to look at supply and sewage lines" What refreshing and honest advice after years of bad experiences with HVAC and auto mechanics where an initial diagnosis was made confidently, repaired but also accompanied by "oh we *also* found that...we need another day." Cue another work ticket and a second bill, usually bigger than the first. Bad tank of gas? "Oops, sorry; timing belt. Our bad. JHere's the bill" or "yeah, that fan motor is all that's bad but we can't fix a $150 motor, you need an $18000 new system." It's a real and growing problem in the repair industries. Not at Richies Plumbing: they were honest about my issue, up front about the small chance something other than the wax ring was leaking, and turned out to be right. I highly recommend Richies.
