Mikey was a talented athlete. One day he came home complaining about blurry vision. It turned out that he had a tumor on his brain stem. He passed away at the age of only 19 from a rare form o brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Giloma. After his death his family wanted to give back to the community that supported them through Mikey's illness. They have undertaken several events to fun a cure. These include a 5K and and the Mikey Strong Golf Tournament. After the old playground was taken out, the new playground was installed. It was designed to be larger and ADA compliant and inclusive. Mikey loved the outdoors and always liked to include everyone. The playground is reflective of his generous spirit. To make the playground wheelchair accessible, synthetic turf was used on the ground. Other special features of the playground include communication birds for non-verbal kids and two levels of monkey bars, one at standard height and one lower. The playground equipment was chosen to encourage parallel play where kids of different abilities can play alongside each other. Funding for the playground was raised by volunteers who solicited donations. As someone who works with children with special needs I love the idea of this play space and how it honors a special teen who meant so much to this community.

The crew had to do some extra work to move around existing plants, etc and when they left you would have never known anything was shuffled around. A very nice park well kept where, if you are lucky, you can view some manatees…read more Manatee Sanctuary Park in Cape Canaveral, Florida, is a well-maintained park in the area for all to enjoy. It is located right along the Banana River between Port Canaveral and Ron Jon's. The entire property is well-kept and manicured. It features a nice paved walking and jogging path for a workout or a peaceful stroll. Between the walking path and the river there is a covered walkway with pavilions that stretch along the water's edge. While manatee sightings can be hit or miss, the general peace and the chance to spot other creatures like dolphins and wading birds make a trip to this location worthwhile. Right off the parking lot, a fun detail that adds character to the park is the very nice statue of turtles. Taller than an average person. The park provides a good size parking lot that can comfortably fit about 25 cars, which is a huge plus, ensuring easy access even during slightly busier times. While the park does have bathrooms, they were unfortunately not the cleanest on the day of my visit. OVerall, Manatee Sanctuary Park is a nice place for visitors looking for beautiful scenery, and excellent paths for exercise. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a quiet, relaxing outdoor escape.
