Customer service here is not much more than a friendly face (from my experience). I "checked in", like they were trying to be the Apple Store of shoes, and stated what brand and size shoes I currently wear but was more interested in making sure I was appropriately sized. Once I was assigned a salesperson they showed me what they were concerned with, a sale, and ignored my own concerns. They asked what I wear, how I felt with them, and pointed me to the same exact pair. Not once did they do any measurements to address my concerns. Whatever "customer service" you may have heard about this place no longer exists. They have a large number of sales people that aren't necessary since these days if they're not going to bother taking any sort of measurement. The prices are exactly the same as Amazon, so there is the added benefit of being able to try shoes on. But I would suggest checking for a better deal before purchasing here. TLDR: customer service falls short of what people have heard and therefore the store is nothing great. read more

This amazing shoe and athletic store is a must see in the East Lansing area. They not only offer running shoes and apparel but also have high end name brand casual shoes and boots. Additionally they have a wide selection of outdoor and running apparel too. Maybe even more importantly they ensure all the staff are highly educated. They can get the right kind of shoe for whatever your needs might be. Flat feet? No problem. High arches? No trouble. They will get you in the appropriate shoe or insole to make your feet feel fabulous. Outside of just selling shoes, they offer good form running classes to help your technique. In the case of some bad luck, they have sports med providers that assist in a clinic to see any injuries. I'm quite sure they are now offering physical therapy as well to get you back in the saddle from any injuries. This is more than a shoe store. Go check it out. You'll be amazed. read more

They will treat you great if you're spending $, not so good if you have an issue- proceed with caution. I bought a few pairs of shoes about 1.5 years ago. On one of the pairs, the shoe sole started coming unglued/apart. These are Brooks Ghost 10 DNA= $130. When I stopped in and expressed my concern on the lack of craftmanship and the issue of the sole coming unglued, I was told they are 'probably at the end of their lifespan'. What does that even mean? What is the lifespan based on? What is the criteria? She didn't even look at the shoe... there's very light wear and tear, no tears or wears... just unglued sole...BUT she was very eager to sell me another pair... like I would ever spend another dollar at Playmakers when they don't stand behind the products that I've already purchased from them. While I understand everything has a lifespan and nothing lasts for ever... I'm not an athlete, this is a lightly used pair of shoes, that costs $130; if they only last 1.5 years there's 2 issues to consider here: 1. either they are over priced. 2. the quality of the shoe is very poor (Brooks Ghost 10 DNA) Extremely dissapointed in Playmakers after-sale service and in the quality of the Brooks Ghost 10. I do have to give Brooks Ghost 10 some props thou- they are some of the most comfortable shoes you will ever wear. read more

Who knew buying running shoes could be this easy? I've been going here since high school, so this may seem somewhat biased, but I have never EVER been disappointed when buying shoes from here. I think what sets Playmakers apart from your average sports shoe store (Dick's, Finishline, Footlocker, etc...) is their customer service. The people they have working there are super knowledgable about their products, and have only one goal in mind- to get you into the right pair of shoes. They don't try and sell you the most expensive pair, or sell you extraneous accessories, they just want you to be happy with the shoes you buy. Case in point- I went to Dicks trying to find a decent memorial day sale. When I asked an associate about a shoe, he asked another associate who seemed less than interested. When I told him I needed something with support, he pointed out shoes he had heard were good, and were rated well by Runner's world. Nice that the shoes he picked out were the highest priced ones. Past that, he didn't seem to know very much about these shoes. Let's look at playmakers now. The first thing the associate asked me to do was walk a few steps so he could do a gate (gait?) analysis. After seeing me walk for a bit, he told me exactly what type of shoe I needed. He then asked what shoes I've used in the past, and based on that, made some recommendations. The shoes varied in price, and explained to me what the main difference was between each. After selecting a shoe, he had me run on a treadmill, to see how each felt, and in the end, actually ended up recommedning the cheaper shoe. Oh yeah, if you happen to be a highschooler, they give you a discount (provided the shoe isn't on sale) on the shoe you buy if you tell them you run track/x-country. First, their curbside service is marginal, at least from my experience. COVID over reaction is a problem nation wide. Second, their customer help is geared toward younger and more serious runners. After hearing rave reviews of the running store, I went through and tried it myself. First of all, it took me forever to get any salesperson's attention. Then they kind of acted like I was an inconvenience to me. All of the prices were ridiculously high, even the clearance racks. I finally went back during their big sale in January. The prices were then affordable. Not clearance rack prices, but I bought a couple pairs of shoes and running leggings. The lady that helped me that day was much better than the previous help I had experienced. I took a friend to be fitted for running shoes. He wanted socks as well, but all they offered were the Smart Wool socks, when he just wanted plain ol' Nike socks. Overall, I've been disappointed with Playmakers (I had a much better running store where I was previously located). I would only recommend going during their sales unless you want to pay through the roof for something. Selection isn't great either. I got a pair of shoes here today. The customer service was great. The dude watched me walk to get a sense of my gait. He picked out a pair of shoes and I tested them out by running on a treadmill. They captured video of me running and saw that one of my feed needed more support, so I switched to a different shoe. This corrected my collapsing arch, so I bought them. When I got home, I checked to see how much the shoes would have cost on Zappos.com. It was the same exact price. The staff is absolutely amazing: very knowledgeable, very friendly, and able to recommend the perfect shoe with your gait, terrain, and other preferences in mind. It's overwhelmingly clear that they know what they're doing. It's comforting to know that the people on staff are personally interested in running/sport because they know what it's like to actually use various shoes. I run a lot and have been running for over 20 years. Marathons, trails, 5Ks, whatever. This is the local place for buying shoes and goos. I don't mind spending $ to get good service when it comes to running shoes, and the salespeople here are all trained very well and they have all been great during the four years I've lived here and eight pairs of running shoes I've bought here. This place bugs me with its silly ponds and tanks and overpriced fancy yoga garb (suburbanite loungewear). There's a snooty "members only" vibe to the staff beyond the salespeople (who are awesome, let me say again). If Lansing had a Fleet Feet, I'd go there for shoes. If Running Fit was closer, I'd go there. But this place beats Dick's and Footlicker by miles and miles. It's really the only store for runners in town. read more

i am so happy with playmakers right now. i bought a pair of running shoes from them in february. i had worn the same brand of shoes for years which i was happy with but read reviews online that they had changed in the 2014 version so i wanted to try something new. i got fitted for shoes, tried on a few different pairs, ran on them all, and picked a pair with the help of the sales person based on her assessment of my feet and running style. she told me about their 30 day return or exchange policy, and sent me on my way. i ran on the shoes for a month and they were great. on what was seriously like exactly day 30, i started having problems. my left foot was going numb. this happened on 3 runs in a row. i tried loosening and relacing and nothing worked. i went back to the store with the shoes that had been purchased about 40 days before, so well past the 30 day window. plus they were gross and dirty from running in puddles and mud. the sales person did not even blink and just took me to try more shoes, took more measurements, did some running on the treadmill with videotaping, and found me a new pair. and he assured me that if that pair didn't work either i could come back again. so far so good, but i know if they don't work i won't even have to worry about it. awesome customer service. thank you playmakers! read more

Went to this store for the first time while visiting my parents'. If I were a local, I would most likely shop here regularly. This is the largest athletic shoe store I have been in. It appears to still be under construction. In addition to shoes, they have lots of apparel. I was here to look for hiking shoes. The selection was not large, but adequate. I didn't have time to check out the running shoe selection, but based on my observations of the staff (several very cute female employees when I was there) and the ambiance, this is a serious running shoe store. There is a display area with all kinds of information on local running events. There are several fish tanks scattered about the store and an elaborate pond and waterfall at the back of the store. They also have a dedicated kids section. If you are looking for shoes or athletic apparel or just want to see what has become of an old grocery store, definitely check out Playmakers. read more

Hands down the best athletic shoe store in the area, and it's not just me saying that, they have been featured in Runners World as one of the best athletic shoe stores in the Midwest. The staff is really friendly and don't push the most expensive item on you. Last time I went there they spent the time to have me get on the treadmill in 3 or 4 pairs of shoes so they could see the way the shoes affected my gait and from there recommended a shoe.
