It was a very nicely kept country-style pub. The Dog Inn is out in the sticks but a simple bus or drive out from Birmingham. We went on a Saturday for lunch and there was a fairly steady stream of local customers popping in, either to the posh dining side or the main bar. The surroundings were very comfortable and kept in immaculate condition. These folks take their cleaning seriously. Everything was spotless and well ordered. Service was good and food great value. While it's not exactly super exciting, for pub grub it was more than acceptable. I think my 8oz steak, with chips, peas and onion rings worked out at around £9. The beer was also well kept. Coffee was dire tho and I wouldn't recommend it if you're anything like a coffee geek! Too hot and too bitter for me. My steak was also definitely on the medium to well-done side rather than the medium rare I ordered, so a bit of a downer there. I had Crumble and gloopy custard which together was a little sweet but hit the spot nicely. As an easy going lunch stop over offering decent drinks and food at nice prices I would recommend. We stayed an hour and a half and felt quite comfy just scoffin' and chattin'. Looking out the rear window into the garden we were both relieved to see no undue rustling in the bushes!

While I wouldn't call it a "budget" menu, it was good value but the drinks are on the higher priced scale. It's very friendly and they have awards for cleanliness. You would have to travel by car to get there and I would also recommend using SatNav because it is easy to get lost around there! There is a nice play park with a few unsual climbing structures, fun slides and a few obstacle courses which are quite fun. The inside is general "pub feel", just a bit dark wood and some old-fashioned British pub decor. There is a nice dark wood bar, which I'm always a fan of. The manager is a very nice helpful man who often has time for a chat, and isn't freaked out by kids. The food here is VERY average, definitely out of the frozen foods section and warmed through. It's nothing offensive (hey, a lot of restaurants use frozen food -- you'd never realize unless they told you!), but definitely standard pub grub -- lasagna, scampi and the like. They do the usual beers and a few ciders on tap, and have J20s and fruit juices for kids. They also do a nice children's menu, and some smaller puddings. It's very family friendly, and as I've never been there during the evening, I can't comment on the night life or any entertainment they may have. On a sunny day, a canal-side pub is just what you're looking for, and for that, I'd recommend the Dog & Doublet heartily!

But all the ones I've tried so far have been very delicious, rich and strong! One thing that's very annoying about this pub is the opening times. Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.
