Screen is incredably small compared to the ones in bradford and leeds so I wouldn't go and see a blockbuster there but it's fine for seeing a comedy or kids flick. Also the entry price is so much cheaper than the multiplex's and parking is free if you go to the BaltiChef carpark after 6pm. The 'interval' between adverts and actual film was cute, a chance to buy a choc ice!

I love the Dukes Cinema for several reasons…read more When i go to see a movie I don't necessarily want to see the latest blockbuster. And the Dukes has a fine program of arthouse and independent film that just isn't available anywhere else locally. However they do show popular films and have great Sing a Long nights where they show the Sound of Music etc. This cinema isn't about how much popcorn and coke you can ram down your face, it is about watching good films amongst likeminded people. Add to that the fact you can get a drink from the bar and take it in with you and what more could you want. Support this place and other local businesses. The Dukes is one of the things that makes Lancaster a decent place to live in

When talking about cinematic experiences in the North, let alone the area, one has to shout loud and proud about the IMAX. The IMAX is part of the National Media Museum but deserves it's own proud place in our ever beautiful Yelp listings. It is only one of a handful of IMAX cinemas in the world and it's ours. Go on do a little dance for me, go on. What you get is some unbelievable moments of 3D documentaries and films and also 2D is pretty hot on the massive screen. For me though you have to utilise all of its strengths so definitely check out a 3D option. Especially with the current trend of making everything for the 3D market, you'll soon be spoilt for choice. One of the last Hollywood blockbusters to show there was the last Harry Potter film but I'm more than a little giddy that Alice in Wonderland is next up. I'm so excited about that one that I may need to section myself, sedate myself or run head first into a door. Johnny Depp in 3D and at that size!?! What is not to die happy about? It does get booked up well in advance so make sure you book online or at the museum if you have a specific time in mind. This is how film should be watched, so do yourself a favour and enjoy it to the (I)max. See what I did there, aren't I clever.

The IMAX screen has to be experienced to be believed - it really is MASSIVE, and coupled with the…read morefantastic surround sound system and highly ramped seating, you are guaranteed a good view even if an extremely tall man decides to sit in the seat in front of you (don't they always!) I wouldn't actually recommend your first film is one of the IMAX specials such as to fly and dinosaurs etc as they are quite expensive and also very short (usually about half an hour to three quarters of an hour). Much better would be to see a 'proper' film in it's IMAX version - although only a small percentage of films are shot in IMAX, they really do take your breath away. The Dark Knight has some fantastic IMAX scenes, and at Christmas you really, really HAVE to watch The Polar Express at the IMAX and in 3D too! Oh yes, the IMAX is capable of 3D! It's not your average 3D too, it's actually in-your-face, amazing and quite brilliant 3D! We saw the latest Harry Potter at the IMAX, and even though only some of the scenes were in 3D, the end fight with all the magic and explosions was truly breathtaking. My only quibble would be if you are taking young children to watch a 3D IMAX film, they may be a bit overawed by it all and refuse to put on their glasses which will leave them watching them a blurred image which they'll quickly grow bored of (it happened to one of our party) - but otherwise it's a great experience! This cinema is ancient!…read more Although not the first time I've been since the old Warner Bros cinema was bought by Vue in 2003, it's facilities is nearly exactly the same. Seats are uncomfy and old (although they do have 2 or 3 rows of VIP seats now). Toilets are woeful and old. Ticket prices are also very expensive - £8.40 during peak times (5pm onwards) - and food & drink is getting expensive too. I think if cinemas want to encourage people to visit, they should charge considerably less for tickets, food & drink and invest in refurbishments inside (esp for this outdated Vue). Lastly, thank god for orange Wednesdays!

But the restaurants next door offer discount to the cinema if you eat there - which is a great incentive to get out for the night. Lots of parking - and queues aren't normally bad. I would go all the way to 5 stars if they were an IMAX cinema - it's big enough to have it installed - so they should just do it.

The Royalty is a wee local cinema in Windermere, and seems like a quirky little place. Being a city…read moregirl, I'm normally at the huge multi-plexes, which are pretty one dimensional and soul-less, so I found it a nice experience, as The Royalty has a bit more character about it. We went in the main entrance. There's an old-fashioned ticket seller's booth, but no-one was about. A queue formed, and we all waited and shuffled our feet. Around the foyer, there's a few pictures from ye olde cinema days which were interesting to look at. After a few minutes, an employee appeared on the balcony, and called down to us that the movie was showing on the other screen. Clearly we were a bunch of dummies, although perhaps a sign might have been helpful for customers. To get to the other screen, you leave that bit of the building, walk down the outside of the building and into the other entrance, which we all duly did. In that building, there's another booth, and you get old fashioned paper tickets, which pleased me greatly, for reasons I'm not sure about. You can also buy confectionery. The screen is then straight next to it so no traipsing about. Ideal. The screen room (is that what it's called?) had a bit of a strange feature. It seemed to me that the seats were on a slope. Pretty standard you might say. But sloping the wrong way! Resulting in the seats at the back being lower down than the front. Maybe it was an optical illusion but that's how it seemed to me. There were the usual trailers, and amusing local adverts. Then a guy came out with an old-fashioned ice cream tray round his neck. I really wasn't expecting that! The only thing missing was an advert for Wrestler's hotdogs and a declaration that the non-smoking seats were at the side. Remember that - when you could smoke in a cinema? The usual palaver with the curtains. Lovely gold shiny ones I noticed. Then the movie began. The final quirk that I noticed is that they have put a litter bin right in the middle of the aisle. And people actually used it during the movie. So occasionally, as we were unwittingly sat right next to it, we'd get disturbed by someone thudding litter into it. Bit strange. But also, if you had to evacuate the cinema, it's totally in the way! In summary, a reasonable wee cinema, with some funny little quirks to keep us city girls enthralled.
