I'm not sure how the name of the bar relates to anything, as I didn't see any playboys, or cappuccinos........nonetheless, this dive bar is quite the friendly neighborhood dive bar. It's 'Cheers' on another level. I met Sam Malone, Norm, Carla (or maybe Rebecca), and others. It's a very friendly establishment, both by the employees and customers. It truly is a hole in the wall (and has a few in the ladies room). I had no qualms however, about eating there. I wouldn't wear my Sunday best, but felt comfortable in my every day clothes. The reason I was there didn't disappoint me. The fried shrimp was just about perfect. They were huge, meaty, tender; the steak fries were hot, and neither item was very greasy. Really liked the friendliness of this place. Someone else mentioned it being in the 'hood', but since I'm from out of town, I have no idea if that truly qualifies or not. Co-worker asked me to go have a drink with her and eat some shrimp. Had heard of this place and it's famous shrimp so I thought why not! The place is in an urban area, but I grew up in an area somewhat similar so it did not bother me. Inside its not very big, but there are approx 15 tables that seat various number of people. This place was swingin when we got there. My friend gave me the rules: have someone secure a table, go up to the bar and order your food and a couple of drinks, then head back to your table. You will neednto entertain yourself with drinks, music, convo because it takes a while to get your food. And I mean awhile. I ordered a combo that came with 4 shrimp, 2 wings, and steak fries. Oh and tarter sauce. Ok now I am a shrimp and cocktail sauce type of gal..but most places like this only offer tarter sauce and I was bit bummed by that. Until....I tasted it. Let me tell you, you can not eat their shrimp with anything other than their tarter sauce. It was killer!! I see why others ordered extra! The wings were crispy and hot, but too big. Im not a fan of baby turkey wings that places try to pass off as chicken wings! I mean thats how big these were!! All in all I enjoyed my food and will definitely come back. Ive been to plenty holes in the walls, because they normally have really good cheap food. This place is not an exception. The Shrimp is always good but on this visit I couldnt get past the state of the establishment. You can be a hole in the wall n still keep it clean. As I sat there waiting on my food I was #71 and they were on 48ish? I started noticing how dirty it was. I went to the restroom and the state of the bathroom was VERY concerning to say the least. There was a man in a suit behind the bar and in & out of the kitchen (quite comfy) when I went to ask was he the owner or management he was quite rude. Like idk talk to 1 of them. The ppl he was just rubbing elbows with behind the bar?!? By that time the point was mute, I requested for a refund and went to another resturant with jumbo shrimp seasoned & cooked perfectly and I had no problems using there bathroom, speaking with management and knowing that they have an A rating ( Drakes Place n No they r not a hole in the wall). I have been here several times , but I have never had a bad experience like today. My daughter never been here so I brought her and her male bestie to experience great food and atmosphere. I asked my hubby to join, as he works down further near the bridge. So we ordered food and I spoke to the owner like I always had. We ordered the shrimp and tripe and I asked the hubby to order our drinks while we waited. Mind you, this is my daughter and her friends 1st time here and they really was liking it until we heard commotion from the bar. I went up there and the owner is going off on my husband saying stuff like "they be coming up in here trying to take my m...fking business. What the f*** you asking what my name is. That's none of your m..fking business!". Then she got smart to him and said "don't be talking to me, you should be talking to the one fixing your drink!". I asked him what's going on, and he shrugged his shoulders saying he didn't know and that he just ordered drinks. The bartender looked at me as to say "nevermind her". Well she kept going on saying stuff and getting smart to the point that my daughter got up to come ask what was the problem. By now we are all upset! I told my daughter to chill as well as told the owner it didn't even have to be that way. Then she started getting smart with me!! I'm looking at her but letting her have her say because it was obvious she wasnt well and at this point I wasn't hungry anymore. It upset me because we didn't know where the unprofessional behavior popped up at and no matter how you feel about it, I just shelled out over $70 in food and drinks and this is how the owner thanks her patrons? My daughter and friend was so upset and didn't want the food. Hubby said he wasn't tripping because he could tell she may have been a bit tipsy. Once I told her he was with me and wasnt trying to steal her business, she asked me how I know him, which I said he was my husband. Then she apologized to him. This is such a late review....We briefly stopped by this location Saturday, October 29, 2016 around 8pm'ish. We are both from Saint Louis and I was so shocked that the Mister had never been here. Well of course its a very small location with scary on-street parking. Well the Mister is claustrophobic so our stay was short lived when we entered-he immediately wanted our food to go. He was very uncomfortable but of course he ran into someone he knew so that helped a bit. Now, when we received the food it looked scrumptious as usual. We ordered 12 Jumbo Shrimp w/ Fries for $24.50 (enough for two). He was impressed which is kind of hard to do with him. Playboys is no dance club not in the best neighborhood but they sell the best chicken, shrimp tripe, jacks and hamburgers in St.Louis.
