My family eats a lot of Mexican food. So let me start out by saying the food was fine. Was it amazing? Nope? Was it average or a little above that? Yes. Salsa and chips were just as expected. Service wise we had to wait a few minutes to be seated and a few more minutes for drinks to come. They appeared to be understaffed and had several larger parties they were finishing up with when we came in. Wait staff was friendly. The decor was something straight out of a family restaurant from the 80s with the dark wood paneling. It felt tired. It was not the usual Hispanic vibe but the food was fine. Options along I-80 are few and far between so this fit the bill for a non fast food option on a long road trip. We felt that the prices were high for the 80s dining experience and average tasting Mexican food. read more

We've been patronizing Playa Cancun since they were in their old location. We enjoy their food and service at a great price. Things lately, however, have changed and not for the better. We were present when the issue between parties and reservations was noted below. It was not handled well by the restaurant at all. When we arrived shortly after 6, the other party was there and waiting to be seated (we asked because we didn't want to cut in front of them). When we asked, one member of the party said their reservation was for 6, and she said they were told by several restaurant staff that there was another group seated at their table they had reserved and had been there since 4pm, and wasn't getting up, and she was frustrated, which is understandable. We sat, ordered, and were served while they were still waiting. At around 6:40, a member of the party did go over, as she was continually being told by staff that the other party was refusing to get up (I was in earshot of it all), and she did point at them (not threateningly, IMO - she had a plate of baked goods in her hand), and I was unable to hear the conversation as there was a wall between us, but she came back out looking irritated, and went back to waiting. Honestly, I would have left long before that, but it was the local university's grad weekend, and there may not have been anywhere else to go. Two people from the other party got up from the table, followed the woman out - one with a cell phone recording - and a somewhat heated discussion followed. The two returned to their table. We saw a server go in, but she appeared in a light mood, and again, we couldn't hear what they were saying. Another few minutes went by, and the one party left, and the servers scrambled to prepare the table for the other party. In my opinion, it was handled poorly all the way around. When people asked what happened, servers were saying that the other party refused to leave, they had been there since 4, and they were notified that there was another party and they didn't care, but other servers were faulting the large party waiting. I'm fairly confident that the seated party was told the other party was complaining, and apparently told them the other party was reserved for 6:30, when the other party said 6, and some of the servers did as well. The waiting party was told the seated party was well over their reservation time and was not leaving. Way to stir the pot. Aside from that, the place is looking worse for wear. The furniture is largely old and broken. We've been seated right next to a fireplace with "HOT" written on it - we asked to move. And the ladies room is just....ew. It's old and dirty, and there are 2 spots to use, but there are no stalls - just a small half door that doesn't cover any one person. So if you're using the facilities and someone comes in, be prepared to have an audience. I try to avoid it at all costs. Due to these issues, we are taking a break from Playa until they hopefully address issues. read more

We ordered our food and we were never checked on once. After sitting for 45 minutes without service, I had to get up and request our check and boxes. I had hard beef tacos (beef was so flavorful and cojita cheese beautifully sprinkled on top). My mom had a taco salad made with a shell bowl (said this was amazing). My dad had the beef enchiladas (mentioned that the sauce over top was sweeter than normal, but he still thought they were good). For drinks, I tried the frozen pina colada margarita (amazing, highly recommend) and frozen strawberry margarita (not as flavorful, but was decent). Weird place. Walked in on a Sunday and there were a few tables with customers. It was dead silent. No music or TVs. They sat our family of 5 in the windowless back room right across from a private party baby shower. There were 2 dozen other places they could have sat us. I'm sure the ladies at the shower felt just as awkward. We asked to move tables. Service was slow and pretty inattentive. Took awhile for drinks and the place was not busy. Drinks were very very WEAK. Grocery store mixers with little alcohol. The free chips were stale and the salsa... if you want to call it that... was flavorless red water. The guacamole was terrible. We barely touched it. Not fresh. Clearly from a squeeze pack or otherwise store bought. Not fresh made. Our girls did like the steak, hence the 2 stars, but the rest of the food was not worth the $ or calories. I literally would've rather gone to taco bell. Playa Cancun moved here from its old location along Route 11 several years ago. This building previously housed Ridgway's and Three Willows Restaurant. Location is easy accessible off of central road with plenty of parking. My primary experience with Playa Cancun is with takeout orders. Pickup is easy enough, either in the restaurant portion or at the bar. The interior portion is nice, very wood grain decor, with a fair amount of seating. There is a patio for outside dining. Takeout orders come with a good amount of food. I go with the Cheesesteak Quesadilla that comes with Mexican rice, refried beans, various vegetables/sour cream/guacamole, chips, and salsa. I've never after a meal from here left hungry, and for some this could easily be two meals. Overall worth the stop for a good, hardier meal. read more

The waitress was very nice which is why I rates more than 1 star. We waited a few minutes at front because no one was there to seat us. The food was atrocious. I got carne asada and The portion of rice was about two spoon fulls not serving spoons just normal spoons, the meat was a thin slab burned, dry, tasteless, and overcooked. This place is a trash heap based solely on the fact that that couldn't give less of a crap about any food sensitivities you have. The food is hardly decent Americanized Mexican food so honestly I have no reason to EVER go back. I have ordered shrimp tacos and fajitas on two separate occasions saying specifically "please just be careful with cross contamination with other meats" and had found a piece of chicken inside my taco and a chunk of steak in my fajitas. These are not hypothetical situations. It is so outrageously stupid it almost seems comical. How could you be SO blissfully unaware that you not only mess not cleaning off the grill (which you should be between every mother lovin' order) but you make it ridiculously obvious by loading up the tacos with a piece of meat inside them. It almost seems intentional. That is how stupid it is. It is so outrageously stupid that it seems like you would have to be doing it on purpose to make that mistake. Really nice. read more

After looking at the good reviews on this place, we decided to stop in and try it for ourselves. The place definitely needs an upgrade in its decor. And it would have been nice to see real Mexican hats on the wall, instead of paper hats. Dying plants lined the division between our booth and the ones across the shoulder high divider. My side of the bench was ripped half way across it and felt like it had lost a good bit of padding. Having said all of that, The chips and salsa were very good. Chips were light and crunchy and salsa had just a bit of heat to it. Not too much though. Our meals came out quickly and both were very good. So, don't let the decor keep you from stopping in for a decent Mexican meal. read more

Food and drinks were great as usual. Tonight at Playa Cancun our table of 10 had a patron come over to us to let us know she had this specific table reserved for 6:30pm. It was 6:20pm. She rudely poked at the table with her finger when she was telling us and then walked away. I caught up to her and asked her if she had brought this up with the restaurant staff. She said she did but wanted us to know too. Felt that we should know how rude it was for us to be there as long as we were. At that point we had been there one hour 20 minutes and we were just finishing our dessert. I found this to be extremely inappropriate and rude. I spoke to our waitress but did not ask to speak to management. Our waitress said they will not ask people to leave from a table. I'm not sure if the restaurant should tell patrons that we can sit you here but there is a party reserved for this table in an hour or so. We left our table at 6:41. So, I guess they waited 11 minutes. On the way out someone in her party stated that "some people these days" insert eye roll. read more

I really can't understand the bad reviews. Sometimes they are busy, yes, and you have to wait a little for service but the food is never disappointing and is so reasonably priced. One of my favorite places to go when I'm in the area. One bad experience doesn't prevent me from going back to a restaurant, but I must say I have not had a bad experience here. Tonight the service was slow and disorganized. We watched another table who came in 15 mins after us get served first. Our order was an easy order and basic. Our daughter got the kids chicken nuggets. They were so old and freezer burnt, we couldn't cut them with a knife. All of us agreed that our food was bland and tasteless. Have been coming here for years. Unfortunately the last two visits were subpar. They have a gray menu with a lot of variety and options. We are always seated right away and the chips and salsa come out. Salsa and chips are good. However last time we were there the food was super salty. Not sure if they got a new cook but it was salty to the point I could finish it. We will go back again but if the over saltiness isn't done we may not return. It's a shame because it's one of the only restaurants we go to when in Bloomsburg. read more
