This place is far from being an upscale shopping mall, but for what it is, it's pretty great. After Sharpstown went so far into decline, the renovations are complete, and while there's still a disappointingly large number of empty storefronts, this has turned into the type of mall that you don't find in Houston, but will definitely find south of the border. Two large sections of the mall are carved out into Mercados, providing shopping experiences similar to what you'd find in Mexican open air markets. It may be a bit weird to see a flea market style atmosphere in the mall, but that's exactly what it is, complete with live performances like a Mariachi group every Sunday. There aren't a lot of major chains in this mall, and Burlington Coat Factory is probably the only thing that could possibly qualify as an anchor store, but they just added a new predominantly Spanish cinema and they've loaded up their food court with one-off establishments that serve quality food, which is a major plus. read more

I don't get how this mall is still around. It literally just sells shoes, ghetto tees, jewelry and has 2 barber shops. I only come here for the t-shirts. Some of the shirts are actually clever. GHETTO! We came here for a carnival, and as we were pulling into a parking spot, some jerk cut us off and stole it. Okay, thanks. So we drove around the corner to a lot where we weren't sure if we could park? But did anyway. We walked to the bank next door, only to find out that it wasn't reading anyone's cards... so no cash for the carnival. Thanks. We only had $15 in cash, so Hubbs and I were able to ride one ride ($5 each) and shared a corn ($4). THANKS GUYS!!!!! I ended up stopping by because I lived close by in Westwood. I like the cheap shop. It's not high-end by far and I didn't have any dangerous times there. I can get something for my whole family there. I like Burlington Coat Factory is connected as well! This is definitely a Hispanic mall. Nothing was wrong with that, I just couldn't read many signs lololol DISLIKE the food court. NO WAY !!!! and the play area by it, never again. I thought the play area was nice and my son loves it but then I saw so many ants and other tiny bugs crawling all over and around it. I was so grossed out. NEVER EAT or let your little ones Play THERE! Just shop quick n leave lolol can't chill in the food court so no reason to hang around. I am not scared to shop there though. it's a ok place me and my family went to get some ice cream inside and when we were ordering a very disrespectful staff member that was working there, well i ordered a vanilla ice cream cone and they had a box where the waffle cones were at, and i can't even type this out with out being disgusted there was a life cockroach inside it, there was a slow business we were the only one there. read more

How in the ________ is this place still open? Honestly. How? I mean they only have jewelry shops, 2 barbers shops, and a hoochie clothes store. I can admit, I get my hair cut in this mall, and I used to work at the Foley's in there years ago, but I just don't see how this place survives. Oh and the food court is a huge joke. Also, if you want to find a real quick shortcut to hell, try using the bathroom upstairs on a Saturday. I honestly wanted to burn my shoes after leaving the stall. We went to this mall in the day on April 21. This mall is emptying out in an alarming rate and there were hardly any customers. There is an odd trend with this mall in that even the corridors where the empty anchors were; there are still stores to be found. The food court is down to one restaurant and there are two Thirsty's stands still there. Macy's, JCPenney, and the Cinema have all left this mall but Burlington has stayed. There is also the jewelry exchange building with tons of inexpensive jewelry. Only the very middle of the mall still has near full occupancy. If you have some time to kill check this mall out and you will see many relics of the past here. Some of the closed food outlets still have the menu up and have not been boarded up. There are also several vintage label scars from closed down stores. This mall is not as "Ghetto" as most people have labeled it, but it is old. read more

PlazAmericas - This is the outside of Sharpstown - Shopping Centers Near Me - Houston, Texas

From 1997 to 2004 I lived in an apartment that was a couple of blocks to the north of the mall, and was just before the major anchors Montgomery Ward, JCPenney and Foley's closed shop. The area was already suffering from urban blight due to the surrounding apartment properties and the situation just deteriorated further from there. Now PlazAmericas is the last gasp for this area to improve after the disastrous image of being Houston's "Hip Hop destination" (ugh), and the upside potential is not there, too little too late it seems. The 50+ year-old buildings at the site have matured past their useful life, is not sustainable for a major retail center any longer due to the growth in Sugar Land, people of all races/ethnicities concerned for their well-being won't even go there, and overall the land value exceeds the improvements sitting on it. PlazAmericas/Sharpstown is overdue for the wrecking ball, sadly. However, it is the circle of life. Once a popular and proud market center has run its course, and prolonging its demise is more painful than putting it out of its misery. read more

This mall is the $hit. what you get: - Freshest kicks in town. - Custom decal shirts and hats. - All the best Shoe stores for men. - You don't have to deal with West U / River Oaks teens spending daddies money. Cons - constant harassment to check out the cheap wares at the jewelry kiosks. (just ignore, or ask, "whats free?" - Beware of imitation gear. Fake NBA / NFL gear. - Girls at Galleria tend to be cuter. Overall, it's still a cool mall, and my favorite. If you don't feel safe for any reason, don't go. I remember Sharpstown from the early to late 80's. It was quite the place to shop. I remember around 1984 they added the second floor so it must have been worth something back then. But in recent years it has become ghetto-ized like the rest of Sharpstown. Anyone in retail knows that a mall can't function without major brand name anchor stores. I think that they should put it out of it's misery and tear it down and put in high rise Section 8 housing... Anyone remember the Mercado Del Sol? They tried to renovate an old building and turn it into a mall but instead it sucked all the money out of the City who was in a partnership with the developer. read more

Greg D is straight paranoid. I go to Sharpstown every time I go to Houston as well as King's Best Market on MLK and Griggs. I go for the urban gear at these places. Hard to find t's, one of a kind shoes and underground music are some of the many things that can be found here. Okay, Sharpstown is NOT that bad!!! When I first visited about 8 1/2 years ago, I couldn't believe women shopped in stilettos while pushing baby strollers. I have lived in Houston for seven years now, and I always go to Sharpstown. Bakers has a friendly staff, and I like the Body Shop there. I frequent the hair store because it is great on prices, especially lace-front wigs. As for feeling unsafe or the place being dangerous . . . nay. It's just a bunch of minorities that frequent it, but I like Sharpstown and I never feel threatened. If you are speaking of a "questionable mall, try GREENSPOINT MALL . . . now that place can be a real killer. I haven't stepped one foot inside of it. But this is Houston. One street can have million dollar homes, and the next street over could be the hood!!! read more

Sharpstown mall is getting a makeover! I think they are under new management and they are looking to make it a safer, more enjoyable shopping center. They recently added some new places to eat in the food court and are becoming involved in some good projects like the HIV Testing with 97.9 the box. Everywhere you go there is crime. Trust me, you don't want to see the number of sexual assaults that have happened in the Galleria parking lot. Anyway, it could be worth another try. read more
