I love places like this. The classic donuts are perfect, not too heavy, not too light. Great quick service, kind staff and lots to choose from. I recommend picking up an assorted dozen before heading to the horse races for the day. read more

Old school bakery with lots of options. Sandwiches? Cakes? Cookies? All that and more! Nice people, grab your ticket number when you walk in so they can help you in an orderly fashion. Got the kolatchie and it was delicious! Also tried the country ham salad - not sure what I was expecting but the salty ham on a bun was delicious! Parking was a little hectic, so try to go off peak hours or park a little further and walk! read more

I'm from Louisville and I've lived in the east end for years - yet, I've never been to Plehn's Bakery. Part of me understands its longstanding history creates loyal customers and nostalgia. Finding myself walking by was the perfect opportunity to step inside. Doughnuts sounded like a great combination with the coffee I was planning to consume down the street. Take a number when you walk in. The building space is small and this morning was chaotic. In a corner was a couple sampling cake for their wedding, others were ordering or waiting to have their order taken. Most noticeable, besides the cakes they are well known for, were the rows of cookies. Kuchens also caught my eye. Finally I spotted doughnuts. The selection was smaller than I expected, but enough to try a few with my husband and son. * The apple fritter - yum! Soft, chunks of apple. * The pretzel doughnut - also a yum! It's basically a glazed doughnut in a different form. * The chocolate glazed - meh. Fairly basic and they didn't taste as fresh. It was overwhelming to get a good look at all their offerings and I also wasn't sure how much any of the items would ring up. The young ladies behind the counter were very helpful and hustled to fill orders. It's a hectic vibe and I felt way more relaxed walking out the doors. They offer a small counter with stools for you to order sandwiches and milkshakes. Parking is on the street in St Matthews. It can take a minute to find a spot that isn't restricted for another business. Bring your patience. read more

Great food, great service! Wonderful bakery with many scrumptious treats to choose from. I love their chicken salad and egg salad and some spice cookies for the perfect lunch! read more

I wanted a little something sweet so I decided to venture out to Plehn's. It's the true meaning of an old school bakery. I was hoping to get a piece of caramel cake, but once I arrived, I was told that they didn't do cake slices, only whole cakes. I ended up getting a cupcake and a chocolate chip cookie. The cupcake unfortunately was very underwhelming. The chocolate frosting had an odd taste and the cake wasnt that flavorful. The chocolate chip cookie was just okay. There's a lot to choose from, except cake slices. LOL They dont have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of street parking. By the looks, im sure it's been a staple in Louisville for a long time and I'm sure it will continue to be. read more

Going to be a weird review because I never stepped foot in this place. A friend of mine brought some pastries over from this place and all I can dream about now is going there to get more... sooo good! read more

Plehn's is obviously a Louisville treasure. You, as I did must., go there and then try to leave without ordering more than you have on your list. It is so alluring with its tantalizing and nostalgic offerings, you can't meet the challenge. You must succumb. Pastries, ice creams, fountain concoctions in a century old shop. So trite to say: you can't say no once you enter the doors of Plehn's Bakery! And don't just take my word for it. I have no doubt this is a worst kept secret in Louisville. But I am compelled to join in with knowing patrons, to say so anyway, with my visit on July 15, 2026. read more

Past few visits have been... mediocre. Taken my friend with me... my godson... and back again. The eclairs my friend got today- she said they're not very good like no taste to them not even a little sweetness to the cream. On the other hand... my kid got her used to be favorite- the oatmeal cream pies - and the cream is so sweet that it's inedible like I tried a tiny amount and was coughing like it locked my throat up. It's unbearablely too sweet- that is a first cause again these are her favorite. Well I'm the orange blossom girlie... I don't know if they changed the recipe or someone made them differently... but this time- this wasn't it. There was no orange flavor like past times... the icing was way sweeter. But it didn't taste like the orange blossoms that I fell in love with. My godson had his ginger bread man fitting his cupcake so I can't tell you about it- he just hulk smashed and played with them so to speak. Lmao so glad it wasn't in my car okay. read more

I ventured into Plehn's recently to get some cupcakes to celebrate my daughter's birthday with family, and Plehn's was just perfect for this. First, it celebrated its 100th birthday this year. How cool is that!?!? And it's clear when you step in that it has accumulated a wealth of baking expertise during that time. Its cases were FILLED with all manner of sweet treat, from cookies to cakes to pastries to bread to my aforementioned cupcakes. The air was sugar-filled and beckoning. Plehn's makes beautiful cupcakes with a flower design in icing on top. These were what I originally intended to buy, but they were a little outside of my budget at 6 for $19. Not complaining about that -- I imagine each cupcake takes time and skill to craft. So I looked for something else, and I found Christmas-themed cupcakes for much cheaper. And bonus: Each was topped with a plastic Christmas ring! These cupcakes were intended for several kids (and adult-like kids), so this was a great option. I purchased a dozen of these, and they stayed moist and delicious until we ate them a couple of days later. Don't sleep on this Louisville bakery mainstay. They definitely know how to make sweets that sweeten any day. read more

I'm in my 60s and I've gone to Plehns ever since my mother would take me as a young child and have always loved it. However, the people that initially started the Bakery in 1924 would not be very happy if they knew that you were closed on Sunday, which is the biggest travesty I've ever known please reopen on Sunday Sunday was meant for donuts!!!!!!! read more

This bakery is worth the hype. We saw lines and heard how good their baked goods are so we stopped by for a sampler of items they make. Brownie was my favorite but the cookie and frosting was light and sweet. If we need a cake for anything I will certainly special order because they look stunning too. read more

Might be the best in Louisville, but the birthday cake I bought my mother was no better than what you'd get at Kroger or Costco. Same crappy overly sweet sheet pan. Butter-cream icing? Definitely not. Granted, the cake was pretty and the counter service, excellent. Skip the upcharge for "Louisville's finest." read more

Stopped in after an early dinner. Just peeled in the windows and couldn't help going in and purchasing the we didn't need. The store is clean and extremely bright and light inside. We were welcomed by multiple staff when we opened the door. You are immediately on heightened alert to the smells, colors and spectacular creations. The homemade cakes are beautifully decorated and reasonably priced. We took home snickerdoodles, chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies with smiley faces and thumbprint cookies. We will definitely be back to get a cake for a family read more

Family owned for many years. Great place in the heart of St Matthews. They aim to please. Everything is fresh and delicious

My dad loves their butter kuchen. I had my aunt text me what he wanted & it came through as lichen ;). I went in & the very sweet lady felt it was probably the kuchen. She packaged it up nicely & we got a vanilla ice cream cone to go. All delicious. The butter custard & dough ratio in the kuchen was perfect. My dad said it's as delicious as he remembered it as a kid. He's on Hospice & really enjoyed this sweet treat from his childhood. The bakery seemed to have a steady flow of people. They have parking in the back which was great. Only downfall is that where you exit, it's a bit treacherous to get back out on the main road. Also be very careful if you park in front further back because the curb is super high & I scrapped my dad's SUV door bottom. I can only imagine what it would do for a car- you might not be able to even get out. (I know that's not Plehn's issue). We are excited to come back & try some more of their items. The staff is really nice! I will likely get their recommendations for our next purchase. read more

Went here for the first time this weekend. Was a disorganized mess. They have a take a ticket thing for people being served. That they clearly weren't following. We had a ticket and even so we had 3 staff ask if they could help and then disappear to help someone else before we finally got helped. Donuts were ok. Better than Dunkin or Krispy Kreme but not on par with Nords. read more

Ordered a couple simple, but standout items. Yellow cake with caramel icing and a cherry kuchen. Divine. Ordered online. Simple pick up. Wanted my mother- in- law and her elderly neighbor to have a decadent dessert to go with the homemade meal.I prepared. They both got some of each one. Raved them. Husband also grabbed 2 angel dips. 1 for him and 1 for a coworker. Again, divine. Been a customer of Plehns my entire life. No complaints. Ever. Christmas special orders, phenomenal. Routine stop ins. Equally phenomenal. Our community is so blessed to have such a divine bakery. Praying for many more years from Plehns. read more

Awesome local bakery. They have everything from cakes to cookies, to various treats! But if you're like me, the mark of a great bakery is their ability to make a glazed donut! The variety here is unmatched! My favorite item is the gingerbread man (all year) . Reasonable prices and kind and caring staff .

Here the facts, this place is a goat spot in my book. I don't even live in the state! I moved to CO back in 2012 and I still fantasize about the yum yums and gingerbread they make here. Plehn's is my go to bakery in Louisville. I was in town for my birthday and The family got me a carrot cake. As always amazing. It's my go-to for all things sweets. The variety of butter kuchen's makes the selection easy. Stop in for a sweet treat!

I decided to stop in around 8:30 on a Thursday morning. I was very happy upon walking in that they were taking social distancing and safety seriously based on the sign outside, but that is not what I experienced inside. The woman who helped me touched the paper lining in the box multiple times without gloves. She did not touch my pastries with her bare hands, but her germs were all over the box. She also rang me up which makes me wonder how much cash she touched before touching the inside of my box without cleaning her hands. Inside the store, there are Xs in the store to show 6 feet apart, but the staff did not do anything to ensure people stayed apart. I was at the cash register to check out and there was a woman who was within 1 foot of me! She was being helped by a staff member and the staff member did nothing to remind her to stay on the x. The staff member could have helped her further down the counter or waited until my transactions was complete. With the cash register, there is only a small gap that you can interact with them so it was difficult for me to move out of the way. As for the food I got, I ordered a plain glazed doughnut which didn't look pretty but tasted delicious! I also got a cinnamon strudel pastry and it was much chewier than I expected. I will not get that again. read more
