I'm visiting Pennsylvania for work this week and decided to return to a Mexican restaurant we've enjoyed before. Mexican food is my go-to, and this place is absolutely top-notch. We walked in and were seated within minutes. The restaurant has plenty of seating options, including tables, bar seating, and booths, making it great for groups or solo diners. Our waiter was quick to take our order, and we were served chips, salsa, and cheese dip shortly after sitting down. I ordered the Birria tacos--and they were incredible. Went tonight. Food was bad...ordered Tacos Al Pastor and have ZERO idea of how they managed to even actually make Al Pastor with little to no flavor given that it's a marinated style taco meat, but alas... here we are. Service was god awful. Completely forgot our table-side guac until AFTER meals arrived. The guac guy finally arrived, then wasn't even made table-side. It was made BEHIND us between the two aisles of tables, as opposed to actually anywhere AT our table. While you might think that would be the worst of it, you'd be wrong. Apparently it's location policy to blow whistles at top volume -to the point where it shrieks so loud the entire Resteraunt echoes with the sound while singing "Happy Birthday" to patrons. I live with a panic disorder stemming from PTSD, and was immediately sent into a triggered panic event. I had to leave immediately ,eating only 1/4 of my meal. When my husband returned to pick his parents up from the Resteraunt ( after having to drive me home shaking and in tears), it took over 20 minutes for the waitstaff to bring the check . When a a manager was asked for It took an additional 10 minutes to "find" a manager, who then was flippant about the entire experience. I will not be returning. read more

My students and I made a reservation on February 25th for a party of 50. The numbers changed and I called March 21st with the new number: 31. I called again March 27th to let them know we were in our way. I spoke to Josh the first two times, letting him know we had a tight schedule and needed to get the students back to NJ on time... When we got there, there was only one waiter for our area. We waited 90 min to get served and probably about 30 min to pay. Reasons we were given: Josh is only the Assistant Manager and we did not speak to the manager (Norma). She was not aware of the reservation until the day BEFORE so she was not prepared for such a large crowd... (mind you we scheduled it a month ahead of time to ensure speedy service) and she stated Josh is new... yet the staff refused to open another register to speed up the checkout process while they stood there shooting the breeze. They sent me to pay with the waiter and had no regard for such a large party having to wait that long. We finally got Norma to speed up the process and take our payment at the front and the other staff members actually did something instead of looking around refusing to help. This should've been a smoothless transaction and a pleasant experience. I am thankful for all my students and their patience but the unprofessional way the restaurant handled this was uncalled for. Oh, and the inconvenience was not reflected in the form of a discount in any way either. Food was ok... not worth the wait and frustration. read more

Came here for my nephew's birthday as his goal was to eat Mexican food. Not knowing anything about this place, I've realized it's a PA-based chain of Mexican restaurants which also happens to span south into Virginia & North Carolina and up north to Connecticut & Massachusetts. Therefore, it's a known name in the state. With that said, for a table of 9, we were seated relatively quickly. The complimentary chips + salsa were really good. However, do request the spicy salsa (habanero?). It's worth the supreme kick and it tastes good when slightly diluting into the regular salsa. We all ordered a potpourri of items. I'll mention them in my comments below: 1) The veggie nachos were pretty damn tasty. They were nice enough to customize it to our needs as well. Was very hearty with the veggies, from broccoli to cauliflower to peppers. 2) We ordered a chimichanga, except made for vegetarians. I wish they would create a separate vegetarian chimichanga on their menu. I'm sure plenty of vegetarians come to eat here. With that said, the serving size was HUGE. 3) I ordered the spinach enchiladas. I was able to finish almost all of the enchiladas. There was a LOT of spinach in there, which is good, but also tough to finish. The bummer is that this could use a combo of black beans + spanish rice. This came with white rice, which I didn't ever think was a great fit with Mexican food. 4) The enchiladas trio I think had a bit too of that cheese sauce. It might be masking the dish, but it was a bit of an overkill. 5) Service was relatively good, even though it seemed like our waitress forgot to provide my other nephew a coke until the main menu hit. With that said, the best part is perhaps the birthday celebrations. Can't go wrong with it. We heard 3 different birthday celebrations in the 1+ hour we were there. I've always enjoyed the consistency of Plaza Azteca, for a "chain American Mexican" spot. The Allentown location was just that, as there were week night drink specials, like $6 Paloma's on Mondays, Rum Runners Tuesdays, etc. and one of my personal basic guilty pleasures, the ala carte 3 Beef Hard Tacos, were $5.50, but now it's $9.75! Absolutely no more drink specials, and the rise in price for one of my favorites, means I will skip on coming to this particular Plaza Azteca. I was told there was new management now, so there's that. There is a location on 378 I will check out, perhaps they have specials. If not, then Plaza will no longer get my business, not that it would even matter to them. Birria tacos: awesome but too oily. Traditionally it's made by dipping the tortilla into fat, but the whole taco was soaked with oil and dripping oil when you picked it up. Nevertheless, it was still delicious and I enjoyed the beef which resembled barbacoa. Service was decent. Most staff spoke some English with the exception of the waiters who were fairly fluent with accents, but this would be a great place to practice Spanish. Atmosphere was nothing special. We've tried the Bethlehem P.A. several times because it's closer to us but we give up. The drinks are meh and the food is just ok. This is compared to the P.A. in Allentown which has a very good house margarita and flavorful dishes with good portions. We expected the 2 locations to be about the same but it's not even close. Plaza Azteca takes me back to my days of playing winter ball in the old Mexican Pro Leagues! I would smash seven homers a game, drive home 17 runs, steal 6 bases, and pitch a perfect game every night. Oh the good ol' days. I was the slug warmer. The homer charmer. The crowd pleaser. The eyebrow tweezer. We'd play quadruple headers every day, Monday through Saturday, non stop ball on the old fields. They'd normally use crop fields to create these stadiums, generally 500 feet from home plate to dead center field, and 125 foot short porches in left, and 275 to right field. Oh I smacked that ball for miles back in the old days. Sundays were the only days we were allowed to eat, and we'd all kick the doors down at the local establishments and fill up on all of the Mexican food that we could. You name it. Enchilada. Fajita. Fried rice. Beans. Corn. Sweet tea. Spicy tamale. Green huts. Charlotte diamonds. The best food out there. It's been years since I've tasted that taste. So spicy and natural, as if plucked fresh from its natives lands. I had the fried rice with queso, and topped high with chicken, shrimp, and vegetables. Delicioso! I gobbled it up all in seven bites. Just like the seven slugfests I would slam in the good ol' days. Oh how I wish I could return to the 50's. The 1850's that is. I can't handle any more disappointment, my life's a mess let's control what I can. 2) Literally all of their menu is the same thing broken into 5 different sections. Same exact ingredients but just given different names. Slick. 3) I'm on my way back from Hershey and absolutely need to clear my entire stomach and start my journey for a defined and dripping hot 12 pack again. The bigger the meal the better, quicker and more fulfilling this process will be. Located in the former Tilted Kilt, the decor is only slightly different, but very clean. They kept the bar and the check-in stand. Took out several TVs, leaving only a few around the bar. High top tables are gone and several high back booths have taken their place; which is a plus. The staff is very attentive and pleasant. The menu offers several Mexican food items, mostly with a choice of chicken or beef. Shrimp or steak can be added for an extra cost. Fresh guacamole can be made at your table, if requested. We found the food to be made with very fresh ingredients and very tasty. I do wish they had drained the meat better, for my taco salad, as it had a soggy bottom. We found their prices quite affordable, especially for families. This place fills up quickly during dinner hours and on the weekends, with barely any parking spots left, so I suggest dining earlier.
