Plaza Velarde is better known as Plaza Porticada, for its houses with arcades around the central space, where an ice skating rink is installed in winter.
It is probably the most visited square of Santander, which serves as the main square (Plaza Mayor), where there are various important buildings: The Government Delegation of Cantabria, the Treasury, the Military Government and Caja Cantabria. In the latter, attention is drawn to the two enormous nude sculptures made of bronze that represent Beneficence (the woman) and Savings (the man).
The square has several entrances, through arches. Entering through Paseo de Pereda we will find a sculpture on a pedestal dedicated to the glory of the hero.
Unlike other Plaza Mayor squares in Spain, this one does not have many restaurants and cafes at the bottom floor since most of the buildings here are government entities. read more
