I visited Pleasant's for the first time last month to purchase some screwdrivers to upgrade my current set (which I've had since 2006 when my grandmother passed, and she likely had the set for 40 years prior to that too). When we walked in, we were immediately greeted and asked if we were looking for something in particular. We were then efficiently walked over to the aisle housing screwdrivers and told about the different options. They were locked in a case, so we would've needed a staff member's help anyway. Apparently people like to steal screwdrivers, which I never would've guessed. Prices seemed fair, but to be transparent, I don't generally buy tools so I don't really know the going rates. Check out was just as efficient with a couple lines in operation. And the cashier was just as friendly as the staff member working the floor. Everyone was properly masked and social distancing was taking place as well. I would suggest supporting this small business and those like it prior to going to the big box stores. read more

My experience at Pleasants today was, well, extremely pleasant! Me and my toddler set out to find some plants and supplies to start a home garden! I've never been interested in plants before quarantine, so everything was new to me. With all of this cooking I've been doing, I thought it would be nice to have fresh herbs at the ready, so off we went. This is the definition of a quaint, local hardware store. There is everything you could need for your home projects plus a little extra, but not much extra. The store is much less overwhelming than the big box hardware stores and the employees were SO helpful. I really enjoyed my experience there, which I never thought I'd say about a hardware store. I also enrolled in their loyalty program and got $5 off my purchase today. Score! The name says it all! It might be weird to review a hardware store, but I had such a nice experience, I wanted to give them props! I went in for bird seed, some hooks, garden items, etc., and I was greeted right away by a friendly salesperson who directed me around the store. When I checked out, the cashier gave me a complimentary bag of popcorn and offered to take my groceries to my car. I felt like I was at Ike Godsey's General Store on Walton's Mountain. I'll still go to HD for the big stuff, but for everyday items, this small neighborhood hardware store will keep my business! Very pleasant, indeed! read more

Pleasants is so much less intimidating than Lowe's or Home Depot (though I do love the HD), and the staff is helpful and friendly. I'm a huge DIY-er, but I'm not much of a builder or tool person. In fact, my bf likes to remind me of that one time in college when I hammered screws into the wall... yes, I thought they were nails, and no, I don't think he'll ever let me live it down. Suffice it to say, I can look like a deer in headlights when I'm in a hardware store. From the first time I perused the shelved at Pleasants, I felt like I could easily find what I was looking for without being completely overwhelmed. It doesn't have the warehouse feel of giant hardware stores, and for that I am grateful. The staff is always super friendly and knowledgeable, and I don't feel like an idiot asking questions. I've got the paint scene covered, but when it comes to tools I am totally at a loss, so I definitely have questions when I'm on a hunt for something specific! Perhaps my favorite part about Pleasants is that I never feel like everyone's staring at me. I get that I don't always look like I belong in a hardware store, but I can get down and dirty with the best of 'em... so don't judge by appearances! This weekend I was on a hunt for cornhole boards and knew that Pleasants carried ready-to-be-primed-and-painted sets. A staff member carried one of the boards to checkout for me, and then also carried it out to my car (despite not being asked to do so). I wasn't expecting that, and I really appreciated the help! Yet another example of why I prefer to frequent Pleasants when I'm in the midst of a furniture or craft project. I was looking for SPAX 2 1/2" #10 stainless steel screws, which appear on its website as a product offered by Pleasants. I called the Westhampton and Patterson Avenue stores to inquire if any were in stock. In both cases, the rep who answered the telephone didn't have the faintest idea what I was talking about. Calling wasn't a complete waste of time, because I would have wasted a whole lot more if I had gone to one of the stores to buy the screws. The lesson is, don't rely on what's advertised on the website to be actually present in the store. Call first. Shows nonexistent or poor, lazy website management; if it's on the website it should be in the store, absent a prominent disclaimer on the website, which isn't there. read more

I went to the Pleasants on Patterson Avenue after walking out of the more convenient one in Midlothian. The folks in Midlothian don't know their products or even where they are located. They would also prefer you didn't bother them with your questions or asking them to make keys. The folks on Patterson Avenue are much more friendly. When I requested assistance, they sent Pat to help me. (I had to ask for assistance only because there were other customers already in the store. After he helped me, Pat greeted the next customer as he walked in and offered to help.) Pat knew exactly where to find the product I was looking for and even gave me some advice to help me decide which one to buy. When I asked for another product, he walked me over to where that product was. He also asked me what I was going to do with it so he could show me the right version of what I needed. When I asked for paintbrushes, he again walked me over to where they were and pointed out a sale that save me more than $10. Excellent customer service! read more

I went into the store with my two girls, both under 4, and needed a hack saw and door knob since we had locked ourselves out of our house . The older gentleman that I spoke with was extremely kind and very informative about what exactly I needed and where everything was. I don't think I would have gotten anywhere near that kind of service in a big box store. I'm very happy we have this store close by and I plan on using it for all my future projects. Hands-down the best customer service I have ever received at a hardware store. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable about every item within the shop and have a solution/advice to resolve any repair-related issue. Although slightly pricy, the staff always have their customers' best interest in mind. Case and point: I needed a jug of Bona wood polish, yet it was a few bucks more than Bed, Bath and Beyond. As I was reluctantly handing my credit card to the young man at the register, the manager (owner?) comes around and tells me to hold off on buying the polish, as a storewide sale was starting the next day. Upon my second visit, he coached me through the best way to install a hook in my dining room to remedy an ill-positioned chandelier. Still an excellent store, disappointing only in comparison, I think. I feel less welcomed [not less welcome, just less actively welcomed] than in the sister stores in the area, as if the employees aren't entirely certain what this yoga-panted person is doing there, and aren't quite certain how to ask. I shop Pleasants for "solutions" to household problems. I tell a helpful technician/salesperson what I am attempting to accomplish and parameters. They point to products they have to accomplish my goals. No aimlessly wandering aisles wondering if products I am buying will work. Compared to Lowes/HD -slightly more expensive. -a lot closer. -shopping quicker as salesperson available to answer questions and find products. read more

I brought in 2 patio doors I requested pet screens and new rollers 4 per door and stated the rollers would not stay on track and I wanted to be sure that they were all replaced and make sure that pet screens were installed. One of the workers put a note on the screens with my order. I paid a $70.00 deposit .The next day I called and talked to Betsy I again told her about my request we agreed on pet screens she then said only 2 rollers were bad I told her I still wanted all new rollers she said to me the new ones will be no better then the ones that were already on the screens.She said they would be find. I said OK. She said it will take 6 to 8 weeks she called me in 2 weeks said they were ready and did you want pet screens and I said yes she said she put bug screens on and said if I want she can take them off and.put pet screens on.I said don't bother .My wife picked them up after paying another $40.85 when I installed them they would not roll, was going to take them back but instead I went to Home Depot and replaced all eight rollers including the two new and she put on. I probably will not go to the store again it's not a ACE anymore and it's not the same. read more

I really like Pleasants a lot! You can find whatever you're looking for, the service is the best in town, and the location is good. It is (usually, but not always) a few pennies more than the big box chain though and they don't have a huge plant selection - at least not at the Libbie branch. Still, use them for most of my run-in run-out needs because I don't want there to be only big box chains left. And because I'm someone who likes advice and guidance at the hardware store; it's a good place for that. read more
