In a neighborhood full of kebab and fried chicken shops, Ploythai stands out as a really good, honest bit of regional cuisine. Never mind the cheesy, stereotypical interior (which I actually find charming--including the relatively new fish tank in the front window!), the food and service are just fantastic. At the front of the restaurant is always an older Thai woman who is seriously sweet and welcoming, which is a good sign. She and whoever is serving are great. Personally, I've had many different things on the menu and have never been disappointed. Even my partner who is quite picky about spicey foods loves this place. Try the Som Tum (green papaya salad)--they make it just like my friends from Laos/Thailand make it. The house red is fine if you're not too picky. Any time of year, any day of the week, this is a sure bet for decent Thai food in Walthamstowe. read more
