I adore this place…read more It doesn't matter how amazing you are if I can't afford you. Food to me will never be worth it. You can drizzle this and foam that, but all I want is a good meal, good service and not to feel like I've been ripped off. On the Mrs recommendation we popped in here for dinner one night. Not having a lot of experience with Thai food at the time (aside from a Thai curry here and there in random pubs - what's with that trend) so I was a bit sceptical. The restaurant is canteen style. Individual tables but with bright simple furniture and accent pieces on the walls. This place is busy, but not overbearingly so. They offer a take away service so there were lots of people ordering at the counter at the back to take away that Thai goodness. We started with Tempura, which was divine. Second best I've ever had after Feng Sushi on the South Bank. We also had a selection of veggie nibbles which were all really interesting. For mains I had Pad Thai and she a red Thai curry. Both were gorgeous. Large, generous portions and simply but pretty presentation. There was a lovely woman serving us. She spoke barely any English but was delightful, attentive and had a warm and welcoming smile. Safe to say she's always had good tips from us. The best thing of all was the bill. Starters, mains and drinks all at around £22. I may be cheap, but the food was not. All fantastic quality and amazing value.

Finally went to the right one last night and ordered Yen Ta Fo, couldn't I found this dish (flat rice noodle in pink soup) in London! The food and the drink were good and authentic, very good service as well. One more thing, there were a table of 5 kept making a lot noises, clapping, shouting, laughing... Obviously the manager noticed that and went to their table and pointed to the "no noise" sign, good for him!

I've found my new go-to Thai! Sure, it's a bus/tube or car ride from my home but its worth it…read more Somtam is a small Thai restaurant in the middle of Askew Road, an area which seems to have become a tad gentrified. Next door, the Ginger Pig was holding an urban butchery course-very chic! But, back to Somtag. As I say, it's quite small and on weekends I would definitely book. The decor is solidly Thai but in an understated way. We were greeted by the owner who was politeness itself-he told us a little of how he came to own the place. We ordered drinks and tap water was brought for us and then constantly re-filled-very good touch. Service was generally excellent. We had: Thai fish cakes soft shelled crab (both to start) Massaman lamb curry green curry Pad Thai Both starters were really good. I love Thai fishcakes, though they can get on the greasy side. These were freshly made and non-greasy with clean flavours. The soft shelled crab was very reasonably priced at about £6 but we got 2-3 huge pieces. Not the best crab I've had but for the money they were absolutely fine. I was concerned ordering the lamb curry-I have a "thing" about lamb as it can be chewy/fatty. I needn't have worried-the lamb was slow cooked, lean and wonderfully tender. The sauce was rich and deep-a revelation. The green curry was less fireworks but very nice indeed with all the attendant flavours you would expect in a good Thai curry. Pad Thai-tick yet again-huge king prawns were buried deep in the noodles. We had no desert as we could hardly walk after this. If you live in the area or even if you don't give this friendly, very competent restaurant a bash. We will certainly return.

The staff were all very professional, helpful and friendly. At the same time it was not stuffy and didn't make you feel uneasy. We tried the sampler platter for appetizer which was delicious. It was a good array of the their wonderful cuisine. The fried appetizers were not greasy and cooked just right. Loved the chicken/nuts dumpling, very unique and full of flavor and spices. For entree we tried the Lamb curry, sea bass curry, meat curry and pad Thai. They were all a hit, but the sea bass was the winner as far as we were concerned. The sauce and flavor was the perfect combination. Since it was a birthday celebration, we had the molten chocolate cake and the mango cheesecake, an amazing experience trying both (served with vanilla ice cream). I feel like an absolute fucking bellend tbh, spending all my time in fucking yumyums (which has the world's stupidest name and is only fun coz they have those tables that sink into the floor but half the time they don't let you sit in them anyway) when this absolute solid gold TREASURE is one minute round the corner. Anyway, the window seat is right next to some cute fairy lights and flowers and shit. As per usual I embarrassed my dining partner - 2015 Elite Yelper, Luke Y - by announcing that if this was a tinder date he would definitely be getting laid. BE WARNED THOUGH - romantic as it is, that table is draughty as fuck whenever anyone goes out for a cigarette. The food is the most authentic Thai I've had outside of actual Thailand. We ordered like the fat fucks that we are, and had fish cakes, chicken satay, squid and some kind of stir fried pork. I also rate their masaman curry and kanom jeeb dumplings more highly than I can express in words, and their homemade ice creams are fleek af too plus they do cool flavours like coconut and pandan. Your whole experience here is going to be heightened immeasurably by the cuteness of the tiny Thai grandma that serves the food. I just want to kiss her all over her jolly little face. She brings you these little spearmint chewy sweets with your bill that instantly take on the exact texture of pre-chewed chewing gum when you eat them. Maybe they are chewing gum? Either way, I swallow, but that's enough about my personal life LOL. All in all, it's an A+ experience every time. Big up Thai Cafe, I love you.
