We're in MIAMI, BEACH! A couple of Chicagoans land in not-so-sunny Miami Beach for a weekend where the sand is flooded with monsoon rain. Starving, we look up on Yelp to find a cafe that was not completely submerged in water and had some Cuban flavors for us to enjoy. Luckily, this cafe was not playing us when it came down to cheap and delicious Latin cuisine! Playa Cafe was a fab first stopover in Miami. Inside, you could tell there were locals and tourists alike, with Spanish being the definite lingua franca of the restaurant. Every item on the menu had a photo so your eyes can do all the deciding. Simply put: place your order, pay (and note that gratuity is NOT already included), and then wait for the food to arrive. I ordered myself a $9 plate of fried pork chops with beans and plantains. The pork chops were nicely done with a smokey flavor left behind, and the plantains were what you'd expect anywhere on the island. The real winner here were the beans! Rather than simply being little lumps to munch on, the beans here were flavored with meat, mushrooms, and other veggies that made it nearly a stew! Highly recommend. So while Playa is small, it packs a punch. Definitely an authentic experience that is open late for any curious palette. I will return one day! read more

Amazing Cuban food. Loved the colada (a sweet Cuban coffee) and their pina colada smoothie. The plantains was so good! The ladies that worked in there were very nice and welcoming. (Baltimore Yelp Elite takes on MIAMI!) Ok, this is going to sound dramatic, but really Yelp, this place was everything I could have ever wanted/needed in my first Miami trip. (My boyfriend and I visited this place twice during our 4-day trip, it was that good!) From the staff, to the food, to my other fellow customers, this spot definitely deserves 5-stars. When you first walk in, it's a little small and almost everything is in Spanish, so you may be overwhelmed; but don't be discouraged! (I unfortunately don't speak fluent Spanish at this time, but I can't wait to learn!) The woman working the front helped me breeze through the menu and even taught me some Spanish along the way. I had the chicken fajitas the first night we visited. The next morning I had a mango smoothie, the American cubano breakfast, and a colada. Everything was bomb! Playa Cafe is a casual place with the seating set up in diner style. They offer over fifty different dishes. I had the chicharrones with yuca. It was a very good dish. I was afraid that the yuca would be too tough like plantains or something, but I needn't have feared because it was soft, similar to the consistency of a roasted potato. I also tried a Nicaraguan soda that I was unfamiliar with called Milca. It tasted like a bubble gum cream soda. It was too sweet for me. read more

Legit Cuban!! So tasty! SO good! So messy! SO cheap!! And so not fancy!! Leave everything at the door. You come here for food!! It's open 22 hours a day! Yes, 22! 6 am to 4 am daily! I'm guessing they go shopping for that 2 hours? :D This place is a hot mess and 3 halves at night. Drunken people sliding down as early as 9 pm! Woooo! Come in, grab a seat! No one will seat you! I repeat: not a single person! The order taking however is done orderly :D Food is cook right in front of you! Espressos included! Only speak Spanish! So be patient! The good: the food! I had Cuban breakfast here day and night: especially post night out, its so good! That rice is so tasty! Simple with eggs! Meat! And super cheap yet delicious colada or cortado aka Cuban espressos! The meat plates and the Cuban sammiches are huge!!! Comes rice, beans, plantains and then some! Can't go wrong! Not a décor watching place but you come here and you eat! You eat good!! Ordered palomilla steak via Ubereats. The steak was literally a sliver of meat, something you see on a steak sandwich...maybe even less. I couldn't believe it. On top of that, they gave me so much rice, the steak seemed more like a side dish. I was wondering why it was only $9 for a palominos steak, and now I know. Typical latin food, Lot of varieties and plates, from baleadas to chicken chicharrones... you can find it all. Prices are great, and lots of food. Don't expect to eat together if you go with a friend or group, since they bring out the food as it comes out, one at a time. To me it's okay, I'm sure other people might be bothered by it. Super casual place, other customers pass you the plate, since I was sat away from the main counter. I'm happy and portions are awesome read more

Hole in the wall known for their cuvan sandwiches. Lots of locals here. The staff knows minimal English but the whole menu is in picture form. The Cuban is huge. Thick cuts of ham and hefty amounts of shredded pork. It was a bit too meaty and greasy for my liking. People really like it though! I think it just wasn't for me. I have one regret. I wish I found this place sooner. Great food. Great price. Friendly staff. I've been waiting for my Cuban bread at all the $$$ Cuban restaurants and it never came with the meal, but here it was included! Breakfast special is plenty for 2 people. Coffee is on another level. Cheap eats! Found this place to be one of the cheapest in the South Beach area. Each plate with the exception of a few seafood options was $10 or less. The portions are large enough to get you full. I ordered a fish filet plate which included rice (choice of white or yellow - go with yellow), black beans, and side salad. The fish was lightly battered and crispy. Tastes great with the Chili Willy hot sauce they have. The place is pretty small. The countertops may have about 16 seats total, and a few seats by the door. It can get congested. Our total bill for two plates was under $25, including tip. I'd go back. read more

Food was exactly mediocre. I had the palomilla steak and it was pretty average. It wasn't great, it wasn't terrible. Overpriced for what it was. Food is a 3/5 but the service drags it down pretty far. Very slow and staff don't take people seriously. Many other disappointed customers waiting for their meals and missing items in orders. I might as well have told them that I'd hop over the counter and make my own meal. An hour for a poorly cooked steak??? read more

If you are looking for a non touristy place, this is it. I was the only non Spanish speaking diner. It has no tables in it, just a long bar on each side of the narrow room. The building is stuffed full of food supplies which I assume are for use by their kitchen and for sale. Hostess was very nice. I wouldn't classify the food as excellent but it was good with a good price. I had a palamia steak with onions and black beans, white rice and plantains. I finished it off with a tres leche cake which I thoroughly enjoyed. If I wanted something quick and convenient, I would visit again. read more

Little Gem as I like to say, this place is. Not the best food, but above average and a great spot for breakfast. Coffee is delicious, all food we got was very good with only exception being the bread used in Cuban Toast, kind of bland. Had traditional Cuban breakfast, various sides, and egg sandwiches on a few occasions during our stay. Place is also ridiculously inexpensive, so enjoy! read more

Oh my word this place!! First off. The cuban coffee is divine. The ladies working were very nice and they make you feel welcome. Gloria was very sweet. I had the cuban sandwich with fries and an Inca cola for 9 bucks. They have canned beverages no fountain and also have beer. I had never had a cuban sandwich before but im sure this was top notch. I could not get enough of the flavor. If u enjoy spice ask for the picante sauce they have. Its finely diced pickled peppers with herbs giving i just the right amount of heat and acid. My wife who is vegan had the tostones. Smashed fried plantains. She ate every bite. The vibe is super mellow and your bound to run into a regular who has other great places to visit in Miami Beach. We have come to this restaurant 7 years now. Our children have been coming here since 7 months old; the waitress recognizes our children and know what our children like to eat. It's very surprising and warm to know a small local business does this. I love to come here when we have a meeting at Lowe's Hotel. my kids' favorites are fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh Cuban toast, fried sweet plantains, and the best for me is Cuban coffee. The best part about this is the price is very reasonable. Of course it's not the best location and spacious, but for a tourist like us; having a home cook meal that's quick, easy, and affordable is all we need. read more

This was delicious! It's not the best place to eat in, nowhere near fine dining, haha! but it was worth it! It was tiny and packed in there because it's only got a counter for patrons to eat on and just a few side seats around it. The shrimp creole sauce dish was very tasty. Even the rice was good. The chicken with rice was different from what I'm used to. It had some vegetables mixed in and it was creamier than the arrow con pollo in used to but it was delicious and very cheap! You can tell it's great because for one, it was full and two it had many returning locals. I would return in a heartbeat! Recommend! read more

Arrived at our hotel too early so we stopped here to grab a bite to eat, recommendation from hotel front desk. It's a hole in the wall joint, small and doesn't look to appealing inside. This place is amazing and perfect if you're looking for quick and excellent service, authentic Cuban food, and super affordable. I came here with my friend before heading to the airport. We each ordered a Cuban sandwich (huge and delicious) Cuban sandwiches have mustard and pickles in them. We also ordered stuffed chicken sweet plantains (very good and great for sharing). The beef empanadas are super good here too, definitely give those a try while you're here. Oh and be sure to order a Cuban coffee too! Horrible service. We were served by Blanca and ordered a Cuban sandwich. After waiting 20: minutes my friend went to ask if the sandwhich was coming and they just started making it. Blanca admitted that she had forgotten and did not want to offer anything to compensate for osing 20 minutes of our time. Any other establishment would have comped the sandwhich because of customer service. This has been my worst sevice experience in a restaurant Horrible servicio. We got the pollo, the carne and a guava pastelito. They were so so good that we ended up getting 2 more carne empanadas and the guava pastelito was quite literally the best one i've ever had. The service was good and the vibes were so cute because it was right by the beach and there were cute tables outside with some spanish music playing. So cute.

Everything was excellent and teaming with nuances of flavors. The only gripe is the chicken was a bit dry but still good. As the evening progressed, live singing and music commenced. They were a talented pair singing song requests. The ambience and stage here make this place fun and also perfect for a date. Our server and staff was also very friendly, upbeat and solicitous. There's an intense dynamic of action throughout this joint- upstairs and downstairs. There's professional performers on the center bar top. Walk to the back and there's another live performance complete with more dancers and singing with a dance floor at the stage. What's upstairs? There is DJ dancing - popular high energy music. The drinks are definitely expensive, but that is to be expected in South Beach. The only complaint is the bartenders I visited on the bottom floor to the left bar in the back and upstairs in the DJ room looked like they did not want to be there. Perhaps, this place is too wild for a continuous eight hour shift? Who knows. The jovial atmosphere in this place makes you forget quickly though. I think I stayed here until 2am dancing my ass off. I had a colorful evening and would definitely return! - maybe the dinner and show experience?

I did a search on Yelp and came across Mehzcla which had a number of high rated reviews. I always read the bad reviews to see what people are complaining about but do so with a grain of salt. The complaints were regarding service and price, which I will address. Mehzcla is the hotel restaurant for the Lord Balfour and consists of patio seating and seats in the lobby and lobby bar. The night we went, there was bartender/server and another server handling the restaurant. It wasn't terribly busy and looked like a number of people were just having drinks on the patio where we sat which provided great people watching on Ocean Drive. They have a happy hour with $10 mixed drinks, appetizers, and meals that runs until 8 pm. The restaurant is billed as Latin but I'd say it was more of pub fare with maybe a Latin flare. The two servers rotated taking care of us and were polite, friendly, but hard to find from time to time. We ordered mixed drinks which could have used more alcohol but were tasty. I had a mescal margherita with a spiced rim (which I had to request and describe). Had the hot fried chicken sandwich and had no complaints about the chicken. The sandwich came with fries which were pretty good. Only complaint is that I like to have my fries spiced up, which most restaurants can accommodate. I asked the server for my fries to be spiced and gave several options on how to do it. Fries came out plain with no explanation why my request was not accommodated. Had the churros for dessert. Three large churros covered in cinnamon sugar with chocolate and Carmel dipping sauce. The churros were good except one was a little over cooked. It was an ok experience for something quick and not having to spend a ton of money. Still much better options in SoBe.
