The Dog Inn - A nice chilled and clear pint!

I was feeling unsure, but imagine my surprise when we 'pulled off' the main road, slipped smoothly 'round a tight bend and 'came' upon our destination. I was 'relieved'. It was a very nicely kept country-style pub. The Dog Inn is out in the sticks but a simple bus or drive out from Birmingham. We went on a Saturday for lunch and there was a fairly steady stream of local customers popping in, either to the posh dining side or the main bar. The surroundings were very comfortable and kept in immaculate condition. These folks take their cleaning seriously. Everything was spotless and well ordered. Service was good and food great value. While it's not exactly super exciting, for pub grub it was more than acceptable. I think my 8oz steak, with chips, peas and onion rings worked out at around £9. The beer was also well kept. Coffee was dire tho and I wouldn't recommend it if you're anything like a coffee geek! Too hot and too bitter for me. My steak was also definitely on the medium to well-done side rather than the medium rare I ordered, so a bit of a downer there. I had Crumble and gloopy custard which together was a little sweet but hit the spot nicely. As an easy going lunch stop over offering decent drinks and food at nice prices I would recommend. We stayed an hour and a half and felt quite comfy just scoffin' and chattin'. Looking out the rear window into the garden we were both relieved to see no undue rustling in the bushes!

We caught the smell of their food on the way out and it was so nice that we returned for a meal. The menu was ok and the food was delicious. While I wouldn't call it a "budget" menu, it was good value but the drinks are on the higher priced scale. Children are welcome but they do not have a dedicated children's menu although there are light snacks on the menu such as hotdog and chips which are all under £5. It's very friendly and they have awards for cleanliness. You would have to travel by car to get there and I would also recommend using SatNav because it is easy to get lost around there! (Or maybe that was just me!)

My husband and I already heard about the food reputation of this pub so we trek to the village of Curdworth, in Coleshill, to meet his friend and wife for a perfect meal. We had been in Curdworth before enjoying other nice pubs in the area but I have to say, White Horse is a 5 out of 5 experience! Checking their deals, we decided for a Wednesday visit when there is a steak night when 2 meals + a bottle of wine costs £29.95. Considering the size and selection of steaks and also the the vast wine list, the meal was not pricey at all. This very cozy pub is an invitation for those who want to bring your family, partner or just want to treat yourself with good meal and good drinks. Update: I just forgot to mention this pub sponsors a local team called Coleshill Athletic which our friend Simon plays for and he probably will be very happy now that I mentioned it! So, go Coleshill Athletic!

The halloumi came with chips, mushy peas and a gorgeous gherkin relish. The gherkin relish was so nice, the waitress went and got some more for me! It was priced at £9.5o, so not cheap but definitely worth it. I had the Melba crème brulé for dessert, it was nice but I think I prefer my creme brulé as just that rather than with an added layer of sponge as this had. The pub has a feel of a countryside village pub so didn't really feel like I was by Birmingham.

We often ride our bikes from the Tamworth end of the Fazeley canal, up to the Dog & Doublet. There are some great tables and chairs outside, and a place to tie up horses (hey, needs must). There are always lots of people outside on a sunny day, having a chat and sitting with doggies on leashes. There is a nice play park with a few unsual climbing structures, fun slides and a few obstacle courses which are quite fun. The inside is general "pub feel", just a bit dark wood and some old-fashioned British pub decor. There is a nice dark wood bar, which I'm always a fan of. The manager is a very nice helpful man who often has time for a chat, and isn't freaked out by kids. The food here is VERY average, definitely out of the frozen foods section and warmed through. It's nothing offensive (hey, a lot of restaurants use frozen food -- you'd never realize unless they told you!), but definitely standard pub grub -- lasagna, scampi and the like. They do the usual beers and a few ciders on tap, and have J20s and fruit juices for kids. They also do a nice children's menu, and some smaller puddings. It's very family friendly, and as I've never been there during the evening, I can't comment on the night life or any entertainment they may have. On a sunny day, a canal-side pub is just what you're looking for, and for that, I'd recommend the Dog & Doublet heartily!

The place really has character to it, and I have to say, regarding the copious amounts of wooden beams holding the ceiling up, it feels as thought the inside of the building should be listed as some sort of relic. The punters who drink here are also very old-worldy, and I always feel like I've stepped back in time when I've gone inside. I really love the selection of drinks sold here, and I usually buy a few different glasses of wine. But it's not any old wine, flavours range from strawberry to cherry to elderflower to plum to dandelion to nettle. I'm yet to try the nettle, next time eh! But all the ones I've tried so far have been very delicious, rich and strong! One thing that's very annoying about this pub is the opening times. Everything is very hazy, because the Griffin states that it closes at lunch times, but then seems to open whenever it feels like it. I've tried to go there at 3pm, 4pm and 5pm and it's been closed. Surely they should be open the majority of the day to bring in drinkers.

It used to be an…read moreold coaching inn, and still has the old fabulous stables, redone and adding a touch of history to the place. A few years ago it was partially ruined in a flood, but the rebuild has gone a long way to making it one of the best pubs in Tamworth. It has a very large garden, lots of tables, a canopy and outside braziers for nice but chilly spring evenings. The inside has low ceilings, exposed beams and magnolia walls. It's a nice, comfy old English pub feel, but without the tatty standard maroon carpet. There aren't many tables inside, so standing is pretty much a must. The Plough & Harrow gets really busy on weekend nights, and is a haven to the young and trendy Tamworth set (you didn't know they existed, did you?) before they go on to a club. The music is pretty decent, through speakers, and so loud on weekends that talking inside isn't very plausible. The P&H also have a very nice restaurant attached, which I haven't been to, but have heard very positive reviews about -- it's mainly Italianish food with a modern twist. The pub grub here is very good, with some different things (Cajun Chicken Sandwich, YUM), and with excellent chips. I can't rave enough about these chips, which are nearly potato wedges, nicely cooked with delicious seasoning. The main bartender/manager is a really friendly guy, and all the staff are pretty chatty and nice. They often have fun activities, both for adults in the evening and families at the weekends, like an American 4th of July party (yay!), and festivals. They provide accomodation, which some of my friends from the US took advantage of when they came over for my wedding. The rooms are all refurbished and nicely laid out, with comfy beds and decent WCs. Nothing astonishing, exccept when you consider the SUPER CHEAP price. The rooms are all a bit off from the pub, so the noise level also isn't too bad.

We're glad we bothered to go a little bit off the motorway, as it was a lovely place to stop. The food was excellent- a wide variety of pub favourites and more unusual stuff at reasonable prices. The atmosphere was friendly and fairly warm, it was all beautifully clean and quite cosy inside, and it was easily worth spending the 10 minutes driving that it took to get away from Tamworth motorway services. Recommended.
